If Pav plays like he did against the U20s and Waitak, doesn't worry me much. Also:

So I guess you are confirming that we don't have a goalkeeping coach?

Which is the point that JD was making?

Er, yes, we don't have a goalkeeping coach, but JD seemed to think that we wouldn't be getting one, so I was correcting that possible misconception. We don't have a second keeper yet either, which is actually worrying me more.

Look, to curb my ridiculous optimism at the moment - yes, it really appears that we're running this season on a shoestring. Not surprising considering our funder-owner is hanging on to solvency by the skin of his teeth. If we get the wooden spoon and the crowds stay away in drove, I will be joining the "Time to go Terry" brigade loudly. But I'm going to see what happens before I get miserable. It could be that we make a real challenge for the premiership - perhaps a combination of hiring some quality players and the "siege mentality" of the existing crew will get us the results and attract the punters. Maybe. This isn't the EPL, you can't just buy it. Doloras2011-07-22 22:06:48

JD - you are very artful at shifting your position. You've been predicting the imminent demise of the Phoenix for several months now and suddenly you frame the problem as being "we might not win the league"? Of course this year is all about survival! I'll take any success on the pitch as a bonus.

I think under the circumstances this is a pretty clever appointment. I really don't think there is that much more risk in picking an inexperienced coach who is, however, a known quantity and already fits into the club culture, than bringing in someone more qualified who might not fit in.

I don't think that JD has ever once predicted the imminent demise of the club, but has only raised concern about the direction the club is going in, which is he continuing to do in this thread.  I don't think that anyone can argue that the club is going forward, and I find it strange that people get so angsty when anyone raises concerns about that.  When YF was first formed, JD (amongst others) made it clear that the organisation had to be clear about its objectives, which were first and foremost being vocal about what was in the best interests of the club.  It is not acceptable to just take what the club feeds us, be it in terms of announcements about what the club is trying to do or performances on the pitch, and accept it.  We have to challenge it, and that is in the form of trying to meet with Terry and find out what is actually happening financially, and looking to engage other money people in the country if Terry does not have any plans beyond this dodgy loan - that is what is best for the club.

I am really hung over, so  I don't know if that makes any sense.

not sure if i like this idea of survival mode, and good results are a bonus- so we assume that we might just survive the year, and that would be a result? How long will we have to be in survival mode for?

Surely this season is about getting results. And we will.

We have a strong core of a team, and 2 import gun MVP mega players on the way.

we're gonna win the league
we're gonna win the Asian Champions league
we're gonna win the Club World Cup

just read it - it doesn't make sense.  Sorry.

In a nut-shell ("oh look, I'm in a nut shell.  Where did this enourmous nut come from?"), nothing that is happening at the moment is in the best interests of the club - fact.  Minimal staff, very few players, bad publicity, etc is not an ideal position to be in.  We should be looking at ways to improve this instead of just lapping up the "nothing to see here, move on" messages from the club.

I have no idea what you are accusing me of but I disgree in the strongest terms!

I think as fans many have stopped asking the hard questions a long time ago.  I see this as being a pretty underwhelming appointment considering how highly the man he is replacing, Luciano Trani, was rated.

And I don't see why it is considered heresy to (a) raise that issue for discussion (b) raise the issue of the paucity of our backroom staff and (c) compare the set-up that we have to what would be required to win the league, or in a best case scenario

I think up until now the on field stuff has been pretty well insulated from the off field stuff.  This appointment to me is a sign that could be changing

That's all well and good but you guys are miles and years away from this.  Terry is not now and never has been an approachable sort of guy.  Trying to have a chat with him about his finances is merely going to piss him off, hell it does when his staff do it.

What does that achieve?  Terry isn't going to magically change his position but he'll be f**ked off with people.

It's a lovely ideal, and when you have a 100 year-old-club, shareholders and an engagement of history with people that's fine but the truth is this a club built on one mans ego.  Me, Feverish or Smithy wandering in to his office to tell him what he's doing wrong is only going to bruise that ego and lose any chance the Fever have of a voice with the club and increase his siege mentality.

All we can do is play this out and see where it ends.  Ricki is still talking up signings, plenty of players are coming in and out, and it's not the end of the world that we don't have 22 players three months out from the season start.

The Greenacre decision has come after a number of local options have been talked about (yes including the bonkers Rufer's) and a decision is that Greenie is a good option and the right man to take his first steps in coaching with the club.  It might not work, it might but anyone you appoint that hasn't had 20 years experience is going to be considered a gamble.

Also, a review of the coaching staff of many of the other clubs reveals they are not some well-endowed team of a million coaches, all with UEFA A badges.  They seem to have similar numbers to us (despite having a youth league side as well) except they name club doctors and a million sports scientists.

but has anyone tried?

No one needs to go charging into Terry's office demanding an explanation about what is happening, but I believe that if you approached Tel and said "we have very real concerns about the current situation" he would be willing to meet with you.  He knows the power of this forum (in relation to the club) and he knows that an off the record chat that explains to you guys the situation is manageable will have a massive impact on here (and therefore the year ahead for the club).  All it takes is you guys reporting on here that you have actually seen some kind of plan to progress the club and we have a kicking off point - something to build on.  The other option is he tells you to f**k off, and then Greene gets bumped as a way of a warning to stay out of his affairs - either way, it is a win-win situation.

...about the same thing over and over and over and over. I've said my bit, you've said yours repeatedly. We get it, you're a doom merchant.

You go on about an inability of being able to support a club while being so detached from it in the EPL topics, perhaps you're a bit detatched from the nix...It certainly comes across that way. That doesn't seem to stop you from forcing your doomed opinions down our throats.

Also, the appointment of Greenacre as a coach is not a bad thing at all, if only if it wasn't the fact that he is the only coach, as well as gk coach and marketing manager.

No doubt it is concerning that preseason training is well and truly under way and we have a distinct lack of coaches. It does almost seem like Greenacre was helping out during training anyway so they said "how about a job".

But hey, good for him.

Hibs don't (no jokes about serious teams ) anymore and when they did some of the goalkeeping was appalling so not 100% convinced on the value of gk coaches.

Though I am basically on your side re: the general lack of numbers at the club.

Actually, can Terry still afford goons?

I remember about 5 years ago being in Dockside and some guy came and had a go at Terry.  They ended up having a scrap on the deck outside which Terry won, the other guy was basically dragged out by Terry's goons.  Terry's shirt was ripped so he took it off and put it over his shoulder and carried on drinking.  Within about 5 minutes one of his entourage came back in with a brand new shirt in a plastic wrapper.  He out it on and carried on like nothing had happened.  It was quite surreal...
