Look - with NZ Freestyle Football on beforehand - there is going to be a crowd of MILLIONS

millions?? ok, that should be interesting.......to be fair though, a little more visible marketing would be good. like the bus ads that are going around for the lions - "be part of the pride", we could have one that was a shared deal between Yellow Fever and the Nix, something like "Catch the fever, catch the Nix"

I'm seriously worrying about the crowd figures unless we start winning. Or at least putting on a half decent performance

Sunday is the day for a big performance, hate to say it but for the fan's this could well be the turning poin in the season, if the team fails to impress then I suspect we will find it really tough to draw the average Joe to the game.

They should push merchadise with a ticket, buy a season pass get a shirt 'free'.

Buy a scarf get a ticket free.

Its all $$ in the nix pocket, and people wearing merchandise is advertising.

They dont seem to be in the public eye as much this year, perhaps its something to do with Lions winning and Nix loosing......

agree about this being 'do-or-die' time potentially, I have no doubt that the yellow fever will remain at the ROF singing there hearts out every game... but we need a lot more people turning up than that to be succesful, and I think winning is the only way to do this

They need to advertise at the universities.. give out free tickets or something or hold mini competitions. Students love free stuff. They kind of already have the family demographic. They need to shift their focus and start making it attractive.

I just want a free ticket. :P

What about guarantee a win, Buy a ticket and watch the nix win, if we dont win present the ticket next game and turn up for free and so on until we get the 3 points

I can see where everyone is coming from in that a free ticket or a free scarf is attractive, but that costs alot too. Everything costs, sure, and bums on seats are good but the price iof a ticket is pretty low anyway. Who can't afford $20 for a ticket?????

To be honest fellas the problems not with winning, its not with the price of the ticket, its the lack of promotion. I haven't had any reminders building up to each week (except on here) that games are on. There are entire demographics working and I am seriously wondering whether their marketing manager has the budget to work with, or if his budget doesn't match his creativity, i.e. doesn't know how to work with a small budget!

Anyone know who the marketing manager is? I'd love to have a yarn with him or her and give them some ideas (yes i've got a degree and experience in this )

Forget the merch, you gotta get the "too cool for school" set. Find the Alpha Cool Dude, convince him that football is way cool, and then the rest will follow.

The TCFS set do NOT dig official merch. They also do NOT tend to dig rugby, which is where you lot come in.

Make it happen.

please $20.00 is nothing, most of the people who tell you they can't afford it, will be telling you with a smoke in their hand aoutside the pub, can't afford it whatever! Financially detrimental marketing is not the way forward, we as a club need punters to come and pay to be there, otherewise there will be no club to give free sh*t away!

Sweet, you'll be shouting all my mates to the next game then mr rich?

If its not a priority,it is a lot of money. That and travel to and from game, with drinks n food.

Football isnt the only source of entertainment in wellington, people only have a limited amount of money in their budget to spend,so have to prioritise. Not everyone can afford to go to the rugby AND football every week for example...so may go to one this week and the other the next. Or if the weather is sh*t they may prefer to spend their money on going to the movies instead.

Sure $20 is cheap, but to say everyone can afford it so its not an excuse is (im sorry) being a twat

Yopu've p[retty much made my point for me! all I said was who can't afford $20.00, the answer is those who don't want to......If the people want to come then its as accessable as it can be! Its about changing people's priorities and giving freebies isn't going to do that, you'll ahve ig crowds sure but make no money off the game and eventually fold! As for not being able to afford to go to both Ruigby and football - whats costing you more??? the lions game I'd expect! but then if your only a fan of a winning team and not a real supporter I'd be happier if you didn't show up!

I meant twat in the nicest possible way

I was more pointing out that its not just the money factor. Giving freebies might tip the scales in favour of people preferring to go to the football for the weekend...free kids = more affordable than other options for families = more turn up = more attendance and more money

So only 'real' supporters should turn up? Thats sh*t..im sorry...some people dont given the choice would rather spend their $20 watching the lions win every week with a bonus point, than wtch 4 goals get put past us...AND FAIR ENOUGH. Id be happy with anyone turning up to watch and support the phoenix, dont turn people away just because you dont consider them to be 'real supporters'.

Last year's Sunday games and crowds were;

Aug 26 vs Victory 14,421
Sept 9 vs Jets 11,478
Sept 30 vs Glory 10,127
Oct 21 vs Mariners 10,560

So far this season home crowds have been;

Aug 17 vs Roar 10,516
Aug 24 vs Victory 6,110

Discounting the Aug 26 2007 game (first game novelty factor) last season the average Sunday crowd was about 10,700

Discounting the game the night before the Galaxy game last season (free tickets given with Galaxy tickets) the average attendence for non Sunday games was 10,400 - the includes 14k for the last game of the season.

So the crowd for the Roar game this season was about average, the crowd for the Victory game was 2,400 below average but it was an absolute sh*t of a day.

Historically Sunday game crowds are not materially different to Friday or Saturday game crowds and, if anything, are a few hundred larger.

Kids free and other promotional ideas will help but, as many others have said, you want to see crowds of 12k +  again WIN, WIN and WIN again.

game on the 24th was in the most miserable weather when no sane person would be outside let alone at a footie game, and I thought the 6k was a good effort, considering there was no other reason to be out on a Sunday otherwise.

Exactly my point. As a student $20 is doable, I mean the season pass as a student was ridiculously cheap, we've gotta develop a culture of people wanting to watch football! Possibly more on field antics to get the crowds involved, the ball kids having a kick around at half time etc

Phoenix tickets are not always a financial priority. For most of us Feverites, then yes, it is a pretty high priority. But not always for the general punter - and it's the general punter the club primarily needs to market for, not the Feverite who'd plan on going anyway.

I totally agree with you Royal , lets hope he is still around for a few more seasons.
The only way to get a big walk up crowd is hoping that the weather is much better and a bit more marketing presence like a year ago.

All down to $$$. Billboards, buses etc all cost loads. Best way is to get the players in peoples faces as much as posible. Hit schools, malls, other big events. Poeple love to see the players and it's free to do.

bring 3 people along to the game- they will watch the game- the 'nix will play attractive winning football and then they will bring 3 people...

yeh I got called big time on this once as a student. I was complaining about ticket prices, and the guy I said that too turned around and said 'I watched you drink 5 beers over the counter here last night' and they only served stuff in bottles too...

so yeh...there is always creative student acounting you just gotta be prepared to take the 3 days of pasta and weetbix for the beers and the nix!
