Where do you think Ricki will play him?  Bring him in for Ferrante in midfield or call him a striker?

Could be seen as a fill in/replacement for Diego if his ongoing medical problems don't improve perhaps.

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

Can only see him being played behind a striker our out wide. So unless Diego is deployed in a deeper position he is the most likely replacement. Unlucky to Daniel, Hearfield, Costa and Rojas who looked to have dropped down the pecking order.

                        Paston
Muscat       Durante      Sigmund        Lochead
                  McKain        (Ferrante/Brown/Lia/Diego)
Caceres/Ifill       Caceres/Ifill            Bertos
                          Greenacre

                        Paston
Muscat       Durante      Sigmund        Lochead
                  McKain        (Ferrante/Brown/Lia/Diego)
Caceres                                                Bertos
                       Ifill             Greenacre

Would have preferred a really solid CM that can control matches

I am hopeful that this will be a good signing. Welcome Adrian.

While I am happy the Phoenix have signed another player, I feel they would be better signing left/right fullback, to create some competition for the back four places.

Phoenix already have plenty of mid-fielders, so either they're planning to drop some, or they're just looking to fill up the roster slots.

Unless Diego is already leaving this is a silly signing. He's never impressed me consistantly in his 3-4 seasons in the A-League. He wont help us move forward. Just another Kwasnik.

Could be a good signing but don't think we need him. He has Potential but he needs to really prove himself..

He's not an import is he?

or perhaps they are going to take one of the midfielders who has been woefully inept in the attacking third at times (McKain) and encourage him to fight for a place in the back four (where he has previously stated that he feels more comfortable)

...but McKains role isn't to be in the final third, that's what Ferrante and Diego are meant to be doing and singularly failed at yesterday.

He's not an import, South American heritage but Australian.

any signing that potentially avoids Ferrante playing is good by me! if he helps us on attack and getting better service for Ifill and Greenacre then all happy - the experience level could help a little too.

Why did he part ways with the Mariners half way through a two year contract (according to Wikipedia)?

Ok, first of all that clear form button is retarded, If I wish to clear space I will highlight what I have written and delete it

For the second time:
I see you point and agree but it would be nice if could when he needs to. It's surprises like Keane running from deep to appear in the box which can help break down teams who have been dealing with your plan a well all afternoon.
Hell, he might even need to pass it into the final third now and then even if he gets a nose bleed heading there himself.

While McKain might not break into the back four, treating him as one could create much needed competition for places there which would serve as further motivation for the current lot to raise their game.

Nothing on there yet but on the transfer speculation thread his Facebook chat suggests he was not happy at not getting a game, so has moved in order to play. This suggests he's been told he won't be warming the bench at Phoenix.

Wouldn't be too unhappy to see him replace either Diego or Ferrante at this stage.

r he could be another bench player, surely there are going to be alot of unhappy players in a few more weeks.

No one likes to ride the bench, let alone not even make it. I just do no think he was what we needed. he couldn't get a game at the coast, but potentially expects to start for us. I didn't realise the CCM midfielders were that much better than ours.

Hope i am proven wrong.

Diego has been poor, but he has not been played in position, he is not a wide player but a central attacking mid. Perhaps if he got played there he'd reach his potential.

The same could/has been said of where Bertos has played. Prefers the left, plays the right, or vice versa.
The story also came up over whether Ifill was better as a striker, or a wing, yada yada.

The fact is, regardless of where you prefer to play, you're selected in a role, and you need to do it, or otherwise GTFO.

Being out of position is no excuse to keep your toys to yourself and refuse to play in the sandpit (maybe that's why Diego got pulled early...)

The reverse is also true though.  Sure you can put Diego anywhere and expect him to play, but if you want him to perform at his peak and provide the kinds of service we're expecting of him, he should be in a position he knows and excels at.

Give Ferrante, Lia, Daniel and Caceres a quarter of a game each

Isn't Adrian Caceres one of the 4 tenors?

I'm still trying to figure out what miracle Daniel was meant to perform with only 10 minutes. Not the best tacticle move Ricki. Roll on Friday and some home support. Lonegunmen2009-08-31 17:34:12

I rate Caceres as an attacking option - he's a talented player, both as a dribbler and a "final pass" player.

However, it really does throw the balance of the squad out - as previously mentioned Troy, Daniel, Rojas et al will find it that much harder to get any game time now.

Maybe this could allow Diego to play a slightly deeper creative role (i.e. where Ferrante has been playing), more in a Fabregas mould - with guys like Bertos and Caceres providing the pace to free up Ifill & Greeny in the middle, heck, that would be one hell of an exciting attacking lineup, on paper anyway!

Btw, I appear to be about the only person around, who thinks that apart from that inept performance vs sydney, Diego has shown quite a bit of talent so far, moreso than I perhaps expected.

As cultured as Che Bunce's left foot and as profilic as John Lammers

Caceres playing history:

Born in Buenos Aires, Caceres previously played for Perth in the National Soccer League and Southampton, Brentford, Hull City, Yeovil, Aldershot and Wycombe Wanderers in England.

Must be quality.

Its no longer a problem.

It's because they've known each other for so long. His games been aching but we're too shy to say it. Inside they both know whats been going on. He knows the game and they're gonna play it.

Where do the phoenix get off on signing average player after average player! Waste of money hes not going to bring anything of substance he has played 80 odd games in the last 4 years in A-league and has scored 8 goals i think. Were do we get off thinking that is acceptable for attacking players! Thats the biggest problem for the phoenix they dont have any one who will score goals other than Greenacre given some service. Yes Leo Bertos is a good good player and has been playing well this season but he doesnt have an eye for goal. McKain, Ferrante, Diego couldnt score in a brothel. I mean it wouldnt matter so much if they create something too but they dont. Look at the stats of most of our players:

Leo Bertos : 99 games since he left Rochdale in 2005 for the likes of Perth, Phoenix, All Whites and 5 goals. Thats 1 in 20 for a attacking player.

John McKain 132 game since 2003 for 2 goals. Yes majority at Centre back but hes playing midfield now.

Diego : 31 games in the a-league for 1 goal and he is rubbish

TIm Brown : 88 Games for 5 goals for All Whites, Nix, Newcastle etc

Ferrante: 46 games for 2 goals in A-League. He wouldnt even carve the NZFC up

Daniel 38 Games for 4 goals still not good enough

Hearfield 31 games for 2 goals in A-league. Also no end product

Vince Lia 42 games for 1 goal in A-League

So add up most of our midfield and wide options and for about 500 games of senior footy they have scored 20 odd goals which is absolutely pitiful.

Im not trying to compare but if you look at overseas teams and the productivity midfielders have then guys score every 3rd, 4th, 5th game and wingers even more.

My biggest concern is just how poor the end product is of our midfield and wingers.
