[/quote] I wonder if he's regretting those comments about not leaving until we win the title. May end up retiring here.

It's easy to say those things when we were playing well. Tough times this season, no doubt, but i'm sure he'll give his all next season.

I thought we always had Roly next season, it was the one after that we were worried we would lose him. Or am I completely wrong?

We had him contracted

but you don't necessarily keep an unhappy player

I thought there was a fair bit of talk about him being marketable, and maybe unhappy with the league kicking chunks out of him every week

so I was pleased to hear via Ernie that Roly is committed to play here next season

The way I read this, the fact that Ernie has gone to the trouble of saying he has a commitment from Roly suggests there may have been some doubt

but, just my reading between the lines

I think you're right. There is always doubt surrounding players like Roly who are far and away the best in the team when the team is playing not-so-great.

If can't sign better players, there is no reason for Roly to stay and play for the wooden spoon.

With Kosta on board we may get the 3 other needed players, too.

It could be that Roly has an out in his contract, which he has chosen not to invoke.

Came across this on twitter. Chances created per 90min by assists (open play only)

What's the pink data point in the middle? Is it an average of all players?

Jeez, look how far away from the rest Mooy is. Crazy.

Also statistically Rolly isn't as we think he is, Barbarouses will be by far our best player, and people should stop moaning about weemac.

McG has created 51 chances this season according to OPTA, and delivered 186 crosses.
He was never a goal scorer, and his trouble this season has mostly been because that burden has been unfairly put on his diminutive shoulders.
With some better attacking talent alongside him, I think we'll see why he was worth re-signing next season.

It's interesting though that WeeMac is much better than A-Rod and Roly in creating chances but roughly the same as them for assists. That seems to indicate that maybe the quality of chances he creates aren't as good as the ones those other two create - more half-chances maybe?

Or A-Rod and Roly are more likely to be creating chances from broken play or a counter, when McG could be running at a parked bus (Ie the Adelaide game) some of the time?

fark- didn't even see Mooy 2016! Is there anyone else that has been so dominant? You'd think he should be playing in Europe or in a much tougher league with form like that...

Broich in his first year or two dominated everything.

Permalink Permalink

Also, there might be other players closer to Mooy, seeing as it's only comparing him to our mids + Kosta

Shows the importance of Broich - OK for assists but really shining in his own chances

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

This chart proves conclusively the Aaron Mooy started taking performance enhancing drugs about half way through 2015.

whats peoples thoughts on keeping watson.  although his attitude needs working on i think the guy has showed the potential that he could make it at least as a squad player.  3 goals in 4 games shows he can get into the right positions and score a goal.  he is also the type of striker we need being over 6 foot

Good cheap plan B. Give him a 1+1 deal, keep him on his toes.

3 in 4 or 3 in 3 because of his suspension.

Whats wrong with his attitude? Its hard to imagine Merrick giving him another crack if his attitude was pants!

Good Plan B. Will get worked out quickly, so definitely not a Plan A.

I am concerned about his touch, though. I've seen players with far better first touches at Sunday afternoon league level. That's something that is hard to coach at this stage of his career.

I am sure Ernie took him aside quietly and said "We do not kick the ball away in A-League, son, not when you're on a yellow and the score is a draw".  Attitude probably comes along with the type of a player he is, and can be / should be / managed to allow him to blossom.

I'm with Ernie.

We'd rather an average first touch who can score goals (Watson) for less, than a good first touch who can't score goals (Sarpong) for more. Notwithstanding there will be another starting goal scorer coming into the squad.

Keeping Watson is a no brainer.

Think you have got a mistake there, Sarpong has both a poor first touch and can't score goals.

Yep - Fornaroli, Berisha, Maclaren, Castro etc all have pretty good first touches!

However, when you look to the bench - guys like Simon and Santalab are common. I think Wattosauce can do that type of job.

Simon is a sometime starter for a club that's current marquee is on 1.4 million.

Watson will improve (like Krishna) the more he trains with the team because he will naturally have to lift to compete etc. He's still young and offers something going forward.

He should also be in the All White Power Rankings : )

I'm happy we've re-signed all those players.

Interesting the lengths of some contracts - 3 years for Fox, obviously the club like what they see. 1 year for Doyle though - young kiwi, developing in a role we've had problems filling for a while, I would have expected more?

Re Doyle only getting one year could be a function of him being a kiwi. I doubt he's going to be import quality so no risk of another club grabbing him at the end of the season. On the other hand if he has a shark season he can be offloaded easily. Contrast that with Fox who as an Aussie, could be a target for another club this time next year
