Looking to get into the WAG game RR?

Only if these "quality options" are here to stay long-term.

We're all sick and tired of the "one night season stand" thing.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

If people took FM seriously then every team in the world would be full of US based players because the researchers there grossly inflate anyone who even looks at a football in the States.

We should use what the Children of God cult used to call "flirty fishing". Some lasses (or pretty lads?) should make sure our imports have incentive to stay.

It os not the quality of any import that we get that worries me tbh. It is quality across rest of the squad that concerns me.

They will find adequate imports.

Yes I get the distinct impression our major signing will be another Sarpong like punt. Just gotta hope to land on the right side of the coin this time.

Sign Jay Emmanual Thomas. QPR must be about to give him away and I reckon he could do a decent job at this level.

How do you get that impression?  The team have said the exact opposite

Actions speak louder than words. Also because very few top draw aussie players are available. But we will see, effectively it is always a calculated punt bringing someone not familiar with the A league down under unless they are really well known.

Scott Galloway - getting a current Olyroo who can fill a key spot (and cover others), with decent HAL experience is good start by the club (and yes, I know LI was the first signing, you know what I mean).

On trial with a Dutch club. Don't know how it's going, but I would imagine they have the best chance in signing him first

EDIT - Haha, scratch that! Glad to see him sign!!!

Yeah I rate this. Exactly the sort of player we need and have never been in for previously.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Burns was playing in the state league and didn't have 80 caps. Although Dura had A league experience with a championship team

I'm not sure if Nathan has ever played in the state leagues. We signed him after he was released from Incheon in Korea, after spending part of the previous season on loan at NUJ.

And Durante had just won the HAL and was the Joe Marston medal winner. Other signings like Jade North and McKain, also both capped Socceroos when signed.

can't think of another out and out full back since the signing of Jimmy Downey. Who really was a flop despite the amount of fanfare.

I have no idea where you got that from.

We picked up Burns from Newcastle Jets, he was on loan from a Korean team at the time, before that he'd played in Greece and had a couple of seasons with Adelaide united where he lit up the league.

He was one of Australias top talents but had never achieved his potential until he played for us.

He'd also played for Australia at all age levels and had multiple senior team caps.

^ This.

I don't understand people saying we never make this sort of signing. This is EXACTLY the sort of signing we have made constantly over the last few years. And in what upside down world did Jimmy fudgeing Downey arrive with 'fanfare'?

Young Aussie - Tick

Full-back but 'versatile' - Tick

Will likely be turfed out in a year for another young and promising Aussie full back  - Tick

He only has a one year contract and has made it clear that he wants to go to Europe.

This is a completely different signing to the others mentioned, he's been an a league full back for four years and started pretty much every game for an a league team last season. You can't compare that to someone hired from an amateur league.

Exactly. None of those other guys were established A League fullbacks when we signed them. That's a pretty massive difference

Congratulations on being the ONLY person I've seen online being negative about this signing! That's the Nix spirit.

Sorry Oska probably didnt  make it clear. Galloway is proven and tested at this level. All of the above except maybe Tratt were really unknowns, and thats ultimately why most of them still aren't here today.

Tratt was also an unknown, there's no need to sugar coat his signing. When we signed him he was just another young Aussie that we were going to try as one of our wide defenders.

He turned out to be much better than any of that, but Galloway is a much "bigger" signing than Tratt was at the time.

I watched pretty much every Victory game he played - a lot live - and he wasn't very good. I didn't watch as many CCM games, though - did he improve a lot?

I'm very happy we've made a signing, and we've made far worse, but people talking about this signing in the same breath as Burns and Durante is crazy.

The way I measure it is - are any other clubs disappointed they didn't sign him? Not really. Of course, doesn't mean he will bad. Doesn't mean anything. Just means that he still has a lot to prove.

I don't think it's a stretch to be a bit cautious about it considering the amount of young Aussie full-backs we've had.

None of those guys were memorable though, apart from Doyle and Tratt.

And none of them had serious A-League experience.

Downey was really fast.

Like, faster than Appiah or Krishna.

Caira. That is one player I totally forgot about despite making 11 appearances. Ernie's first signing perhaps?

Permalink Permalink

I think he is a good signing and indication that in signing Rado as his assistant was his first and potential best piece of business. In Doyle, if he can stay fit we have a decent LB and it appears we have a decent RB now as well.

If we can pick up a quality DM, things will begin to take shape. Good pressure on Durante to step up.

I wonder if we would look at Musa again. Can provide cover as a DM and as a CB.

a) By that logic, Maceo Rigters should have been the salvation of GCU.

b) Basing your reactions on what your opponents say is generally not healthy.
