He may be the best central defender we have, but that does not mean that he is up to the standard. If we all think he is up to standard, then maybe we should raise the stsndards and next season improve our league standings.
I can see how Ross A, as a former team mate and captain with A-League, and International experience can be less qualified than you to comment on Dodd's ability

Maybe I just happen to know a bit more about the game.

Erm, when the overall standard of the league gets raised?

Doddy's doing perfectly well in the league as it is right now.

Whats wrong with being a leader and not a sheep.
Raise your standards beyond average or in Dodds case , below average

Our defense was just as good as half these teams. just because they finished higher than us doesn't make their defenders better than ours.

We let in less goals than CCM and Sydney (they both got 32 Against and we got 31) and close to Melb with 27.  Defense was one of our strongest points this season and we were one of the hardest teams to break down excluding the reds.
Had we not taken the 3-0 and 6-1 beatings from the reds then our defensive record would be even more impressive.
And just because you're hating on Dodd, did you realise he wasn't playing in those two thrashings?

He even scored a goal this year!

I personally would prefer Dura and Siggy at the back but we can't just throw away Dodd. he's been class and if we can sign him we should.

So who are all these better players the other teams have? And who should we be signing instead of him? Maybe Fabio Cannavaro or something? That might raise the standard of the league aye.
But seriously auskiwi, who do you sugget and from where?
A youngster to make a risk on? or someone from out of the league??

We did take 3-0 and 6-1 beatings though. If onlys...
Dodd was playing or not doesn't matter. I didn't mention those 'results'.
I'm not "hating" Dodd, I don't "hate" anybody, just think we can do better than someone who for the most part looks like he's playing in gumboots and has poor on field awareness.
Dodd "has been class". LOL what class?
Cannavaro?? Now that is silly. You were going ok up till then.
I suggest we pull our fingers out and find someboby. I'm not a scout, but if I was payed to do so I sure would find better. All I want is better, and if you don't expect better you won't get it, unless by dumb luck, and I wouldn't rely on that. As for us scouting England for forwards, J.C. that place its probably the most scouted coutry in the world. Christ, can't we think outside the square?

If we were looking for the next 17yo wonder kid that might be the case, but what we need are some proven goalscorers who are playing at a standard comparable to the A-League and can walk in to the side and the lifestyle with no dramas or stresses.  That is more likely to work out of England (and Tony has stated clearly on here that they are not only looking at English players) than picking up some 18yo Pole or 26yo Ecuadorian who may well fall apart them moment they land here and leave us stranded (cue Newcastle last season).

Anyone could fall apart. Its a risky business.
That 18year old Pole or 26 Ecuadorian could just as easily be league winners for us.
What standard do you think is comparable?
Maybe
League one mid table Colchester United or soon to be relegated Cheltenham Town?
League two high flyers Brentford ,  mid table Notts County or GONE Luton Town?
Or Blue square Premier

There may have been a slight sarcastic tone when mentioning Cannavaro. Dodd is solid at the back and is an asset to the team. I'm not sure there is a place on the bench for a defender when we have McKain but with all the bookings and injuries this season, the defense switched and swapped well.
Sure he is not a free kick taker - or good delivering long balls. But I'd love some Justification as to why he is not worth one of the spots on the Nix??

I wouldn't select him in a starting line up personally - but if he wants to sign, then we gotta take him on. I doubt we could 'raise the standards' without taking a massive risk on someone who will probably be wanting more money and won't be proven at this level. Dodd fits the bill perfectly.

And plus we still gotta find the guy  who let him out

Sure its risky if your taking a risk
You can reduce risk with homework, I hope we are doing plenty.
And there plenty better than Dodd, we just have to find them.
I don't like settling for average, or in this case below average.

totally disagree withe anti-dodd feeling on this thread, he's been solid maybe not spectacular but then which would you prefer?  a defender that fannies about with ball and invariably gets caught out and gives away goals or a possibly less talented defender with a 'they shall not pass' attitude. I know which one i'd prefer..there should be no question keep dodd in out squad...bearing in mind that he did not play in the games when we got turned over by adelaide

I agree with paullt.. Dodd was a cut above in our back four...he was strong, composed and while not our best paymaker can still hit a good pass (just not free kicks!). For the Siggy fans out there I think Siggy has the physicality but not the skill of Dodd. On the other hand I think Durante has better feet but is not as physical as Dodd. In a league like the A League Dodd is a great CB; you need someone combative to take the legs off an Archie or Shane.

Or griffiths

I think that it is definitely in our best interest to re- sign him if he can. I can't understand what auskiwi is saying about being below average? Can we get some sort of justification as to why he is not up to standards. I think he fits in great and is what we need in our squad: a player always fighting for his position.
Because all 3 of our CBs were so competitive we got real quality and depth in that position which is what you want all over the park.

Comparing Doddy to other CBs, why do people rate him so poorly????

From what I can see it is limited (mainly) to two people... hardly a snapshot of the Phoenix supporter base despite the number of posts they make on the subject between them.

Agree with News, I think the Dodd haters are in a big minority.....

He's agricultural. ( plays in gumboots) Lacks skill and any finesse.
Not good under pressure and has limited field vision.
He gave me too many " what the f%&k was that"  moments.
Seriously think we could do better but at the moment of priorities lay elsewhere.
