I would like to know which of the mayoral candidates will support a new bye-law to force Phoenix management to adopt Phoenix City by The Skatalites as the run-on song for the Nix.

John McGrath - you seem prepared to say just about anything to get elected, surely I can at least get your backing!

Enough of all the talking,  the candidates should fight it out with a penalty shootout!

Karl (Soprano ,Carlucci) Gifford, the most diminutive candidate in the mayoral race  certainly has the wackiest hoardings ,stenciled  it seems! Kiwi Jambo2007-09-25 12:42:51

I would also like to know which of the mayoral candidates will support a council bye-law to get rid of those ugly f**king hoardings!

The whole town is ruined by them and half of them seem to be vandalised already creating an even bigger mess. Don't vote for anyone with a hoarding!

And why can't we have Phoenix City as the run-on song for the Nix? Or even just played at all?

Answers please...

Went to the meet the mayoral  candidates meeting at the Baptist church in Island bay last night, so much more exciting than going to the football <YEAH RIGHT>
Anyway it was a reasonably good game with the current mayors team still smarting from last weeks shock defeat at the Te Raekahau Stadium to underdogs Nimby United .
Choosing a defensive formation with her trusty keeper Ray Apihine Mercer in goal the incumbent of the chain played a holding pattern avoiding several slide tackles from the buoyant south coast (eastern ward ) side and soaking up most of the pressure!  the game was reffed well by the man in the middle ( some bloke from the church)  and it wasn't   until the 40th minute when a free kick awarded on the edge off row seven next to the jogging for Jesus poster that saw the outstanding Kiwi Jambo  step up and send a screamer  re the Beckham on the rates question  past the hapless Mayor and  leaving the  outstretched goalie  Mercer to desperately watch the vote punch its way into the Old ballot box.
The beleaguered  Mayors side  seemed to grow more and more ponderous as  defeat approached  with the  other candidates  gaining encouragement from midfield maestro Jambo and  attempting shots from all round the hall ,at the final whistle or rather the final tinkle of the small bell that the bloke from the church had, saw   the exasperated  chain wearer ask where all her loyal supporters from YF were ? and suggesting that the rumored free beer /quiz night at the BB had actually been secretly voted through by an unelected YF sub committee   preventing a sizable traveling support from  turning up!!

So thats five days and the  only candidates to take up Feverishes invitation to canvas on the YF site are  Ruben ,Richie, Mcgrath, Goulden and Frankie Mac!
Surely its a great chance to talk to a  relatively captive audience(some would argue that it should be a completely captive audience with Asylums and straight jackets  often mentioned!)and try to convince us why they should be the chosen one, the one who should rightfully wear the one chain that rules them all!
So come on lets hear ya ,as i said  before "come and have a go if yi think yir hard enough!!"

Be sure to look out for my Mayoral billboard truckat the nextgame. It says in jest "I'll play for the Wellington Phoenix if John McGrath is Mayor" I hope you can see the humorous side of this and who knows David Beckman will like Wellington so much he just might want to stay.

I saw that today. Great stuff.

well, vote for me and I promise that the Phoenix will win on Sunday.

I also promise that Feverish will not be allowed on to the pitch at the Ring of Fire at half time, to do wheel-barrows with Thommo anymore.

Please note - I can only have some influence on one of these promises....

I see that theres a Gordon Strachan standing for the  Capital District Health Board , Im amazed he finds the time along with  coaching  Glasgow Celtic no wonder they got beat by Hibs last weekend!!
On the Mayoral front watched John Mcgrath whizzing round town in an old banger with his picture on the side and a  loud speaker sellotaped to the roof ,i thought it was an ice cream van and i tried to flag him down for a double cone and two flakes with extra sprinkles of hundreds and thousands but all he had was tequila Popsicles!!

I have my voting forms but don't know:

a) how to vote (do I post it, deliver it, clean the stove with it?)
b) who to vote for

Can someone smart (ie Marius) answer these questions for me?

Not sure if the Wellington city council  boundary's extend that far !
I don't think Mcgrath will be the number one preference on my ballot paper but i do admire his energy, he has been driving round Wellington in that old black van with its loud speaker for 62 hours solid and is now personally responsible for the complete depletion of the Maui gas field so if you want a mayor with the ecological footprint the size of a Sasquatch then he's yir man !

1)With the stv  voting system you can vote for all the candidates in order of preference
2)post it its free
As for the oven i use Marine Education Centre  publicity leaflets you can pick them up for nothing next to the soon to be redundant fish tank in the Reading cinema complex!!

Boy don't politicians talk crap most of the time. Good on some of the mayoral candidates for having a say on this topic but for god's sake why don't they get their facts right.

They all say that we have to be accountable about using council(tax payers) money to bring Beckham to Wellington to play the Phoenix.  THAT IS NOT TRUE!!!!!!!!

Its the PHOENIX who are paying for Beckham to come(or rather Terry's bank account).
The Wellington Council are putting money into promoting and advertising to get people to come to the city to see the game and enjoy our wonderful city and spend money here!

This is no less than what they do all the time for other events such as the Wearable Arts or the International Arts Festival.   GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TERRY FOR MAYOR!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone living on the Kapiti Coast - Nigel Wilson is standing for the regional council - writes the football articles for the Kapi-Mana. He's definitely pro-football even though he supports Liverpool

Well the one simple fact i would like to see is how much public money this democratically elected council are going to spend on advertising this event  (like duh no one knows he's coming so we have to secretly spend rates  money on a publicity campaign ,yeah right ,Kerry if i didn't know better i might think theres a local election about to happen)
Theres nothing wrong with David Beckham coming it might be a great show who knows,it dosen't float my boat personally but for those who enjoy irrelevant friendly s then sure go for it, funny haircuts the odd free kick special crashing past what is certainly going to be the Phoenix second team !
There is however  something rather suspect about a mayor a few weeks out from an election gate crashing a good party and trying to look popular by instantly and secretly providing public funds to publicise the event  i feel we are being used ,manipulated by the Prendergast  regime in a desperate attempt to hold on to the chain for another three years its about politics not football don't get sucked in !
But you are right about one thing politicians do talk crap!

There's no question that David Beckham's appearance at the Stadium will be great for Wellington and a huge boost for the Phoenix.  I'm really looking forward to meeting him and I'm confident he'll fill the stadium while creating a return for the city of $5-8 million his one appearance. I'd also like to point out that his appearance is being paid for by commercial not residential ratepayers.

Well better late than never i suppose!
Sadly i  do think you will be re-elected as Mayor of Wellington  not because of any wonderful  political  philosophy  or vision on your part and certainly  not because of any great commercial  brilliance i think the recent MEC debacle proves that($5000,000 spent in an attempt to undermine the councils own south coast planning rules, yir avin a laugh!!) you will cling  to the chain  simply because the opposition will split the vote  allowing you in through the back door for another term !
I just hope that if the millions of dollars you mention  does eventuate   that  the  cash will be re-invested in sports grounds and in particular the shoddy over used under maintained   football grounds around Wellington ,perhaps not as sexy and publicity grabbing as meeting a Hollywood football player but maybe something a local council should be involving itself in!.I believe that the future of football (soccer) in Wellington lies more in creating an environment where players particularly  woman ,children and  youth players can have suitable conditions to learn and enjoy  the game,  than it does a single glitzy game featuring a player at the tail end of his career!Karori park drainage committee v's David Beckham i know its a tough choice!
Also i still have yet to hear any real justification for the secrecy involved in allocating funds from the public purse for the promotion of this game (the rates are not tagged its all public money)   , please don't  just trot out the old commercial sensitivity line again ,you showed very little sensitivity commercial or otherwise   when you announced that you would be giving the MEC  seven million dollar interest free loan for that bizzare fish zoo project and underwriting the second consent  process to the tune of $200,000!Surely an elected council should have the decency to let its citizens know how much money they intend spending on events that carry  a financial risk ala Tiger Woods in Paraparaumu a few years back.

Anyway on the assumption that I am responding to the real Mayor thanks for taking the time to post on this board as several other candidates are yet to do so and are just being  big  scared Jessie's !

Up to this morning only 18 per cent of eligible voters had cast their votes in Wellington, maybe the value of democracy is only realised when its not there ,just look at Myanmar or Zimbabwe or Tienanmen square !
We are incredibly lucky that in the past men and women fought for the right for us  to be given a chance to decide who represents us!
So whatever your outlook ,politics or point of view post that envelope back if only to show respect for the people who  have been tortured and even  killed in their fight for the simple right to vote.

Some people say "well its just a local election so it doesn't really matter" i reckon that in some ways its arguably more important to vote in local elections than the parliamentary ones  as decisions made at a local  level  can have a more direct  impact on an an individual ie house values ,where his/her dog can crap etc   than some of the bizzare goings on at national level, rates ,bylaws, planning consents ,school crossings ,football parks, graffiti, drainage ,infill housing, alcohol consumption in the city ,security cameras etc etc thats what effects me more in my day to day life more than say Winston Peters bickering with banana drama about Fiji or whether the parliamentary rugby team should even exist!
Anyway theres only a few days left before the poll closes so get these votes in and if there are any candidates left out there that want to throw them selfs at the feet of the mighty political juggernaut that is the  YF  and beg for votes  lets hear ya!!

Could be worth a couple of votes anyway
