Personally I hated the shirts. We play in yellow and black stripeys, and if we really wanted to have a charity special, then a subtle alteration to the normal strip would surely have sufficed.

Yep - although wasn't what you'd call a black out in the crowd.

Slightly disappointed that there weren't any collection buckets that I could see in the teeming 13k mass. My cash stayed in the wallet.

Also rather strange that we were asked to look for someone's credit card twice (didn't find it - twice).

Yeah the TAB got a bloody sweet sponsorship deal, we were bombarded with them before during, at halftime, and after the match! It got a bit much..

So if this theme was for charridy, other than bidding on trademe for sweaty black shirts, what other benefit does the organisation get?

The shirts have been online a few hours and already the bids exceed $6000. "Other than the shirts" may be missing the point.

It can actually go past 90mins, as it went to 90:09 before they set it back to 90. Why not just let it go? Then we'd know how much injury time has been.
 
This is probably what is keeping a lot of casual punters away. A big issue in my opinion.

Maybe there should be a secondary countdown clock so that the entire stadium can count it down from 10 in time? To the tune of Go West maybe?

We were there yesterday as always, and I honestly couldn't see any major difference from any other home game. There were a bunch of Sunderland-supporting willowy young beauties in peculiar shoes encouraging people to bet (the shame of it!) , there seemed to be a lot more kids, I saw the South African Sevens team, and Auckland FC (looking pretty miserable as it happens) were there.

Oh, and we had the greatest game and win of the season.

Perhaps the marketing triumph in this game was to;
(1) Change nothing,
(2) Achieve approximately bugger all, and
(3) Realise and accept that the way to get bigger crowds is to win more games.

I hope Gareth didn't pay AbFab Marketing Inc a lot of dollars, because they made no difference whatsoever, so far as we could tell.

We still won though, we're second in the League, and the sun is shining

Nostalgia isnt what it used to be...........

I respectfully disagree that the marketing made "no difference whatsoever". We've gone on winning runs before. The home record has always been the envy of many teams in the league. This was the biggest crowd all season (by far).

Independent of winning form there were certainly other factors at play. ahmad2012-01-30 09:44:29

That is one major NE England faux-pas there GD! 
 
We moseyed over to Aisle 32 at half time - thought we saw the ECFC and SA 7s, plus a bunch of Heart fans (didn't note if they were willlowy, young or beauties).

I think the keys to the bigger crowd was a) team winning b) time of the year c) getting in the papers. Morgan fired all sorts of things around and a number of them gained traction. I don't think you can track it back to one specific thing. Pity we only have 1 home game in Feb, would be nice to capitalise on some momentum.

There was no black out.
 
There was however a lot of other marketing going on and so how much the novelty theme made to the crowd will be debatable.  If the moeny had been used for marketing without the novelty theme would it have got 13k?  I think so.

Here's another summation:

Those that hated the Black Out theme will put the crowd attendance purely down to winning form, ignoring that this is the biggest crowd of the season by at least 50%.

However I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who embraced the Black Out as a one-off marketing promo, that would put the crowd purely down to the marketing.
