I'm curious to know what the players thought of the atmosphere and the crowd response.

Agreed - would love to have a bit more media coverage of players and coaches reactions to the game and the crowd

Indeed, that was funny

As for the thread starter - that's football mate, simple as that. It was a good laugh and I don't think there was any malice in it.

Well, I certainly had a good laugh.

I think my favorite moment was 'Smeltzy, you used to be good, you used to be good' I tried to join in on that one whenever I could but struggled to sing it without laughing.

I think the best chant was "We want 7, we want 7 !" Because not in my wildest dreams did I think we would ever get to chant that one !

heck I was struggling with we want 5, the last time we chanted that was against perth is season 1. Could never have expected 6 against one of the stronger teams in the league.

How on earth can anyone say the booing had bad intentions? It was clearly good natured ribbing which he acknowledged with the wave. And when he walked off after the game he got a standing ovation so I don't think there's any hard feelings.

I notice that when Shane got the ball watching on TV the crowd seemed to be booing. Now if this so, I think we should have more respect for the best A league striker and ALL WHITE striker who we have massive hopes for. I also notice this occurrence happened when Burtos played for the glory.

I believe we need to treat our All White player with some respect no matter what club they play for.

at club level Smeltz is a judas; who we booed and then clapped off in good spirits - you would have seen this if you had been at the game rather than in front of your tv

He'd have been more annoyed if we didn't boo him. That's disrespectful, not booing an ex-player in the same league.

Yeh in the pregame warm ups, I watched Smeltzy practise kicking his shots over the top, so I reckon thats what he wuld have done if bloody Siggy and Dura had given him a chance

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

are you Smeltzy are you Smeltzy are you Smeltzy in disguise?

Mate this isn't an issue of respect. the very reason why we booed him was because we felt threatened by him. He's one of the best strikers in the league and has a special place in our hearts as a kiwi who plays for NZ and gave so much to the Nix.

BUT he was given a blank cheque and still decided to go. Fair enough. that's his career choice. but don't expect to come back here and receive a hero's welcome.
I assure you that when he'll play for the All Whites everyone will sing We Love You Smeltzy We Do! It's just how it goes.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: we should put more pressure on opposition strikers. Aloisi, Brosque, Fowler and the tons of 16-year old-Aussie-pretty boys that come to the RoF thinking they're the sh*t..if we got into their heads and messed them up a little it would only do us good.

You could totally see that Smeltz was affected by the booing and he didn't do anything all game. Perhaps if we'd all sung his praises he would have scored a brace and we would have lost the game.

In the end he gave us a wave: that means that he understood what the rules of the game are. and so did we.

All done in good humour. He knows we will all be cheering for him in a couple of weeks. I bet he's p#5sed that he didnt get to run through our backs like we went through theirs.

Perhaps for Remi's satisfaction we should sing "we love you Judas we do"? - Only kidding fellas, November 14 - The day of Reckoning, EVERY All White will be a national hero.

Nah, HN is just having some fun. Last season Ipswich came to visit and deserved the 3 points to be fair. Shame we're not playing them this weekend otherwise I'd really fancy our chances.

I have no problem booing Smeltz.  If I was there I'd have booed him.  Although everyone keeps saying it was very chummy, slapping on the back, having a laugh booing.  In all honesty my booing would have been a spot more intense than that as I wasn't happy that he left.  Not to disrespect him, just expressing my feelings on the matter.

Roll on Nov 14.

Somethig like this (but don't get too angsty if the detail is not quite right):

Boos @ 0-0 (anything to get at a potential threat)
Judas What's the Score? @ 1-0 (not sure if opportunity would come again, make hay etc)
Smeltzy What's the score? @ 3-0 (relief, won't be caught)
Smeltzy Giz a wave @ 4/5 - 0 (delerium)
Smeltzy applauded off @ 6-0 (carnival...we've done our job, make sure you do yours on the 14th)

To add to the Smeltz related chants that were used on Sunday

"You used to be good"
"Does your Mrs know you're here"

Both of those used early on

For sure, and more on top. I was trying to chart the continuum of 'let's be horrible --- let's be nice' over the course of the game, as some people seem to get their knickers in a twist over a bit of banter.
