I agree with you, but no game has been quite as good as the very first game of the season, the Melbourne Derby for me yet. I was super excited for the league after watching that, but nothing has quite lived up to it yet.

Some interesting stuff here with regard to NZ cricket

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/special-report-the-shame-game/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503307&objectid=10851500

The one thing that seems similar  to our situation is the phrase "disengagement".  Maybe that describes a bit of what is going on, when you only speak about the team in negative terms it is easier to become disengaged from their results.  Just need a couple more good news stories, hopefully beginning on Sunday

Wasn't trying to be angsty, but I realised I was getting a bit off topic in the match thread.

Can someone tell me why 5000 (more with mods and improvements) at Newtown park wouldn't be better than 6000 at the stadium?
It's no further for most people.
It is square(-ish) like a god-damn football pitch should be.
It's strongly associated with football for most Wellingtonians.
It would feel grassroots.
It doesn't have a concourse.
It would have incredible atmosphere. Imagine being the opposition coming to Newtown. It would be like a Colosseum with
It would be a great building block.
It would surely break-even (or does the lack of corporate boxes make it impossible? Could they turn the side of N P 2 into corporate boxes)
I can just imagine more people wanting to go (atmosphere, fomo, underground-y coolness), big games could be played at westpac. Eventually we'd move back.

It obviously would need a lot of work, parking, Better changing rooms, food and drink stalls etc.
I genuinely would like to know why it can't be done, I'm sure there are great reasons, I just wish we could hear it.
Are the improvements too expensive? Are they tied in to a contract at Westpac? Is the number of people at the stadium more important than a sustainable business model? Would the risk of getting 3000 on a shit day be too embarrassing? Is the running track too wide or too important?
Also, who else would like to see it done?

No to Newtown Park because it would be as good as saying this isn't ever going to work. It would send such a negative signal about the club's ambitions that we would never recover from it. It would do nothing to bring new people in, and even if it did there would be no room for them.

Which isn't to say that that Westpac Stadium isn't a tad large. Still the best option we've got though.

I'm going to go ahead and say that relevant sports don't go and run their marketing review through the herald. Or let their historic main ground in Auckland be used as a carpark.

Relevant sports don't need to release stats saying things like 66% of people found some positive synergy in the black caps phrase, but weren't boondoggledly by the words New Zealand cricket.

They'd do things like have some games in NZ during summer. Think the 'Nix are still relevant- the weather has been shite, and we shouldn't be listening to anything that NZ cricket is doing.

Yeh- no Ifill and playing a 442. With Manny imitating a creative midfielder. We've gone back to blocking the mids, but we should still be aiming to score two a game minimum.

The main draw at e stadium is public transport. People are not going to go out to the end of Newtown to watch the Phoenix. It IS  further for most people.

Fantastic Idea if the clubs ambition is to get crowds of 3000 a  match.
No further for most people..... you are having a laugh? Can you imagine 3000 trying to get to Newton on a Sunday or Saturday afternoon.
Yes, The stadium has many faults, but the advantages outweigh the negatives tenfold.
A fifteen thousand rectangular ground on the Pile of logs opposite the stadium. That is what Nirvana would be, not a move to an out of the way, ancient relic of a ground barely suitable for central league.

Newtown is the worst idea ever. You are sending the wrong message to fans, not to mention making it harder to get to for the majority of people

Yep. I personally wouldnt bother with Newtown. Too much of a zoo to get to (literally), parking would be a pig and public transport for me (living in whitby) would be too much of a hassle.

ROF is the only option.

I sort of feel like we are getting right into the season now. People are starting to post about Newtown Park and a purpose built stadium.

Quite comforting to know that these things crop up every season without fail (along with the travelling Nix circus).

Well I knew someone would be an asshole and shoot down the discussion. I guess this has come up a lot before, I just haven't been around to see it. I did put it in Angst for a reason.
5000 people in a stadium for 36,000 puts people off ever wanting to go. Trust me, I've had a lot of people say that to me. Even 10000 doesn't look that good when you have everyone spread out. The whole side behind the camera should be shut off at least.

I kinda forgot about the train station as well.

Wouldn't it be nice if the basin was for all cricket games, and Westpac was square? Not personally fussed about having a roof, I like the weather.

That's not shooting down a discussion, that's having a discussion.

Unless you only wanted people to agree with you?

Can I just ask, when was the last time you went to Newtown park?  You do realise it's essentially a suburban park with a stand from about 1965 which holds about 800 people right?

What I'd quite like to know is what do the powers that be think of the performances after a third of the season.  Is this acceptable?  Unacceptable?  T-X talked about wanting to hear more from the club, to me this sort of communication is lacking, actually telling us about the football and club

Easy - not quite a fair weather supporter, inaugural season member, and only missed three home games, but the extra dudes I try to get along want a decent day, you guys creating good crack and some entertaining footy.  If it's an exciting game and if we draw or lose narrowly playing good footy, with plenty of oohs and aahs and near things, well they don't mind.  So long as we win our fair share and there's spirited endeavour and a level of skill they can admire.  They don't want to be going along to support a bunch of losers and a boring team.  So the poor away game results hurt when I try to round up a few more and the first comment is often, didn't they just loose two/three on a trot?
We've had Daniel, Caceres, Dadi providing some creativity, colour and flair.  Back in the day Ifill was quick enough and exciting and Leo could be dashing. Then we had Rojas for a bit.  Fenton's diving header excited, but our current lot are tradesmen, or playing like it. Right now Ifill is a lesser self and Brockie is the ghost who walks, pops up when he needs to and is a good acquisition, but does not stamp himself on a game.  Stein is tidy quality, but not exactly an excitement machine and no-one is playing off him.  That's how I'm seeing it.  But ...

Having said that, the team has shown flashes of an entertaining creative interpassing game.  We have had our first decent offseason recruitment and we've still got a new front third coming together.  If they can turn on more of the 20 and 30 mins of real quality entertaining attacking footy we've seen in a couple of games and if the absolute crap weather turns to a bit of sun, I think you'll see the crowds back up a fair bit.  I mean the weather for those two games was pretty atrocious for getting out a big crowd.

Sun, fun and good footy.

Pinched this from the match thread as it is quite interesting for discussion on crowds.  Sums up better than I ever could my instinct around the drop in crowds.  Weather and costs a factor definitely, but this is something I think needs to be acknowledged
