So the dates are planned as July 17, 19 and 21.

Anyone know anything else? Cities and opponent?

I guess it will all be announced in good time but as I am in Beijing I am very keen to know!

Bumping this back up as I presume we will have something to talk about on this next week.

Here's an excuse for the bump - some CSL info with a list of teams, presume we'd be playing two if not three CSL teams: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Super_League

P.S. A bit of a heat wave in Northern China at the moment, it's more than 35 degrees in Beijing each day so conditions might be slightly different from Queenstown and Christchurch...

I think Tony or Ricki said they were playing a team (or teams) that Melbourne recently played? I can't be sure I heard the correctly though.

China is the home of pirated cable/digital television.

One of the Melbourne games (against Guangzhou) was listed on iraqgoals but was then not shown.

If any of the TV stations here broadcast them then they will be viewable on iraqgoals or TVU player etc, however I doubt they will be, previous friendlies haven't been.

P.S. The other game Melbourne played was against Tianjin, who had earlier disgraced temselves with absurd falling over tactices against CCM in the last group match day of the AFC Champions League.

According the the article on the Mainland game the fixtures are:

v Tianjin Teda - July 18
v Guangzhou - July 21

These are the same two teams that Melbourne played, and CCM played Tianjin in the Champions League.

Any idea where they'll be played? If they are in the club's home stadiums then they are 3 hours flight apart. Would have been easier to get two teams near Beijing

I would guess they would be at the teams usual home grounds, I hope to find out as I will go to the Tianjin one.

Just as easy to fly TJ to GZ on a domestic flight as travel between any other two cities.

There is a video clip on 442 that suggests the Melbourne vs Tianjin Teda game was shown live on Tianjin TV, so look for feeds from Tianjin TV on the day I guess.

FYI the Tianjin game starts at 5pm local, which should be 9pm NZT.

Thumbs up for the Phoenix admin staff who answered my enquiry posted via their website contact form almost immediately. .

Hey SC03

Do you know if it is possible to get football strips of the China national team (in kids and adult sizes) over in Beijing?  Haven't seen any on any usual football strip web sites but then again Zhongguo isn't the powerhouse of world or Asian football either.

Well, wasn't going to ask that but if that's an option....

The only problem with pirating the national football strip is that there has to be a demand.  I was hoping that after their sh!te performance in the 2002 WC there'd be a sale of cheap football strips. No such luck, only more shirts of Korea and Japan at usual rates.

Very few people here would be seen wearing a Chinese national team shirt as the team is a national embarrasement. There are Beijing Guo'an shirts on sale here so I can have a look next time I go past the store in question, even if not I imagine it would not be hard to find pirated ones.

Thanks for that.  Don't worry - was just wondering.

Looks like the Chinese fans are similar to most Wgtn supporters (fair weather). I've made a habit of wearing my Spurs or Toon shirts on casual Fridays - despite the laughing stock of the EPL that they were for half (Spurs) or all (Toon) of last season.  Figured it was a nice but futile gesture of support. Likewise with my Phoenix scarf (v useful in this weather) - but since I'm in home territory its not quite as Quixotic (a few other mad souls around town also sporting the colours).

Having read the article about Manny Muscat could somebody please clarify how a pre-season schedule is put together.  I just can't understand how a long trip to China is meant to benefit the team, when so many players have been around the world and back again already.  I know the tour was cancelled last year but we seem to be determined to run everyone into the ground.  Our pre-season was blamed for our poor start to the league last year.

Its only 11-12 hours and not that many time zones so recovery time will be small.

...and besides that its the opportunity for admin, management and the players to ensure they have all their systems up and running, so they're organised while they're on the road...a "dry run" for the real thing starting in 4 weeks time.

Dont think the game would be on any Tv broadcast anyway, China Super League is having the break @ moment so the game would be like internal training game (like allow 200 subs in the game), Its great for Nix cz if you keep running in 35 degree @ pre season, ur physical fitness  backup would be much more effective rather than running in QTown then.

This makes me think it is:

"Herbert is hoping to put the finishing touches on what has been a disjointed pre-season when the team leaves tomorrow for China, a trip paid for by a match promoter, who will recuperate costs through gate takings and television rights."

So may be possible to see these yet! Great. Anyone on here monitoring Chinese sites where we might see streaming or live cast?

5pm local time according to the email I got from the Phoenix, which would mean 10pm NZ time. That is for the Tianjin match on Saturday.

Heard on the radio it's a curtain raiser to the NT vs Palestine, hence there would be some telly... but how the hell can we see it?

Looking forward to seeing Cleberson up front
