Contracted Players - Return of the Long Pins
I'm just worried that we aren't looking for any players other than kids...
Also, just to give a bit of context to my stand point on this - I think providing a pathway for NZ talent is a key job of the Phoenix. Hell, I founded the bloody scholarship. So I'm all for youth development. But the squad has to be competitive, it's a poor cop out to say "yeah but these players we signed will be good in three or four years..." Sure, what happens until then?
It's also fair to reiterate what Iffs said on the pod last night, which is that we've had an unprecedented string of injuries this season which has forced us to rely on the kids more than we had planned to.
That would hold a lot of water, but for the fact that when we were backs to the wall we picked up Justin Gulley and Hamish Watson instead of seasoned pros.
Could be wrong, but weren't these after most of the transfer windows were closed? Complicates recruitment significantly.
Also, I think that the FFA closed the loophole and injury replacement players cannot be paid more than the player they are replacing.
You think Watson was on the same sort of money as Iffs?
As for filling the squad with seasoned pros, you get what you pay for and we don't spend much on squad players. The likes of Ward, Alex Smith, Macallister, Diego, Cernak, Pavlovic & Hearfield could all do jobs as squad filler but they are not gonna come here for minimum wages.
So how much scope would there be for the Phoenix to create a "Youth" or "B" team and field it in the ASBP - quite distinct from TW? ie. they train as part of the Phoenix organisation but compete in a different competition. There would of course be the proverbial can of worms with regard to the two different FIFA regions when it came to promoting from the youth team to the senior squad but is it a viable solution?

Hamish Watson is still here, wearing Phoenix colours. Saw him in his training gear at Countdown Newtown .
ive got a song that wont take long, Adelaide are rubbish.. the second verse is same as the first.. ADELAIDE ARE RUBBISH

Of course, just after we signed him on that 2 year contract Ernie stopped picking him. Bizarre.

Doesn't he become a kiwi in the 2nd year of his deal?
Makes it a little less of a ridiculous signing imo.
Allegedly

I don't see any issues with a player going to play in local games in between the end of season and when preseason training kicks off.
I was surprised Krishna got a 2 year deal up front. Would be interested to know if Ernie was driving the decision or not.
I think our devastating run of injuries was worth about 3 places in the table. I saw enough in Krishna to think that he will start next year. It was basically a choice between him and an ageing waffles.
Having the spot free for a mythical golden boot import striker may have given you hope, but I doubt it would have provided an actual return.
Krishna will be good for us next year, and even better value the year after when we have him as well as another import spot free.
As much as I hate seeing waffles go, it was possibly the right choice made.
Though I am a bit more on the fence about it than I sound.

Should clarify that I think Krishna could still be a very good player for us, but I don't understand the rush to sign him. I doubt he was going anywhere. And the 2 year contract does seem excessive considering he's only played a handful of pro games, is an import, doesn't have EU citizenship (so is less likely to get a pro contract in Europe) AND then was dropped for Brockie anyway. Even if that was Ernie giving Brockie a chance to impress it seems strange to me

Has not lived in the West for years. :)
If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid
Not convinced that Marco and Kosta 'carved up the ASBP'
They stood out. Marco was clearly the most talented player, if not the most effective, in that year's NZFC.
Are you just picking holes, or actually disagreeing?
Auckland will rise once more
Just going back to Kosta for a moment, wasn't the general consensus when he signed that we got the wrong brother? I could have a dodgy memory though.

Kids are fine as long as the balance is right. Based on existing squad, what's our balance? : 1) kids/developing (may or may not work out); 2) A league quality with time on their side; 3) proven but prob too old in next 2 yrs.

I agree, seen in relation to other A League players of his type Krishna has definite potential to succeed. He has the speed and mobility that Ernie clearly likes his frontline to have. Although as someone else mentioned I also found it frustrating that after ripping up Heart both he and Boyd barely figured for the rest of the season. Didn't seem to make sense.
Re Stein, I'm not sure. He's as slow as a wet week but apart from being a proven goalscorer he did a great job stepping in to play the Carlos role when he was injured. If Carlos decides to go too then suddenly we've lost our two best ball distributors.

NEW SIGNING: Ernie Merrick at the awards dinner tonight has confirmed that 20 year old Alejandro Gorrin has signed for the Wellington Phoenix. He is a 20 year old Spaniard who has been playing for the Sunderland U21 team. Everyone at the Phoenix welcomes Alejandro to Wellington.
So those imports..
I guess it could mean the end for Hernandez..

So now we need a striker, defensive midfielder and a defender all from either NZ or Australia... hmmm, sounds like we're gonna see more kids.

you are bloody pessimistric
Reira is now so important to us that we are just signing any Spanish players we can find to keep him company and ensure he doesn't get homesick?

I find the pace of this baffling unless there are moves in the background around Carlos. This is a very quick signing so my guess is that this boy was scouted a while back as a potential replacement for either Carlos (cause someone is over his bullshit), or the Phoenix were never serious about Stein (or he was a back up if Stein did not budge). If Carlos stays, it signals the end of Lia starting in the midfield. Also puts a squeeze on for Hicks and Ridenton but I am ok with that.
On the flip side, if this is a bollocks signing, then some really serious questions need to be asked around recruitment.
Does anyone have any skinny on this kid and why the Phoenix think this guy is HAL starting quality? (cause thats why he was signed, right?)
Grumpy old bastard alert
2 year deal, with option for a third.
I am skeptical about this.

"Head coach Ernie Merrick is hailing the transfer saying Gorrin has the potential to play in the EPL or the Championship division"
If this were true then why would he sign a 2+1 deal in the HAL???????????????
