NZ players wise I'm sure Lindsay and Boxall wouldve joined Lochhead had they not a year to go on their contracts...

Does anyone have a list of the current contracted players so we can see what likely positions are going to have to be filled.

CONTRACT EXPIRES END OF SEASON 2013/14:
#2) Manny Muscat
#4) Michael Boxall
#7) Leo Bertos
#8) Paul Ifill (Fgn)
#9) Benjamin Totori (Fgn)
#10) Stein Huysegems (Fgn)
#15) Cameron Lindsay (u21)
#17) Vince Lia

CONTRACT EXPIRES END OF SEASON 2014/15:
#11) Jeremy Brockie
#12) Tyler Boyd (u21)
#16) Louis Fenton (u21)
#18) Ben Sigmund
#20 Glen Moss (gk)
#22) Andrew Durante (c)
#??) Carlos Hernandez (Fgn)

[Edit: I put u20, rather than u21]

What it does demonstrate is that Merrick is not afraid to ruffle a few feathers in order to implement change. Discarding a foundation kiwi who did not deliver the last 3 seasons sends a clear message to the rest of the squadp>

Agree on Lindsay. Boxall can play so I'm not so sure. I guess though when you look at the decision he just made on Lochhead...

I def think Boxall would take in the A League while Lindsay falls into the Musa box of someone I would've liked to have seen more of. Will next season be that? I doubt it.

Lochhead stopped getting forward thus he stopped being a wing back.

He probably would've fallen over and required another knee reconstruction

Good luck to both Dani and Lochhead. It never really worked out for Dani - he started off great but never really hit those heights again. I think we can do better with our import spot.

Lochhead has been a great servant for both Wellington and NZ over the years - deserves the respect of everyone; has always been a top professional. Quite often the designated scapegoat for poor team performances.

Lochhead is, without question, still the best left-back in NZ at the present time so the decision does seem a little strange. However, Ernie probably thinks that with a younger player like Rowe he has more possibility of getting something more out of him and moulding him into the left back he wants.

Why do the mods loving having like 3 threads to discuss everything. Who wants to look through 37 pages to find where discussion on a new topic starts?

May as well disable the 'New Topic' button...

When he was hitting the overlap and banging in the good crosses Lochy was excellent - its pace he was lacking

pace is what we need this season imo

Not unless you come to the forums every day.
How do i know which page to go to see the talk on the player releases, if I came here tomorrow?

That article is literally a cut and paste of comments on this forum. No quotes from anyone, no sources... That's not to say that there is no truth to it as well.

2nd Best has said that he is certain Rowe has been signed. When you look how both Rowe and Hogg did on Tuesday (not great), and coupled with EM saying we have too many older players, the picture is not the clearest. Idon't believe Rowe/Hogg are better at the moment but that can change over a season.

Personally, I'd offer Tony a 1 year deal. Tell him clearly that he is has been a fantastic servant but he is not the future (which is obvious with age anyway) and this is not about nostalgia or a payment to reflect what he has done. Its about now and that he needs to fight for a starting spot against Rowe (assuming 2B is right). There is a chance he may not play but he is expected to train hard and push Rowe every step and use his experience to help Rowe develop. At the end if season, he won't be re-signed so its a 1 and done deal on reduced wages. Its then up to him if he wants to take it or not.

Ernie Merrick is coach. My argument is invalid.

In this case I think you've got a point. I don't do any modding, but I had to look around to find this discussion. It didn't immediately occur to me that it would be in this thread.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I wish Lochead luck. There is a lack of LB in the league so it is possible another club may pick him up.

Hopefully they do, otherwise his spot for the WC if we qualify is going to be that much harder to hold on to.

Not worried on any of the others going. Now we have the fun of waiting for the new signings.

Sad for Tony and Dani - but super positive for the rest of the natural world.

It was coming sad to see him go but he had some really bad peformances as well as some great ones last season. Smith thought he might have done better but two seasons and nothing much happened ( was he tim browns replacement? ) and sanchez i thought he did ok but if merrick can get a good replacement then good on him

Lockhead has never been the same player since his "trail ''at Sunderland  a few years back.....But has done well for us in the early days,  All the best to him.

At least we can all stop mis-spelling his name now.

wasn't his 'trail' at Middlesborough? I think there was confusion cause Roy Keane was out with the ABs, on the same course as RH and coached Sunderland around the same time.

Middlesbro, not Sunderland.

Its always hard to judge why players fall away, especially when you can't blame it on injuries etc or age as he still isn't that old.

I blame the lack of a midfield, with that gone, he couldn't push too high otherwise we'd be caught out on the counter and defensively we were often chasing shadows because we couldn't retain posession (again no midfield) and were simply surviving.

In short all our problems last year stem from a lack of a midfield. With Smith and Dani gone and Hernandez coming in, this will hopefully change, assuming we get one more decent mid to help transition.

In short I blame our midfield for everything.

Middlesborough, Sunderland. Meh - same thing.

Never let the facts get in the way of a bad post :>)...and Boro didnt sign him cos he was no better than the rubbish left backs we had then anyway.

In the immediate term you'd hope he  would be looking to the VPL for winter. Otherwise he will have no football before WC playoffs etc

I am not sure we can blame midfield for Tony L.'s departure. Ernie obviously thought that LB needed more attention, and I would not be surprised if he looked at bringing in someone else than Rowe or Hogg into the position. However, I will hold back my opinion until I see Ernie's recruitment decisions for the midfield.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

You never know - ACFC might need an experienced LB for the Club World Cup - stranger things have happened. I think Lochhead would be good in the ASBP and I hope he gets picked up. He could also be a good fit for the Australian state leagues. At 31 he probably has a couple of seasons left, but then look at Ivan Vicelich.

His A-League options would be limited to Sydney. Can't see him heading back to the US.
