Thanks to all the Yellow Fever who came down to the first game with the new stand. What an atmosphere and it was all down to you guys. I have been to hundreds of rugby games there (cos thats all we get) and now I wished we could have that at every home game. You guys rock!

I hope this becomes an annual event!

The Phoenix, like the Warriors will become a New Zealand entity. Christchurch has always been a football city and we proved it last night. But as I said, the Yellow Fever made it special.

not likely scouse!!! Terry has always maintained that we are the WELLINGTON Phoenix not NZ or anything else, unlike the warriors and brerakers.....if ChCH want their own pro team then someone else can stump up with the cash!

Got a point there on it being Terrys Wellington team. But as I posted on a LFC site last night it was fantastic to watch a decent team live. I suspect the money men in CHCH are waiting for the NZFRU to let Super rugby go private. And the Aussie's wouldn't want a second team in the A League?

I HATE clubs being called NZ, keep it wellington forever as its a wellington based club. If you change it to NZ it will just have to be changed back when future nz clubs enter(and they will).
I hate all this changing the name to "make more money and increase market" crap .
If in 15 years we have the central phoenix, southern one eyed mako's, northern cocks( ha ha im an aucklander) I will fudging die!

If it does you have to promise not to wear your red shirt because Robbie plays (or sits in the stands) in the A-League.

If it makes the cantabs wear Yellow and Black I'd be somewhat placated.

Awesome crowd there in CHC, I've just got back from watching Leeds at Elland Road but the atmosphere at AMI Stadium seemed better then the beautiful, but hellish cold day up there in Leeds.

19k awesome stuff.  One question though, is that crowd size a one offa or can professional NZ teams expect more crowds like that from down there?

One off.

Christchurch is a similar market to Wellington and will get similar crowds to Wellington.

I think from the crowd, about 10k showed up as it was openning night at the "new" stadium, the rest were there for the football. All coming from various parts of the South island and heaps from up this way. Saw a lot of familiar faces. Photos to come.

now, if given the choice of a game next season being played down there or back up at the Ring of Dirt, CHCH will win hands down with me. No Chicken Wire to block my view! I do have some opinions but as this particular thread is a positive one, I'll save them for another. But I should say it was good to see such a large and enthusiastic crowd turn out for a Football match crowning the openning of a Rugby Fortress.

Don't agree with the 10k for opening nite. We in CHCH are starved of decent entertainment. Rugby has become boring. So that crowd was there to see decent family entertainment. And it wasn't expensive. I had 3 boys with me last nite and they loved it. Smiles on there face's. Where's our Mr money bags?? scousek1w12010-01-31 14:16:55

CHCH need to get their act together and a sponsor and go for it then. Plenty of wealthy businessmen down there too. It could happen if they put their mind to it. Get enough teams in the A League and they could kill the 3 game thing and have just home and away matches. Wellington saw a dream and then Terry came on board and the rest is history as they say.

Totally agree with you. CHCH Football clubs need to unite and start something!

Rubbish @ the call of 10k for the new stand...

A good 20 000 or so have been around the stand since the opening day so i disagree. Everyone was there for a good time and the football

ive got a song that wont take long, Adelaide are rubbish.. the second verse is same as the first.. ADELAIDE ARE RUBBISH

Back home in Wellington, fantastic enjoyable weekend for the wife and I in Christchurch.
The crowd turnout was fantastic,a "perfect storm" opportunity for Terry and WP.

Firstly great weather,
then new stand opening at AMI Stadium ChCh,
plus a Football supporting public starved of top level games,
and also perhaps a mixture of a rugby weary segment of supporters looking for a bit of variety,
plus keen sports fans keen to get their taste of what some of their Wellington compatriots might be taking for granted (!!??)

I'd say on the strength of the turnout and subsequent financial return into the WP coffers a repeat visit during next season is a definite.

As has been said before in this thread and others, its not easy for every season pass holder to travel away to Christchurch. To make it be better and more accessible to more season pass holders perhaps chartered cheap flight(s) (if numbers permitted) ??
Quantas as sponsor of A league might assist.

Have just said on another thread, i don't the new stand had any impact on the crowd (or very little at best), the rugby season starts in 2 weeks, surely rugby fans keen to see the new stand could have waited that long.

It was a nice night, there is a strong football fraternity down here, and they tend to get out and support, i noticed a lot ore kids there last night than i have seen at the ROF. Heaps of dads and mums with their kids...

yea but then throw the fact there hasnt been a game in chch for a long long time in and the novelty factor is very high. resulting in a big crowd. beckham game being good example...soldout rof, then auckland tried it again 2 soon and the crowd was smaller. not saying it exactly same scenario, just highlighting that a novelty factor can influence a crowd number

WE stumped up with 19 thousand fans.

I think we deserve another match next year.

Fingers crossed.

Well done. It was a one off though and plenty of traveling fans boosted the number. Don't get me wrong I'm stoked CHCH got behind the game but it is the WELLINGTON Phoenix and I would hate for us to become some sort of traveling circus. One game down south is good but anymore I'm against. Especially considering the fortress of fire we have going on it doesn't make sense to lose that advantage.

i think we should not go back to CHCH. You know, always best to go out on a high. It would be  if we went back next year and only 10k or less showed up.

I'd be cool with one home game a season played in Christchurch.  I daresay it would appeal to Terry getting a decent crowd and a bit of money for once*.

Plus, Phoenix have never lost a game at AMI Stadium.  We have a 100% record so all this fortress stuff about the ROF surely works in favour more for AMI (for this to work please ignore number of games played at AMI).

*Not having a go at you chaps who are at the Phoenix games week in week out.  More the casuals/euro-snobs who won't bother half the time.

Lets not, not unless they are going to substantially subsidize the travel of those in Wellington.

I cant wait for a 2nd kiwi a-league team... imagine the rivalry..

we could travel down to christchurch twice a year and see a full crowd watching New zealanders play other kiwis for a change...

It will be like the All whites qualifier.. a full crowd supporting their own teams.. Sorta like the north island v the south island.. :)

At the least you'd think ChCh has shot to the top of WPX's alternative venue list.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Surely they've earned a match a season. Even if the crowd is a bit smaller next year it is extra cash in the coffers for Terry, if Wellington wants absolutely every game then get to the 10k break even point...

Should however always be the Wellington Phoenix, fingers crossed that a Christchurch franchise can eventuate sometime, meaning a local derby and regular 10k crowds for both teams.

Christchurch last night was amazing. Its really raised the bar, I hope the nix marketing department go all out to get a huge crowd for the final game of the season. Especially since we will either be playing in the finals or playing for a spot.

15k plus would be fantastic, who knows if theres great weather nothing else on 20k wouldnt be out of the question. Come on Wellington drag your mates along.
And if anyone from the marketing department or any hardcore supporters are reading heres an idea. Steal your friends wallets take out 20 bucks buy a ticket then give them back their wallet, ha ha now they have to go! If they dont have a wallet sell their laptop, cellphone or car whatever you can get your hands on and replace that useless item with a valuable one such as a nix vs mariners ticket.

im more than happen for the phoenix to travel. don't get why some of you so called "core" fans get on your high horse about the team travlling - probably because its the only night your wifes will let you out of the house... its doing a good thing exposing another 15,000 + fans to the phoenix and football in general.

well done chch you more than deserve another game.
