I know Hooper will be on big bucks, maybe Davila is a secret marquee?

I'm told it is illegal to force people to take holidays during the pandemic.

But it may not be if they volunteer

Hence why it's "ask".

The statement is a bit ambiguous. The way I read it, Is the nix current squad is the most expensive squad the nix have ever had. Which sounds about right with Hopper as marquee.

If I'm cynical, less to pay out if they have to shut up shop.

But I hope it's not that. There's not much money guaranteed to come into the club any time soon.

I don't know if it's cynical as much as it's one of the first things many businesses have done – reduced their annual leave liability.

Thought companies wernt meant to ask employees to take leave if they were claiming from the government.

There is nothing in the conditions about not asking employees to take annual (that is, fully paid) leave: https://www.employment.govt.nz/leave-and-holidays/other-types-of-leave/coronavirus-workplace/wage-subsidy/.

Because leave is a debt on the balance sheet so it makes the books look better. More practically, if they use their leave now then the Phoenix are free to play the players until the end of their contracts without having to pay the unused holliday pay if the league restarts.

It's the same reason businesses don't like it if you let your leave build up over a couple of years, it's recorded in the accounts as a liability.

ok but if asked to do that you would expect the employer not to claim them  Hope its checked I'm aware of people who have had to use all there leave and sick pay before getting it. Yes there employer has claimed it all. Sadly think there are some shady things going on.

Nix is effectively similar to a small-medium business (20-30 office employees), however unique in that it's not a profitable model and only survives due to the philanthropic generosity of the Welnix owners. Welnix will be bleeding cash more than ever at the moment. That will turn to haemorrhaging if Fox hold back on their next payment due tomorrow.

You'd think/hope that like a lot of well run small family type firms, there is a good team spirit, people enjoy coming into work, and folks like their job. Obviously a high number of the staff (though I'm sure not all) would bond over a love of football.

If you worked in marketing, accounts payable, are the office cleaner or whoever and had a love of football it could be your dream job, at NZ's only pro football club. Didn't a few of current or past staff, start out there working as volunteers just because they loved football? Many people might give their right big toe, to work at the Nix.

Also you would think a lot of the Nix staff normally take their leave over the next few months, being the off season. Nix's regular season was due to finish April 24th. When the A League resumes, it could be that 2019/2020 season is completed and 2020/2021 season starts immediately afterwards, ie an elongated stretch when taking annual leave could be tricky for certain roles at the club.

So if you are the type of employee that's going to "grizzle" about being asked to take your annual leave over the next few weeks, or spend hours reading through leave policies etc, you are I would suggest at the wrong employer.

Anyone know if Matti Steinman is still in Wellington?

https://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/news/120992657/auf-wiedersehen-jet-lufthansa-a380s-stunning-sky-tower-flyby

Surely if Nix don't plan to offer him another contract, they have now let him to return to Germany.

I wouldn't blame him if he did want to get on those flights to Germany. At least we've got quality players in Rufer and Devlin to fill his role.

The problem is replacing Davila and Hooper. Not that im convinced we are going to have to worry about it any time soon.

These were German Government sponsored flights for the thousands of German tourists still stranded around the world.  If Welnix wanted to cut Steiny loose without any money to live on they would have said so early enough.  One would hope.

Davila is contracted for next season, so is likely coming back once a) this is over and b) he doesn't have a newborn in a foreign country. If his wife hadn't headed over prior to this he'd probably still be here and obviously with the massive assumption that the A-League will be recognisable when it restarts.

Can't see a return for Hooper though.

Love your optimism but as I said I cant see it starting anytime soon or if it does our participation will depend on a number of factors. Even with a contract  not sure I would be keen on coming back to play to be locked down in Aussie. Because really cant see our borders being opened any time soon. If they are then you will be quarantined upon arrival. Which would necessitate the Nix being based in Aussie.

Really hope im wrong but if you read between the lines on whats being said by various people we arnt opening up any time soon.

For what it's worth, after seeing this, I asked the club today whether Matti was still in Wellington, given the last of these flights took place earlier this week and that they had made a point last Friday of saying only two players weren't in New Zealand or Australia.

Make of it what you will, but the club's response was "No comment".

The club's Head of Fan Engagement & Media, who is the point of contact for all media requests and questions. If it's not information he had readily available, you would expect his first port of call would be either David Dome or Shaun Gill.

Don't NZ privacy laws prohibit them from releasing any information on staff, contractors, etc without prior consent to the related subject question. Any employers on here?  I would expect the contract to allow for football related releases only. My opinion

Probably some truth in what you say, esp since if Steinman has now left for Germany, you could almost surmise that come end of May, his employment at the Phoenix has finished. That's given that it is going to very difficult to return to NZ in the near future for anyone, incl Senor Davila.

Hopefully next week on April 22nd, the FFA give an update on what are their proposed plans for a likely A League start. Also what is happening re payments from Fox. Then after that the Nix should be a a bit more forthcoming with intel. But I guess in reality any announcement on players being released etc could be left until early June.

Couldn't blame the Nix if they negotiated a deal to reduce wages for Hopper and Steinmann if they headed home. Kind of works both ways in the current environment. There is not going to be any A league for a while at least and when that does happen both these players will be out of contract. Hopefully that agreement (if any) keeps the door open for new contract negotiations when things are clearer about when football might happen again.

Different story for Davilla who is on a two year contract.

How is it not football related? It is a follow up to a claim David Dome made in his email to members last Friday, that they only had two players not in New Zealand or Australia, which would allow them to get back into action speedily if the 2019-20 season resumed.

I note Fifa has declared (for what it's worth, lawyers might – and probably will – disagree) that all contracts for the current season are to be extended until the season ends.

I see it as employment related or personal details.  But I'm a mechanic.

(social media has located many players in the Wgtn area)

Only examples I can give is : 1- Customer takes his bike in for Warrant. It passes.  Garage can only use his data to remind him that the bike is due for the WOF to be renewed on x date. Unless he signs up to accept contact re unrelated offers.  2 - Owner has bike serviced and some repairs done at garage.  Six months later he sells the bike. The new owner rings up and asks for the service history. Garage can't supply without authorisation from the owner who had the work done.  3 -Job seeker writes CV and list of past employment but does not supply an authority to contact references. Prospective employer can't ring references.  I got a phone call re a CV, from a prospective employer. The applicant had worked under me for 2 years but the firm I worked for was listed in employment history but not as a reference. Employer rang me to see if I could comment. All I could say is - their may be a reason he has not used his last employer as a reference. (All I got was I understand)

Had a look using Wiki. Prone to error no doubt, but just compared 2018-2019 squad verus 2019-2020 squad. Transfer In & Out.

All of the players on one years deals who left - didn't technically stay a full calendar year (12 months).

Eg Mandi signed 12 October 2018. Released 13 May 2019.

All players were released in either May or June.  Except Nicholls & Way who were released earlier.

Release dates otherwise start just before the 2019 A League GF (19th May 2019) - so maybe players can start to be released from a FFA/PFA mandated time, near normal season end.
