I've mellowed a little.   How about this then?

We make the zone yellow, as yellow as can be (with a little Green from Brazilian flags), even more yellow than usual.

Then we encourage those outside the zone to do the black thing.  The club struggle to engage with people but when there is an event 'difference' more of the general public get engaged (three points in Newcastle and sneaking into third wouldn't hurt either).  This gives them an event and something different to put on an advertising poster.

I reckon if it adds 500 to the crowd (a win would add more) then they will justify their reasoning and then the zone yellowed up surrounded by black would add a bit of a striped look.

See.  Mellowed.

Black out. Yellow stripe.

This means we will have to stand in the zone.  I will be responsible for teaching my kids hooliganism and chav speak.  That is a heavy price to pay.

I too will make a concession.  If Rachel Smalley (egg ball follower and generally alluring news reader) will wear a Nix shirt on TV3 I will wear a black thingy to the game.

At least it is finally some marketing. I have noticed more of it since the nix nine took over. Could just be a coincidence, or maybe theyre making more of a priority of it than previously.

Look up "Fossa dei Leoni" under google images. (This is just one example, other clubs, plenty of them, have similar stories to tell).

Those sorts of displays are amazing. They are also very complex.

Some sort of coordination between club and ultras helps makes things like that happen, and run smoothly.

It's not done with the marketing department thinking and moving in one direction and the fan organisation(s) thinking and moving in a completely different direction. That doesn't however mean that they discuss and coordinate EVERYTHING together either, but SOME communication, understanding and common approach certainly helps.

I agree that Marketing are not trying to get the YF people along to the ground. But that does not mean that there should be NO COMMUNICATION at all between the club and the supporters groups.

Even if, at a minimum, the marketing people would read the YF forums (Maybe they do? I hope so) so that over time they come to understand ( a ) that this sort of idea annoys at least some of the core supporters and ( b ) why it does so, then that would be good.

The apparent lack of:

(i) effective engagement with the supporters group(s) over promotions
(ii) embracing the supporters organisation(s) wish to add colour and flavour to the game day atmosphere (sometimes)

is not something that is unique in NZ Football to the Phoenix. The same angst was rife amongst Bloc 5 in the Kingz days... however, eventually representatives of the supporters groups sat in on meetings.

That sort of idea, if implemented correctly, can help build the bond between the club and the fanatical supporters, to the benefit of both groups.

I urge the WelNix guys to actively scout the football world and ask clubs with large supporters groups how they liaise with them, and what they have done that has helped build crowds.

An idea I have had that is aimed at building crowd numbers and delivering real benefit to loyal fanatical supporters is this:

For each season supporters can earn themselves a free (or half price) season ticket (or free team strip) for the following season if they purchase 3 full price adult tickets for every home game of the season.

You could implement this for next season.

First of all it promotes people buying season tickets for next season.

It also actively encourages core supporters to promote attending home games to the friends and work colleagues.

It has a positive net revenue effect for the club.

It increases the likelihood of further season ticket sales for the following year.

To do it, you would need to set up a system with Tiketek that allowed season ticket holders to buy tickets (preferably in advance of game day, but if they were really slick people could buy them in this way at the gate too)  and tag them against their season ticket number. I would suggest you would need to physically show your season ticket when purchasing the tickets... and the Ticketek person would need to record the season ticket number against the ticket purchases. Then, at the end of the season, any season tickets with 3 or more tickets for each home game would automatically be able to be identified and flagged as eligible to receive the special "Promoter" deal for the next season.

Ideally (to be really slick) they would proactively contact all such eligible season ticket holders and not require the season ticket holders to contact them to claim their reward...

Imagine if 500 (or more) season ticket holders bought into each purchasing 3 tickets each for each home game and then finding friends/colleagues etc. to give/sell them to...

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Maybe that is a bit seedy.

Alternative: If John Campbell can wear a Tard shirt and Gourdie kicks the sh!t out of him, I will wear black.

Ooooh. very masterful, Phil. I agree though. I think it's a dumb idea, but it's out there now so the least we can do is try and make it a success

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I just tweeted about this and instantly got the following reply for someone (who I don't know to be active on YF forums):

"I can't wait for that game!"

I told her to tell her friends about it and she replied:

"Lol i have already! I know about 10 people going already and my phoenx top is black yay!"

Yup but that fact that she "coudln't wait" for "that game" makes me wonder.

I was just pointing out that she's not known to be hardcore like those that post here but that obviously doesn't exclude her from being hardcore.

Interesting that she's been talking to friends and talked of 10 coming. All good signs regardless.

I guess its more of a plead to get people to turn out (and wear black) so we can win and make the playoff. I don't really understand personally how it makes people excited for the game, but it does seem to.

I guess it is a bit more forceful than just a standard poster advertising the game, that people tend to switch off to.

It's been proven time and time again that something "special" (or even something ordinary but re-labelled as such) attracts more attention.

- it's a novelty
- there is mystery surrounding this so-called secret event
- people tend to have some kind of black clothing and by doing this they can choose to "dress up" and feel involved (vs. having a yellow-out and not everyone can get involved if they don't have something yellow in the wardrobe).

We had some issues with the YELLOUT semi as well as in Dunedin last month with people suddenly realising they didn't have yellow to wear to the game.

I'm not promoting the ditching of yellow altogether, but having a one-off black event hardly disrespects the club does it? Surely not when one of the primary colours of the jersey is black, and the Season 1 strip was predominantly black too.

Why does Yellow Fever run promos like (forgive me because I can't recall the exact details) "bring 5 friends to this game" or similar? And doesn't YF occasional dub specific clashes with some kind of title/tagline as part of trying to promote those games?

It's clear that this promo isn't going to find favour here and I'm not entirely sure about it myself but as has been pointed out already this is not really about Yellow Fever. Nor is it turning backs on Yellow Fever IMHO. At least there is a marketing effort going into trying to raise awareness and interest in the game, which is NOT an easy task.

Honestly despite hours spent in Dunedin trying to promote awareness there were still people on game day in the main street telling me that they weren't aware that there was a Phoenix game on that night, as well as others who thought it was happening the following week, etc.

Similarly to get media coverage locally is not an easy task, and thankfully MrsChan was up to the job of letting locals know a little about his sad tale of last year, which meant coverage money couldn't buy.

It's a shame that YF can't benefit (financially) from getting more people into the FZ.

The the YF could be responsible for filling up the Fever Zone each week, doing the marketing etc.

The Nix promote general seating. Be interesting to see the results.

I don't know how the Nix Marketing Dept. are going to measure how effective this idea is going to be as this is the same game they are offering cheaper tickets via Capital Football and Welly Football clubs to.

Minor niggle, but nothing of the black out was mentioned in the email I got from my club iin regards to that game. Maybe it's not the case for others.

Seems like "hey we have all these marketing ideas to get bigger crowds, lets do them all at the same time but not have them linked together at all."

Not sold on the black out idea, saw it on a poster was like "what the?"

I think you're making too much of this. The heart aren't going to be encouraged by a promotion that encourages people to wear black. A marketing promotion is not going to cause us to lose the game. It may however get some more people into the game.
