Why are we talking about pushing our players into coaching roles? Why do we not just hire legitimate coaches who specialise in that. Granted they are our players and we have attachments to them but pushing our ex players who have no coaching experience is very risky

Greenie has Level 2 coaching badge and is working towards level 3 and given he has stated he would like to stay long term in a coaching role, probably a natural progression for him. Not sure about Warner though.

A number of players tend to get coaching certs, so it's natural progression. We know Greenacre is looking at moving into coaching.

Not sure who we'd get as goalkeeper coach, but I think we need to have two solid goalkeepers, and I am just wondering if Paston is one of them.Ard Righ2011-11-05 01:22:11

After last night, I wonder if Warner is one of them too.

Looking at the squad, we have a chance to get some new blood in with so many off contract. Big question we face, is there the talent available to do that.

I wouldn't be surprised if Warner is the GK coach next season, so we will need another keeper. Paston would be a good option for the bench. Moss is off contract after this season, maybe make a play to get him back?

Going off the list on the Sydney FC forums, I think we should have a look at James Brown and Tommy Amphlett.

Brockie is also off contract, if Newcastle doesn't re-sign him, I cannot see another aussie team picking him up, so could land on our door step.

Warner goal keeper coach, could be wrong but where does him coaching come from, he has got badges??

James Brown would get picked up by other teams and Amphlett seems to be all pace?

Jeremy Brockie yes, he offers more then Leo so yes!!

Surely Brockie on current form would have several teams interested ?

But doesn't he and Ricki have beef? Brockie was the All Whites best player in the Honduras game in Auckland and his current form suggests he would be a very ideal pickup.

I think it is fair to say in the past 12 months he has had it all over bertos

of the current crop off contract I would take ifill, manny, sanchez and Lia but the rest frankly need to prove themselves.

Auckland will rise once more

ifill in negotitations. Wonder if they need to put some sort of appearances clause into his contract

over 14 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I hope we do make the offer Ifill needs to hear, shouldn't be too tough he's said he loves it here, his family is settled - give him what he wants, get him into the coaching and let him retire here a hero!

Thought we should have a place on the forum where we can keep track of current contract expiries for Nix players. This seemed an appropriate place:

EXPIRES END OF 2011/12:

Alex SMITH (f)*

Manny MUSCAT
Nick WARD ?
Mark PASTON
Tony WARNER (f)
Tony LOCHHEAD
Chris GREENACRE (f)
Vince LIA
DANIEL
Dani SANCHEZ (f)
Cameron LINDSAY (u21)
Brent GRIFFITHS (u21)
Niko TSATTALIOS (u21)

EXPIRES END OF 2012/13:

Tim BROWN
Leo BERTOS
Lucas PANTELIS
Mirjan PAVLOVIC
Ben SigmUnd
Jimmy DOWNEY

EXPIRES END OF 2013/14:

Paul IFILL (f)

EXPIRES END OF 2014/15:

Andrew DURANTE

* Smith is injury cover for Pantelis so technically not contracted to the end of the season.

Great news to hear manny is close to re-signing as well as Sanchez.

The rest on that list look like they will either have no other preference, or I wouldnt mind them going.

Think Lochhead, Paston & Daniel will be onboard again, cant see them going anywhere else.

Think Lia and Ward's futures may be a little less easy to predict, would have them, but dont mind if they can find better options, they arent as key- however both are younger than the majority of the squad so could be nice.

And then there is greeny and warner who both could hang up the boots(gloves) if they want, so we will have to wait and see what happens.

Daniel has a new lease of life this season. Would like to see him retained. Lochhead also is an important cog in our machine - hard to find decent left backs.

Can't see Warner staying on as the foreign quota reduces to 4 next season.

When I started the thread, I wouldn't have re-signed Daniel. It seemed a bit of a waste signing players to be squad players. Since then, his performances have been impressive. If he keeps them up, we should keep him for at least another season.

I agree
Don't think his body handles playing every week as well as it used to but he can still play, provides great assists, is local now (to us and not Aussies? as a Kiwi?)probably doesn't cost that much either.
Fan favorite and all that, kids love him.
I'd keep him on even if he gets pushed out of the match day squad he's a great squad player.

He has been at the heart of our creative pressure for the last month, with goals, chances and A LOT of assists. Daniel is playing his heart out.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Phoenix fans. We have to win them over one fan at a time.

Yeah completely agree with the Daniel sentiment, I thought we had to be a bit more ambitious and drop guys like him who just warm the bench, but he is doing great, experienced and reliable, gotta keep him on for sure

about 14 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I would not call it a new lease of life, it's just that he's actually playing. When given a run, Daniel tends to make an impact.

Muscat, Ward, Pasty, Lochhead, Daniel, Sanchez definately. Smith maybe, would prefer a striker TBH.

Lindsay is the player who needs the reserves to get up and running more than anyone.

Totally agree, people tend to forget Daniel is a player that builds into a rhythm by playing....

Hope to see Manny and Sanchez retained.

Next year would like to see Ifill, Sanchez, Smith + new Gun striker as imports. With greenacre/warner dropping off into coaching/wherever lol.

I wonder what will happen to Mark Paston. Do we sign him for another year?

To be honest for nix to continue at a high std we should be able to retain 6 overseas players or we will become an ozzy team. Keep warner and greenacre as players. Nz can not develop players at the same rate as is available to an ozzy team.

Why not?

With one team, a population of 4 million, and our youth teams doing better than Australian ones there is no reason we shouldn't be developing better than the Australian sides.  It's one of the sad indictments on the NZ sides in Aus (and NZF) that they have failed to do this.

You are rignt why not. But we have not supported the development of pllayers correctly for toomany years. How we fix it is not     for u$ but NZF.

I've been thinking along the same lines. The rest of the A league is tied up with their identity being around one city or area. At the mo we are the only team, a pretty impressive one at that, sole representative of the A league for New Zealand.

Sort out a reserve and also a youth team and add the unique sporting nature of NZ and you are on to a winner.

Pretty clear that Muscat and Sanchez are our main priorities at this stage.

Going to be hard for NZ players to be taken by Australian clubs as they would take up one of the foreign slots?

For me Warner is a guy to go - not because he is good or no good - as we shouldn't really be using a foreign slot on a keeper. Greenie (as a player) I am not fully sure about either as he may call it a day soon.

I dont think ozzy payers take os spots so kiwis in oz dont appear on lists i have seen as os players Ui. MaYyouy be wrong.

Yes kiwis do take foreign spots but many of the kiwis playing in the A-League hold Aussie passports: (Smeltz, Moss).

McGlinchey and Brockie would be foreigners though.

about 14 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Thanks for clearing that up. Now I understand why some do not appear in list and brockie looking for ozzzy citizen ship.
about 14 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
So the Oz players in nix take overseas spots.

No, for the Nix Australians and Kiwis are considered local players. But all the other A-League teams kiwis are import spots.
