Daniel: Necessity or Luxury?

Daniel could be the one of the best midfielders in the A-league but to get to that level he needs to learn to play 90 minutes not 30 minutes per game.

He is the face of the Nix and we all love his passion, commitment and skill.

No question we are a far better club and team with him than without him -  he just needs to become a complete player by fronting for the whole game not bits of it - think how much better a team we would be with a 90 minutes Daniel.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

guys, don't want to be rude, but please stick this in your f**king heads:Daniel is the best attacking midfielder in the A-League.

NZPower, it seems very few people would disagree with you (me included!).

Are you serious??????
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

some people clearly are not watching the same player most of us are! He's involved in everything he can be, the man is only one player out of 11 on the field.

It seems the only way Daniel could please some is if he juggled knives, ate fire, served fans beers all whilst running his 110% heart and soul out!

Daniel = Playing legend. (IMHO)

I think as the year progressed last season his work rate improved over time.

Maybe he slipped into a bad habit. Like last year though, Ricki will drop him to the bench and remind him he needs to work hard for the full 90.

With out having a second striker no offense to Kwasimodo we need to have skill full creative mid fielders creating opportunities. He is a necessity for that reason.

Daniel a luxury? It's the bad players who are a luxury.

Daniel's combination with Lochead last year was tremendous. Of the magic trio Daniel is the first of those three on my team sheet every time, prefer him to spend more time working the left side again.

Daniel had a bad game. Mainly due to the football we played, i.e outskilled in CM, which resulted in hoof ball, skipping Daniel totally.

1 bad game does not mean you are a luxury.

Just the start you better get prepared for plenty more of this type of thread,as it seems many on here wouldnt even be happy with the team if we were winning every week.

Daniel is class. It's the little touches that make him so good. If we didn't have him it would certainly be to the detriment of the team. Especially if he was playing in another A-League team.

Wasn't it Daniel that set up the goal?

How the hell can Daniel get involved in a game like against the Raw when he ends up getting sunburn on the roof of his mouth watching the ball being wellied over his head from the defenders.

Daniel consistently shines with the ball coming to him along the deck and players moving to recieve. A quick passing game suits his style of play. Interestingly Rickie said the Phoenix were better last week when they relaxed a bit and started to pass.

Every team need someone like Daniel.....they have the talent to create a chance out of nothing with sheer class. They only need to do it a couple of times a game and goal scoring chances will come. Watch Smeltz's goal again. Daniel recieved, turned, looked up and delivered an inch perfect pass, all in an instant.

Every other team coach in the A-League wil have plans to stop Daniel. He was the most fouled last year, he's heavily marked every game. Get off his back. Rather look at the style of play the whole team played. Daniel would be the first name on my team....every week.

I originally voted Luxury.

With the hindsight of now having watched the 4am replay this morning of game on SP I have to say I am happy to retract this.

Daniel was everywhere; his touch is fantastic and seems to anticipate in most circumstances whats going to happen and his positioning off of ball was superiour. Sure his discipline needs working on but thats a small price to pay

I absolutely say he is a necessity based on Sunday's performance. Sorry for doubting you Daniel.

Dodd on the other hand would be lucky to keep his place this week. Didn't know Ferrente was even playing until 25 minutes in both on Sunday and on replay - he needs to lift as well

I think any team needs someone who can create chances that catch the opposition off guard and the more I watch the goal from Sunday the more I enjoy it, the chip lob was gold.

On saying that, maybe a little more leeway needs to be given to a creative player like Daniel. If he ran his ring off and trying to tackle anything that moved and ran after every ball then I would suggest his attacking flair would quickly fall away. I would prefer he played the way he does and keep the flair on attack coming.

I think what's underlying this discussion is frustration that, apart from 10 or 15 minutes after we scored, our midfield was pretty comprehensively outplayed on Sunday and, because of that, we ended up playing some pretty ugly long ball kick and chase.

I'm sure we will do much better this weekend as the first game nerves will  be behind us, players who had an off game will get back to their normal high standard, Ricki will make the 1 or 2 selection "hard calls" that need to be made and the team will "fire".

Roll on Sunday !!

Can't really blame the fade away on Daniel, as mentioned before he's there to be the flair that stuffs the opposition up, players like Ferrante, Johnson/Brown  etc are there to support the flair guys and provide that stability - they let us down on Sunday, big time.

Johnson is a better DM than he's been given credit for. Daniel in front of him and Richard plays a good covering game. A real engine room type player.

I rest my case!

Watching the video makes me wish Felipe hadn't left to be honest, some of his interplay with Daniel in this is fantastic to watch. Hope he can strike up a similar relationship with Gao and Leo.
