All due respect to the Yellow Fever faithful but not an impressive turnout for the opening game of the season. A new coach, two star imports and reasonable spring weather (by Wellington standards) should have attracted more than 8300 to the ground. Welnix will be concerned as it was below break-even. It's also not a good look to see acres of empty seats in such a big stadium.
Across the ditch the A League crowds are at record levels, so behind the scenes this must be an issue at the Phoenix. I suspect we could see more games played out of Wellington as either Christchurch or Auckland would probably have attracted twice the size crowds. Are the Wellington public becoming too jaded about the Phoenix, particularly after a wooden spoon season or is there simply not a big enough population base? Your truly loyal rump support is only about 5,000 - 6,000.
Another season of relatively low turnouts in Wellington and I wonder if there won't be a lot of pressure behind the scenes to turn it into the NZ Phoenix and play more games around the country, particularly Auckland.
