Crowds and Marketing

Here's a chance for budding marketers to put your two cents worth in and perhaps give the marketing dept at the Phoenix some ideas on how to attract more people to the game this weekend (and the rest of the season).

This must be their (marketing dept) hardest game so far. Last year was run off the honeymoon factor and no expectations. This year the complete opposite.

How can the gurus draw more people to the game? I've seen absolutely nothing to encourage more people along to the game this weekend at all, outside of the usual advertising.
Even Rugby have done the "as many free kids as you like" thing again this weekend for the game against Waikato. The crowd-number spotters are going to be gutted if rugby get a big crowd for their game and the Nix get their smallest.

A bunch of people have said we need  a big crowd for several reason, to get the world cup play off for one, so what would you do to get people to roll up??

They could actually spnd some money on marketing like they did last year instead of the pittance they have put out there so far this year.

...oh, and make the weather good.

Do they try kids free? seems old hat, but it works. The crowd for the rugby last week may have 15,000 but half were kids. Hope for a win and wait for the flow-on effectRoyal2008-09-09 14:58:07

true News..just trying to get a few people worked up enough to come to the RoF.......maybe the kids free thing might work for the Nix as well as it is for the rugby

How about this, every adult who presents a ticket from the Lions game gets a discounted ticket, maybe even at concession rates given to students and elderly. Try and expose the game to some who mainly go to watch the rugby.

Also can always focus on football related activities, organisation such as clubs, schools and especially at indoor football venues (include twighlight with that). It may be a little late now, but could offer tickets to clubs and schools to give as part of awards i.e. player of the season gets his little trophy and 1 or2 tix to a specified 'Nix game and also the same for teams that win their indoor league.

Not sure if this is already done, but have a weekly ring in - radio sport and especially ZM. Have competitions to win tickets on ZM and radio sport all the time and maybe even tickets to win on a TV show, the fiance is entering some competition every week on private practice that requires txting in an answer that is revealed during the show, must be the right show and not the football show on Sky, needs to be more mainstream than that.

Get Daniel visiting schools again. Could easily also have a competition run at schools to make an ad for the 'Nix either print or video, try and incorporate it into the curriculum. Yes that's right incorporate the 'Nix in the curriculum . With prizes again.

Basically lots of competitions, this increases peoples interaction and participation with 'Nix and the brand rather than lots of passive advertising.

We have to face the facts here I think, the Phoenix need to win to draw crowds! The money has been spent, they done well in pre-season, they had their build up season last year, and the media do a good job of pointing these things out... The results now need to come, then the crowds will..

The lions (i hate to admit it) are winning and doing well, this is always going to be a huge pull factor...

The idea of a discount for both games on a double header is a good one but I feel that there are too many egos and hangups between the 2 codes to let that happen...

Th school visits are great  again something rugby does very well....hell right now even a buy one get one free might work

Family is the key, mum's control the pennies and things are tight, advertise it as family time and push the family factor and you can make the big bucks, that and stop this Sundays crap!!

I've got about a billion ideas floating around, who should I email them to?

demolish 20,000 or so of the RoF's seating so we look like a huge crowd and don't have to keep thinking of cunning plans
You know we belong together...

I agree.
There is only so much that the marketing can do. At the end of the day - the team needs to perform and win in order to draw crowds. People are not gonna come support a team thats lying bottom of the table.

Seriously, kids free, works every time.
Inviting a work mate is even better.
And the old favourite, you live in Wellington but you've never seen the Phoenix....

The kids free thing worked so well for the lions they are doing it this weekend and against Tasman in the final home round robin game (which should also be a shield defence), why? Because it works.
I wouldn't write off the idea of a joint promotion, would not be suprised at all to see it happen weekend of Tasman and Sydney game.
We also have the problem of game times, Sunday afternoon is a sh*t time for families full stop. Add to that the state of the economy and the fact is people have less money to spend and a lot of people at the moment would choose the Lions ahead of the Nix because they are winning and playing attractive football.

I think it has something to do with Sunday night games, I can understand trying to make it family time, but there should be more Friday and Saturday night games,

And if its going to be Sunday and so family oriented why soo late, most parents try and get ready kids ready for school etc sunday night, Sunday avo would be way better and you can make a day of it.

It seems Sunday night apeals to noone, probably half the reason why the Fever is not as loud as it used to be...

I think the NIx would have very little say in it, all would be directed by Fox i imagine. They probably have a permier game each weekend which is given the prime spot and they work from there. Also would depend on where perth are playing to i think

The Sunday games definetly suck the big one and it's a shame to see them hurting the crowds so bad.
As an out of towner I made the commitment at the begining of the season to get to as many Nix games as I could (cheap airfares only) the Sunday games are so late the they clash with the last of the cheap fares on sunday whenever any airline has a sale.

As such I'll only be seeing you all for the victory game on the 28th of Nov (hopefully the Sydney game on the 4th of Jan also)

What I'm getting at is that not only are the games being far too late on a Sunday affecting your local market but they are also having an effect on us tourists.

(a rather long post considering the tourist effect must be minimal at the best of times unless Beckham's involved)

I'm pretty sure it won't be long before we see the 'family free for kids day' thing employed by the Phoenix, I'd say mid season at the latest. Needs to be done and it's obviously working for the Lions.

Fuck this stupid game

Last year's Sunday games and crowds were;

Aug 26 vs Victory 14,421
Sept 9 vs Jets 11,478
Sept 30 vs Glory 10,127
Oct 21 vs Mariners 10,560

So far this season home crowds have been;

Aug 17 vs Roar 10,516
Aug 24 vs Victory 6,110

Discounting the Aug 26 2007 game (first game novelty factor) last season the average Sunday crowd was about 10,700

Discounting the game the night before the Galaxy game last season (free tickets given with Galaxy tickets) the average attendence for non Sunday games was 10,400 - the includes 14k for the last game of the season.

So the crowd for the Roar game this season was about average, the crowd for the Victory game was 2,400 below average but it was an absolute sh*t of a day.

Historically Sunday game crowds are not materially different to Friday or Saturday game crowds and, if anything, are a few hundred larger.

Kids free and other promotional ideas will help but, as many others have said, you want to see crowds of 12k +  again WIN, WIN and WIN again.

For starters, have a billboard outside the RoF advertising each Nix home game.  Thousands of motorists drive pass there.  For people not in the know don't know when the Nix game is on.  Sure, there's the Dompost & other small billboards, but to have a huge billboard outside the home ground is got to be a bonus.

The only billboard by the stadium is owned by rugby. They have Lions games on there now and when that's finished they'll start promoting the Hurricanes. It's taken year-round

Why don't we advertise?

Don't have to spend lots. I'm thinking emailing stuff viraly, little youtube videos, using existing networks like facbook.... slapping up little posters.

Think how much publicity the faked ford balloon ad got, that Ecko still free ad got. Or even just things like Mentos and Coke, will it blend, videos of Zidane post world cup...

I don't know if you think this is achievable, but doing something.

there seems to be very little advertisign done, except on sky which ios really sky pushing their own coverage, there doesn't seem to be a lot of game markerting, the occasional bus stop big, but no really hype building or anything like a 'canes or lions game - this needs to change.

Millwall had kid free and that seemed to work, another great way of getting the yoof interested is for the club to invite schools and maybe give all attending a promotional item of use, like a scarf or hat, then the brand becomes a walking advert.

All down to $$$. Billboards, buses etc all cost loads. Best way is to get the players in peoples faces as much as posible. Hit schools, malls, other big events. Poeple love to see the players and it's free to do.

You are quite right Win and things are different . having  been in the licensed industry for many years its that simple I see it all the time, whether it be the Hurricanes, The All Blacks, Warriors, the Phoenix is no different

People  in all sports love supporting a  team thats winning and  doing well. Fans in Wellington are particulary fickle, when  things are not going well they stop buying merchandise and stop going to games, unless your a true fan!!

Get results and its whole different ballgame

Last year the games were 4pm not 5pm and the weather was better. i know we cant do anything about the weather but that extra hour does make a big difference.

they should have planed the first few home games for friday or saturday nights to drive up the intrest, then played the sunday games once the weather was better and daylight savings had kicked in!

We got 10,500 to the Roar game on Aug 17 with a 5.00pm kick-off - historically that is about average for a Sunday.

Assuming the weather is OK the benchmark for the crowd this Sunday is, I suggest, around 10,500.

No disrespect but your dreaming.

If we play well and win this weekend then it would be realistic.

That game against Roar was the first of the season and one would hope for an above average attendance for the first game. And the times/weather have a big impact on crowds. The Mariners game on Oct 21 was a beautiful sunny, clear day. Could easily see the S. Island. The game, must have been on in the early arvo as I remember sitting in the sun all game. El**ch scored a cracker and we conceded THAT goal on full time.

Better weather/times would help crowd figures

I didn't say we'd get 10,500 - I said it was a benchmark i.e. that is about the average of all our Sunday games last year and was the crowd that turned up for the Roar game - so this is the number we should compare the attendance this weekend against to assess if the crowd was good, bad or ugly.
