Are these games somewhat of a trial for Carlos and Kenny? I.e. are they running out the B team to give someone the chance to impress? Would make sense for an out of window fixture

Exactly - you will see here in the squads listed on Wikipedia if you compare the "Current Squad" (called up v Chile & Korea) and the "Recent Call-Ups" below it, they fielded closer to their top team v the Socceroos last November in their previous international and their very top team v Mexico in their final World Cup qualifier last October including their many European-based players like Bryan Ruiz (Fulham, now PSV on loan) and Bryan Oviedo (Everton).
Chile also fielded largely a "B" team.

2pm kick off for Costa Rica v South Korea today. http://gofirstrow.eu/ has two stream links listed.

It looks like neither started but Kenny has been subbed on late in the 2nd half. Costa Rica is currently losing 1-0 and down to 9 men.

Apparently Ernie is worried that Carlos might have done his calf again. :(

Ernie worried Carlos exacerbated his existing calf injury against Chile and so didn't play v Korea:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/9652165/Measured-Merrick-clears-the-air

(last paragraphs):

"Merrick will have Costa Ricans Kenny Cunningham and Carlos Hernandez back from international duty to meet Adelaide, although he's not sure what sort of nick Hernandez is in.

Cunningham played the full 90 in Costa Rica's 4-0 loss to Chile and then came off the bench in their 1-0 defeat against South Korea. But Hernandez only had 60 minutes in the first game and none in the second and Merrick fears he might've tweaked the calf that was injured in the 5-0 mauling of Melbourne Victory.

The pair arrive back in Wellington late tomorrow night, before the team fly out to Auckland on Wednesday morning to begin preparations for Adelaide."

Match report:

South Korea's goal scored by one of the tallest players in their national team history, 1.96 m. (6' 6") Kim Shin-Wook.

Two Costa Ricans sent off.

I think Stuff got that wrong, numerous sauces say Costa Rica made about 5 subs that game, including bringing Carlos on in the late stages.

Neither Carlos nor Kenny called up for Costa Rica's friendly v Paraguay mid-week - looks like the manager is looking at other players for the World Cup. But he says this is not necessarily his final squad. Has called up four midfielders playing in Scandinavia plus Bryan Ruiz (PSV Eindhoven, on loan from Fulham):

http://www.concacaf.com/article/ruiz-named-to-costa-rica-roster

"Undoubtedly, this list does not represent what the complete call to World Cup will be, but we are looking at a few alternatives,” said Pinto.  “Similarly we want to continue the process of with some players, but this does not mean that they have a fixed place at the World Cup.”

I've been convinced that Merrick is The Shiznit as far as coaching goes, although I'm still not sure whether he has the right players. But one thing I miss from Ricki's reign is the "no cocks" policy.

Hernandez is worse than a petulant child - doesn't turn up to training because he's injured but then spits his dummy when he's not picked to play and the coach wants to assess and manage his injury and recovery.

I'd be very surprised if going directly to the media without club approval is not contrary to his contact's terms and conditions.

I'm over the selfish sulky prick - I'd be glad to see the back of him.

Nah it's perfectly normal in Costa Rica football circles apparently:

"Third-Person Person

Dr. Lutz: Tell me, why do you insist on referring to yourself in the third person? It's intensely irritating!
Hercule Poirot: It helps Poirot to keep a distance from his genius.

Poirot, "The Labours of Hercules"

A Third-Person Person is a character who always refers to himself or herself in the third person. In Japanese media, this is a standard tic of very young children. As a result, girls who are childish or cutesy may be seen referring to themselves in this manner. In older characters, however, it may be a sign of psychological issues, such as a very traumatic event in their past. It also may be a sign of humility, so samurai and noblewomen usually refer to themselves in the third person when talking to their lords. If a character transitions into a Third-Person Person over the course of the series, watch out for signs of Yandere, and keep tabs on all pointy objects. (hidden linguistic note)

On the other hand, western Costa Rican footballer character who refers to himself in the third person will usually either be vain, egotistical, or self-absorbed — the implication being that he is so in awe of himself that even he views himself objectively.

Or the character is a Hulk Speaking primitive. Or the character could be just a Cloud Cuckoolander with a weird speech mannerism. An egotistical villain will especially refer to himself in this fashion if he has a cool or impressive-sounding name or title. Sometimes a character with Acquired Situational Narcissism will temporarily become a Third-Person Person as a sign of his suddenly expanded ego. There are examples of this trope used in the Japanese way, though, such as Elmo from Sesame Street. The technical term for this is "illeism", from the Latin word for "that" (sometimes also used like "he") with "-ism" attached. If the speaker does this for only for a story in which they are revealed as the central character, it's ...And That Little Girl Was Me or Narrator All Along. See also Hulk Speak and Verbal Tic. Almost as bad as people who insist their name has a "The" in there somewhere. Pokémon Speak is when a character says their name over and over because it's literally the only thing they can say. "

Significant breach of contract.  ie: "no employee is to communicate with any media formally or informally without clearance from..."

Permalink Permalink

There's always the prospect of a mutual contract termination too. If he doesn't want to stay and thinks he can get a contract elsewhere, and the club don't want him then he could go.

It's a shame he's such a petulant lazy bastard because he really is a fine footballer when he's on song.

So I understand that Carlos has been a bit of a knob end in the last week.

But to be honest it has surprised me the number of people who have all of a sudden been all "he's such a cock, always has been, get rid of him" etc etc. Seems to me that there are either a few haters who have come out of the woodwork, or a few who have been his biggest fan one week and want him gone the next.

I think it would be absurd to terminate his contract. Yes he's a bit of a child, but he's a bloody good player. Am I the only one in the minority on this?

Nah I just this it's reflective of the mood of supporters at the mo. We've had games played in silly places, horrible injuries, poor ROF efforts and now Carlos acting the child. I think everyone feels if only things had gone a bit differently...

Folk feel he's being disrespectful to Ernie and as we know Ernie has HUGE respect from us lot.

Also we've always seen our squad as fairly united and have never given much time to those that criticize the team from within it or don't put in the effort (Gaoshite). I think if we were challenging for the play-offs then we would have probably tolerated his immaturity a little more.

I'd add that he's also an experienced player and presumably one of our highest paid, and that from someone like that you expect leadership and work ethic, or at the very least an admission that he has been carrying an injury and isn't a hundred percent.

No one denies that he's a damn good A League player but it's the baggage he brings with him which is the issue.

If part of the concern with re-signing Stein is that he is getting too slow to play as a striker then I'd rather we signed him and played him in the Carlos role and ditched Carlos than keeping Carlos and ditching Stein. At least Stein seems passionate and professional and is a good role model for our kids coming through.  If Carlos is gonna pull this shit then I don't think he's worth keeping around for the good of the team in general.

He was unhappy before his family was here, than he was fine for a month-two, now he plays the little princess, I don't like that, I like honest hard work and he is puffed after 60min anyway. He has some talent, but fuck it, I would bench him, he is not the future. Give Stein instead a two years contract and convert him into a midfield role.

Some of the best players in the world are absolute fuck wits. Look at Suarez for example. I honestly dont give a shit how much of a cock Carlos is if hes winning us games. This whole 'sack him' or 'il be glad to see the back of him' attitude is stupid, and as equally immature. We shouldn't live in a world where we just discard people because we cant be bothered working out issues with them.

Good point, except that he isn't winning us games. In fact we look better without him, and with huysegems in his role. If you couple that with talk of huysegems possibly being let go, it's only natural that calls are being made to let Carlos go instead (though isn't he on a 2 year deal?)

I disagree with this. I support a football team because I enjoy it, I do not enjoy supporting people I do not like in the slightest (not saying I feel this way about Carlos, but if he keeps it up...).
Its pretty debatable that he is winning us games at the moment anyway. I think we've looked better without him.

A petulant sulk? Quite possibly.  Language difficulties? Also quite possibly.

He has had a couple of rough games recently, probably injury related, but up until a couple of weeks ago, he was leading the Johnny Warren Medal competition for the best player in the league.  Six goals admittedly a couple of Pens, and 10 assists in 17 games this year

To go from there to saying we are better off without him is all kinds of stupid in my opinion.
