My first reaction was that it saves money on hiring someone new!

Cue angst: 'no money for coaches, cost saving, club going down, sack Ricki etc... etc...'

More seriously though, good luck to him, hope he takes to it and is a step toward a career in coaching if that's where he wishes to head. Good opportunity for him to learn under a UEFA accredited coach.aitkenmike2011-07-22 18:08:38

GREENACRE JOINS PHOENIX COACHING STAFF

Wellington Phoenix striker Chris Greenacre has taken the first step on what he hopes will be a long and successful road by joining the coaching staff at the club.

Greenacre, 33, who already holds a UEFA B coaching licence, will continue as a player but will also have a coaching role that takes advantage of his 17 years as a striker in professional football.

In announcing the appointment today, Phoenix head coach Ricki Herbert said he was delighted to be able to call on someone like Greenacre who has such a solid background in football.

The character, application and dedication Chris has shown since joining the Phoenix has been second to none, and I know he will bring those same qualities to his new role, Herbert said.

His involvement on the coaching side will relate directly to the front third of the pitch because he has a good understanding and feel for players who operate in that area.

He will remain a member of the playing staff and be selected according to performance, the same as any player at the club.

Chris has been respected by other members of the squad, and from discussions I have had with senior players in coming to this decision it is evident he will have their support in his new role.

Im delighted to get this over the line and the next thing is to appoint a goalkeeping coach.

Once that appointment is made Herbert said there will be no further additions to a technical staff that includes physiotherapist Wayne Roberts and strength and conditioning coach Lee Taylor.

He said that Taylors long involvement in professional football would be utilised and that he was very pleased with the impact the Englishman had made in his short time at the Phoenix.

Greenacre said deciding to accept Herberts offer didnt require much thought.

It is a fantastic opportunity and I would have been crazy not to jump at it, Greenacre said.

All my close friends know this is what I want to do when I finish playing.

Hopefully I can still play a part as a player because Im still in good nick physically. I enjoy training and going into work every day just as much as I did as a 17-year-old at Man City.
Ill continue to work day in day out and will be treated the same as everyone else while doing so. There will be no special privileges but when Ricki needs a hand I am capable of stepping up to the plate.

I was surprised when he approached me about the role but Im really excited now.

In my 16 years as a pro Ive taken bits from every manager Ive played under and noted what happens in training sessions throughout my career.

Perhaps the most pleasing thing was the response from the other players. They are backing me 100 per cent and when you hear that from your fellow pros it makes all the difference.

Are we really going to have much trouble with the salary cap this year?

Good luck to him. A wealth of experience with some good clubs along with Ricki's guidance can only help make him a fine coach in his own right in the future. Could even be a coup for New Zealand football down the line. That aside, it is hard to look past the club's financial situation being behind the decision.

Half and half as was Kevin Muscat I believe

i automatically thought it was due to financial reasons, and it probably played a part- but good luck to him. A good change for a guy who was going to have to start playing less of a role anyway.

Lets look at this positively
- Greeny is gonna be round for a few more years
- Will accept less of a starting role, but will be reliable and quality off the bench.
- Opens a wee bit more space in the cap for that gun striker

Phoenix must be more inside the salary cap than any other team in the league!

As for Greenacre - it's surprising, but you never know, he might just do a good job. So, fair enough I say.

Muscat had half his salary excluded from the cap when he was an ass.

Might have an issue making the minimum.

yep - sounds good - when I'm 88 he can be 'promoted' to the kit man/media guy role - as the Nix win the world club champs for the third year running

sounds like a plan to me

A question.

If the news was just that wellington phoenix have completed their coaching staff by hiring a coach with just a UEFA B licence and no previous experience would we not be a little bit worried?

By way of comparison, Sydney FC have 9 technical staff

Victory have 5

Central coast have 5

Adelaide have 4 coaching staff (no medical staff profiled)

We have 3 and a half and one of them has never done the job - and two of them aren't coaches.  That's not even enough to put out the cones!

And when are they going to update the f**king player profiles on the website???

This look amateurish I have to say

POINT FAIL

Brisbane Roar have 10 technical staff.  That seemed to go pretty well for them.

Head coach, 2 assistant coaches, goal keeping coach, physio, 3 sports scientists, a club doctor and a team manager

There is a serious issue here, stop skirting it

We are a bit special in that our backroom staff can't be spread across 2 or 3 teams.

Do we really need a club doctor and a chief medical officer like sydney do?

no, but right now I'll settle for any structure that gives us a fighting chance of staying in it

Do I think we'd better with Wynton and Shane as asistants to Ricki ?

No.

Do we need 10 staff for 20 players?

No.

Are we doing this on the cheap ?

Possibly.

If we do it on the cheap do we have more to spend on the players that might win the league?

Possibly.

Remember that Melbourne's staff is headed by Mehmet Durakovic. Professional managerial experience?

Six ACL matches of which he won one.

So we don't have a Director of football, mind you Awaritefe has no experience in coaching or managing at a professional level.

We have a Manager : Ricki
We have an Assistant : Greenacre - As experienced as Muscat was when he started in this role.
We'll appoint an assistant/goal keeping coach.
We've got a strength and conditioning coach.

So, pretty much exactly the same, except our head coach has actual A-League experience.

How's my driving? - Whine here

Name me a serious professional football team anywhere that doesn't have a dedicated goal keeping coach

Dave - their bad appointment doesn't make ours any better.  Agree on the numbers but we have replaced a very well respected assistant with an inexperienced part-timer.  That rings alarm bells for me

If this year is about survival fine - but undoubtedly we are going backwards off the pitch.  This needs to be acknowledged

2B - I have no idea what sports scientists do, but the big clubs have them (I'm not talking about A-League here).

What a surprise from Mr Glass 10% Empty. Yes, I know I'm Ms Glass 10% Full. Someone has to keep the balance.

All your whinging moaning and soothsaying will not do a lick of difference to get the Nix more or better technical staff. So why are you bothering, again? Do you really, seriously think that if we all whinged, moaned, boycotted tickets or whatever, Mystery Man will come riding with his buckets of cash and enthusiasm?

I am going to wait to see the results on the pitch before I start slitting my wrists. Simple as that. If Greeny does a bang-up job you'll look foolish. (And if we get the spoon I'll look foolish. That's the breaks.)

I think instead of getting bogged down in the semantics of what specific coach we need to win the league, or how good a certain individual on the coaching team of another club actually is, we need to look at the real issue here which is that we have a backroom staff that is so thin it makes Kate Moss look like she should be on the next series of the biggest loser.  That is not a good thing.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

I should also point out that if Greeny is going to be playing a lesser role on the pitch, that must mean we have a pretty gun striker or two lined up.
