All true but I was more looking at the design. A smaller version but it could be done and not as expensive as some are suggesting.

Screw it lets hit up Bill Gates and Build us the NZ National Stadium of pure awesomeness and entertainment. 50 thousand seat rectangular stadium with a roof. Home of NZRU, NZF, CF, Phoenix, WRU.

Could give it a scary name like "The Gates Of Hell"

Why Bill Gates?  We have our own Wairarapa local (well, almost) gazillionaire in James Cameron.

Just the potential film rights to the depths of the abyss that was SunCorp Stadium last Sunday is bound to get him interested!

Ahem. Somewhat pedantic I know, but Dunedin would raise a tentative hand to question that statement.

Mostly irrelevant to the current conversation, but the covered roof has made going to sport in this city such a different experience. Whether or not it's affordable is a different question.

yeah and you get Rod Stewart too

Bonus!

Anyway, despite the fact that not many people use the stadium than desirable, it's definitely more appealing to consider planning a trip to it on a damp friday night compared to Carisbrook. The rook takes away much of the 'walk up on the day' factor.

James Cameron could do a movie - Raise the Phoenix instead of Raise the Titanic.

Is there an opportunity to dig down and lower the playing surface so that you can then add seating around the outside to make it rectangular for when you need it. If you could lower the playing surface 5m (for example).....

Below sea level? Could be expensive, although ASB Sports Centre basement car park was built below sea level. Check out "Wellington reclamation animation" by Lanma726 which shows the extent of land reclamation since 1840. It would seem that the land on which Westpac Stadium now sits was reclaimed by Wellington Harbour between 1906 and 1927 for railway. Technically it could be done and certainly not completely out of left field (scuse the pun).

Hi all,

A good friend of the Fever is looking for some help. He wants people's opinion on the following questions to help him with some work he is doing on stadiums. looking for just opinions rather than any debate and why someone's opinion is wrong.

Thanks team

What ground do you prefer for home games, Westpac Stadium or Hutt Rec?

Did you enjoy the Hutt Rec experience? If so, why?

Would you like to see more games scheduled at Hutt Rec?

Was transport and access an issue at Hutt Rec?

Should Wellington have its own dedicated boutique football only venue?

Do you prefer a stadium in the city or the suburbs?

If Wellington Phoenix was to have its own venue where would be the most appropriate place to locate it?

Hutt Rec was much better

Did you enjoy the Hutt Rec experience? If so, why?

Yes, closer to the players, better range of food

Would you like to see more games scheduled at Hutt Rec?

Maybe

Was transport and access an issue at Hutt Rec?

Transport was major issue living North of Wellington meant two trains to get there (Or take a car)

Should Wellington have its own dedicated boutique football only venue?

Definitely should have a boutique rectangular stadium, whether football only or not is up for debate

Do you prefer a stadium in the city or the suburbs?

In the City, is easy for access.

If Wellington Phoenix was to have its own venue where would be the most appropriate place to locate it?

Close to Wellington Train Station, as this is the hub of all transport in the region.

Hutt Rec

Did you enjoy the Hutt Rec experience? If so, why?
Yes, better atmosphere, closer to the players, less yellow seats. Less so when it was raining though.

Would you like to see more games scheduled at Hutt Rec?
Maybe. Definitely if it was a more permanent option with some cover, more toilet blocks, better walkways etc. In present configuration it's still a good option for 2-3 games per year in the summer.

Was transport and access an issue at Hutt Rec?
Not for me, but I live in Upper Hutt.

Should Wellington have its own dedicated boutique football only venue?
Absolutely, but doesn't have to be just football. Happy to share with league, club rugby, even Lions etc.

Do you prefer a stadium in the city or the suburbs?
Doesn't bother me because I'm in the suburbs, but strategically I think it would be better for the Nix for it to be in the city.

If Wellington Phoenix was to have its own venue where would be the most appropriate place to locate it?
Present stadium is perfect location, it's just the stadium that is wrong.

Both fair edits, and I'd even agree with them for my own as well. If there was a transport option through Petone - Grenada (Bus?) then it'd be sweet from North as well :)

Point on Transport, getting there was fine but Parking was a bit of an issue for people coming from out of town due to no Parking Structure. Otherwise agree wholeheartedly on all of this

Parking was all good - we drove twice and only took the train once. Had no issues finding a park. Worst case scenario we had to walk 5mins, but it was free of course.

What ground do you prefer for home games, Westpac Stadium or Hutt Rec?

Personally, Hutt Rec because I live close by - though from a Wellington perspective, Westpac is ideal.

Did you enjoy the Hutt Rec experience? If so, why?

Yes... atmosphere, accessibility of the match, food & bevvy options and value, portaloos, close to home.

Would you like to see more games scheduled at Hutt Rec?

Personally, sure (refer above)

Was transport and access an issue at Hutt Rec?

Personally, no (refer above).

Should Wellington have its own dedicated boutique football only venue?

Soccer football? No (unsustainable)... any football? Hell yes!

Do you prefer a stadium in the city or the suburbs?

City is more suitable/accessible for many more people.

If Wellington Phoenix was to have its own venue where would be the most appropriate place to locate it?

Log City (aka: across the road from Westpac).

So, in summation - the Brendan Foot Kia Hutt Rec experience at Westpac's location. Good luck.

This is my own opinion, I know some won't agree with it but I really loved the Hutt Rec experience. Even if it did mean getting soaked at the last game.

What ground do you prefer for home games, Westpac Stadium or Hutt Rec?

Hutt Rec.

Did you enjoy the Hutt Rec experience? If so, why?

Yes, The closer to the pitch, closer to parking, closer to a pub that supplied decent food. Easier to get in and out of.

Would you like to see more games scheduled at Hutt Rec?

Every game and if not, the games that were being sent around the country. It was a great experience.

Was transport and access an issue at Hutt Rec?

It was brilliant, no issues at all.

Should Wellington have its own dedicated boutique football only venue?

Yes - Hutt Rec! Otherwise a smaller stadium that is beside Westpac in the rail yards.

Do you prefer a stadium in the city or the suburbs?

In the city, whether it be in Wellington or Lower Hutt city.

If Wellington Phoenix was to have its own venue where would be the most appropriate place to locate it?

Hutt Rec or near Wellington Railway station.

I think the fact that the Huttrec didn't cell out despite the team flying high and all the unique aspects of it shows that the location is not suitable or sustainable for the club. Just too far for walk up / apathetic fans.

I don't know if that is the point. Did they get as many as they usually get at Westpac? did they make more money by playing there than at Westpac? did the spectators enjoy it more there than at Westpac?

I think Ryan's point is that if a novelty gets a couple hundred extra tickets sold then it probably wouldn't work on a permanent basis. A boutique stadium would be great but location is crucial.
