Ok, I sort of get you.  In any event, I personally think the number 7 is less important than looking at the number of changes we end up with to the starting XI.

I think we need 2 changes to the back 4 (CB and a FB - although that could be solved possibly by moving Manny back there (his midfield days are over for me), probably two new central midfielders plus Hernandez.

If was being completely ruthless I'd maybe look at shifting on Manny because of our guys on contract he's probably the one other people would be interested and I'm not convinced he's that good.

My God I'm starting to agree a lot with you, this is getting scary.

if you think that about Manny you can just blimmin well, blimmin....!!! (at right back that is...)

Was talk about the Jets being interested.

I would like to keep Leo but it comes down to money. For what he will be currently on, I don't think he is value for money. He would need to take a pay cut.

A BIG pay cut at that if he is on any like the rumoured $250k !

Lets just play this out a little for the sake of offseason boredom

Lets say that we agree that Leo is on about the $250k he is rumoured.

Now considering this year, he was one of our better performed players in comparison to the rest of the squad, was moved to an unfamiliar position and made a decent fist of it and definitely performed better than he did last year. You take all of that, and we are going to give him a massive pay cut? A paycut they may well put him well below what others are on whom have performed worse?

Food for thought?

As an aside, if my boss tried that shit on me, I'd tell him where to go.

If I was Leo I would seriously look at China. I'm sure he could command $400,000 a season over there and pick up a two or three year contract

Leo is a business man and if he was smart, he would have talked to Ivan and Killen about what they got when Ivan was there and what Chris gets now.

Certainly food for thought but is it just  a symptom of professional sport and unless all contracts are renewed at the same time always likely to occur.
A players form is probably on the whole like a Bell Curve. Leo is definitely passed the peak of the Bell Curve on on the slide down the otherside. This year he has stemmed the flow somewhat with a move to plugging a gap which he did okay in. The move back to midfield made him look refreshed, but he was no better in midfield than he was the year before. Regrettably time has done to him what it has done for everyone else (other than Daniel McBreen!!) and caught up with him and slowed him down.

People have talked of a paycut back to around the $100k mark or even less. He is probably worth more than that and he could probably get more in China and that is a choice he will have to make.

Very similar to what happens in The NRL, thinking back to the likes of Stacey Jones and even Wally Lewis. Basically yes we would like to keep you, but not quite as much as we did a couple of years ago!

Yes, it would suck for Leo but the other worse performing players contracts are not up for renewal. Not saying put him on a minimum contract but put him on one that more reflects what he adds to the side. If he feels that isn't good enough, he does have offers he can look into instead. The club won't fall apart if he decides to leave.

But I would like him to stay.

Cash in while he can. He doesn't have many years left so follow the money.

Unfortunatley for him, professional players at his level do not earn enough in their playing career to retire nice and early so he needs to look after number 1.

Not sure the Nix need him that much as I personally believe he offeres very little attacking threat anymore. Seems unable to take on a beat a man and his crossing is generally shite. Not great qualities in a wide player.

Doubt if Leo is gonna go to China. He is getting married this weekend, and his missus loves Wellington. He definitely wants to stay. Im sure if it came down to it, he would take a cut to stay (within reason of course). He is far too loyal to this club (and city)

Have you looked at the salary cap?

He'll be re-signed on a lower wage I'd say.

Sounds like they only offered renewals to players but at a significantly lower salary than they were on.

Good news as its one year with the option for a second

yeah not overly unhappy with that, he'll be at RM too, which he seemed happier with - now that manny is planning to go back to RB.

Jimmy DOWNEY - has to go - totally useless
Corey GAMEIRO - going - would like him to stay but he has plans of greater teams
Ian HOGG - either him or locky I suppose
Tony LOCHHEAD - as above
Lucas PANTELIS - gotta go, injury prone and been totally a waste
Dani SANCHEZ (f) - would like him to nstay but with Hernadez coming I can't see it happening
Alex SMITH (f) - should go - doesn't really command a starting spot and therefore wastes an import place.

Queenslander 3x a year.

i think both left backs should stay need a back up tony lochhead getting older and will be more prone to injury

God the Phoenix facebook page makes me want to kill myself. So many pricks that clearly don't watch the games or know shit. "Leo Bertos signs new contract". Comments: "Omg he's shit!", "WTF!", "Now let's re-sign Lochhead and go for the spoon!". Fuck these people are so frustrating and ignorant!

Who's favour is the one year extension in? Depends on cost and whether potential coaches were consulted. I don't really want to see players being offered contracts until the new coach is appointed.

I would imagine that by now the board have spoken to a number of candidates, and have a fairly clear idea of who they want and what that person wants (in terms of players and squad make-up).

Personally I'm happy about this. He was one of our better players this year (though there wasn't much competition). I assume the +1 is a club option (no Totori clause) which would make sense with a new coach on the way.

Good point.

Glad to see Leo re-sign, not sure there were many Aus/NZ options better. I would think the +1 would be performance related so he knows what he has to achieve to get another season.
