I remember pre-season 1 when we did well, only to start losing when the real season opened.

Maybe Ricki is trying a bit of reverse psychology this pre-season?

Ahmad - great job mate - hope you and your lad had a brilliant night.

Just back from the game, dinner and a wander round the octagon.

My thoughts on the game for those of you who couldn't get down here to see it; just one man's opinion:

Rigter is a no-brainer-sign-asap-and-pray-he-says-yes.  Looked Ifill standard and a bit younger.  Slightly different strengths - quicker and less mazy I thought.  Good control, pretty strong competing and holding the ball and good workrate.
Took his goal well - had a bit to do to get onto the ball, control tidily with defender looking to catch him and needed a decent finish.
Coming back helping out midfield he played some brilliant balls into good areas that the others didn't expect at all and consequently did not run on for - he looked genuinely surprised a few times that no-one moved.
Only issue was it was a pretty short cameo, because after maybe ten minutes when he was pretty involved the Nix then proceeded to fail to get it over half way and generally played in guys in Brisbane colours.  I exagerate a little, but you get the drift.

None of the other trialists looked in the same league.  Mehmet was made to look very ordinary by comparison.

Sanchez looked ok, did a couple of tidy things, but mixed, and not going to light up the A-league based on what I saw tonight.  A bit more creative than our current mids, but not really enough quality imho.  The others either didn't get a lot of time or opportunity or were adequate.  Gympie looked quick and useful, but not quite a consummate defender, nor top notch on the ball under pressure, but not bad.  Thought he was a small notch above or round about Hearfield's play at full-back - that's comparing him to the hearfield that we ended up with, who was pretty useful.  Looked like he pulled something before he went off.

Was dissapointed to see Ricki start all of Lia, Brown and Manny in midfield (Ifill, Leo wide) with just Mehmed up front, 4-5-1.  I guess it blunted Brisbanes flow and we sure went to pieces when Brown went off to go 4-4-2, but dissapointing; made it hard for us to create a lot in the front third.

Back four nearly got cut up for golas a couple of times in the first half, and it was embarrasing in the second.  Some real communication and organisation probs between the CBs and FBs that may be reasonably easy to fix?  When we got totally messed over Dura and others seemed to be pushing well forward chasing the game.  A couple of bad turnovers and the back three and sometimes two behind were very exposed and didn't tighten up centrally enough nor have manny hovering to help.  Brisbane just threaded balls through the centre for their pacey guys to run onto, with support, and we weren't reacting or quick enough to track having lost possession.  Least that's what I thought was happening.  The guys were pressing for some sort of a respectable scoreline and got caught out pushing forward, by a good side, but it looked pretty bloody embarrassing.

Wasn't all bad.  Brisbane were very good, and we did help them with most of the goals.   The top 'Nix starting side - without a bunch of triallist coming and going - might have done significantly better and Brisbane played a pretty settled looking side compared to our mix and match lot.

I'd just like to point out that preseason really doesn't mean anything.

Last preseason when we beat the Roar in Hamilton, they were AWFUL. I mean absolutely terrible! I was predicting them for the wooden spoon the way they played and they went on to win.

Doesn't sound like a lot of positives to go with, BUT it is only preseason.

Good point, supporters will do well to remember this before going crazy with the thought of impending spoons.

I was only listening to the radio commentary and Maceo sounded the business... god I hope we sign him.

Chettleburg sounded OK during his cameo - anyone that was at the game have any thoughts?

Sounds like Billy wanted more of the ball but didn't get it, created space but there was nobody in the middle of the park creating anything or passing the ball to him.

Why did we play with 1up top, especially If the ball wasn't getting to him up there.

Maybe drop Ifill back in the middle to ping balls about to the front 2, but in this case 1. That's negative football, playing 1 up. If we do play 1 striker, the ball needs to get there.

Think we need to sIgn a defender. Would be nice to Nice to see Warner.

Rigters looked quite good from what i saw. I think he would give us another option. He has pace and skill and i think given opportunities, he would finish quite a few off. Just had a chat with him in Metro as well and he said he was keen to sign a contract having failed to win one at the Dons (Aberdeen FC). Also think Chettleburg showed some good ambition (stood out  more than Gonzalez). Also Warner looked class in training, so would be interested to see how he goes, given some game time as well as Mehmet (as he received little to no service before his substitution. Otherwise i think despite result, some great positives can be taken from the crowd numbers (everyone seemed excited even at the end of the game ) and also the atmosphere especially around the fever zone was very good throughout the game. All round, well worth the phoenix venturing down south.

was ok but he contributed to a couple of brisbanes goals when he overcommitted when getting forward and was played around and then couldn't track the brisbane runners on the turnover.  Showed some pace looking to get back but was starting a pass behind.
maybe was forcing things to make an impact and he came on at right FB - not his position? right? If so it would be understandable he made some wrong calls to overcommit - Herbert was making do to play him in that role after downey went off?
otherwise played a very good early ball into the box which i think it was rigters who nearly converted and looked like he wanted to play positive football with a bit of vision for a good pass

How did you guys who were there last night rate the new Dunedin stadium?

Doesn't it make you wish Wellington had dug deeper for a covered arena? As Christchurch may do now if AMI is written off.

Oh well.sh*t happens. At least we have had a chance to measure ourselves against the champs in the preseason and now we know what is required.Plenty to work on

Sounds like the zone went off after Maceo's goal. That would have been buzzy.

Don't think it is fair to judge Mehmet if we were playing a 1-9 formation. Need to be able to play a style which brings him into the game. Wish it had been televised.
Can they put the footage online???

should have been rectangular from the start, we dont need to accomodate cricket in there. How many games do they end up playing a year? 2 max?

So keen to go down to dunnaz to see the stadium

Thoughts are...

Good stadium, great turnout.

HOWEVER...Phoenix were very poor and I fear a long hard season if we don't sign at least 2-3 quality players. Ritgers could be one of those.

Sanchez probably hasn't done enough and Mehmet didn't do himself any favours last night, however in his defence Ricki never did him any favours by sticking him up front oh his own.

The midfield, Brown in particular, were posted missing for most of the game and what can you say about the defence? Torn apart very easily and caught out umpteen times trying to play the offside trap. Both full backs and Siggy were really struggling IMO.

Daniel also came on to let us all know he doesn't know what offside is either.

Overall, we've a lot to work on in the next 7 weeks or so.

must admit I was never a fan of the 4-5-1  and see nothing to make me think that its worth pursuing  witout a quality midfielder to make things happen sadly brown and Lia arnt the people for the job

I'm not strong in the technical area but someone commented on Tony Lochhead defending on the wrong side of his man at left back. He was not goalside of him - should he have been? He was between his man and the corner flag.

that sounds like the attacker had already broken his defence and (not so)BLOCKhead was trying catch up with the attacker in desperation/... Meh.. nothing new.

Hi Ankit. No. The ball was nowhere near them. It was on the right and Roar had possession. I heard the guy say it and watched very carefully. Lochhead made no attempt to go goalside at any stage so I wasn't sure if that was part of the plan (I haven't played football since high school).

NOT Paston (for the time being)

downey  siggy  dura  lochy

         Moosecat
                   Rigters
Ifill                                 leo
                Greenie
         Meh Meh

Bench: Paston, Satellite, Lia, Pantieless

This could work IMO.

Hello Ahmad. Well there is the answer in your own comment as to how dreadful the defending might have been. Wonder why didn't RH sub Lochhead for Downey.

Edit: My bad. Found out now that Gympie actually came on.

Ok I reserved judgement as I wasn't sure if there was a reason for defending that way since I have very little tactical knowledge of football. Not sure why he made no effort to move then. The winger didn't position himself very wide - in that case is Lochhead right to stay closer to the touchline than the winger?

I am no tactical guru either but here you go.!

Depends. If he was marking another opposition player by the touchline, then he's not at fault. If that was the case, someone else shud have been marking the attacker. If not, then lochhead positioned himself pretty badly.

A good sleep to reflect on the game..

Cold night for an enclosed stadium, the East and West Ends acoustics are poor. Positives were awesome view from the North Stand, ease of movement, rectangular, close to town.
Considering the size of the crowd we (Dunedin) struggled to get a chant going. Yellow fever North Stand if there is another game.
Football wise we looked poor against a far superior team.
The Wide Backs were poor, defending on the outside, left back lost concentration at end of 1st half. Sigmund was killing us in the 2nd half, distrabution and defending.
Bertos was very good in the 1st half, team was trying to press high but the Roar were very composed in playing the ball especially Mike the Goalie. Not once did Mhemet receive the ball to feet. Was on the slow side but apart from one difficult chance he didnt get many opportunities to shine.
2nd half was sad, could have been 8 as the compuser in the backs had gone and Paston didnt look like he wanted to be there by the end, he is very quiet for a Goalie.
Big difference in the 1st touch and movement off the ball. Dont think Sanchez will work out because of his touch. Felt that when he recieved the ball it went too far from him.
Early days but we definitly havent improved the team.
A couple of players for Roar really stood out, Mitch Nichols had a very free role and was able to collect a lot of ball, then drive forward (in contrast to the Phoenix). Tall centre midfielder was in the mix a lot and small centre back was impressive.
Great to have a game in your back yard, though quiet it would be great if we could have another.

Wonder if our new forwards coach had some say in it. strategy and all.. Or was it shoved down his throat to swallow by you know who.

There was talk last night about the gate takings from the game.

I believe that there were very few complimentary tickets given away. I'm not sure how corporate boxes affect gate takings - do they have to pay for "bowl tickets" also?

Let's say a total of 14,000 tickets were sold (conservatively) and these were sold for an average of $15 each ($25 adults, $15 seniors/students, $55 families @ $13.75 per ticket, $10 children).

That's $210,000. Good?

2 and a half hours of rugby into Deaker's show before last night's game gets a tiny tiny interview with our legend Piney. Missed the start. Not even sure that Deaker recognised the achievement of the attendance. Why does Radio Sport have to broadcast the Deaker ZB show when it could be the Piney show instead? What's the point of broadcasting the same Rugby show on two frequencies?

Wow is it really $150,000? And why do we have to pay the Roar? Do the 'Nix get paid if they are invited for a pre-season game over in Oz?

Were you watching the game? Did Pasty have a 'mare? I heard the bit where he fell on his ass near the end of the first half and nearly gifted a goal and I was reminded of the Slovakia game.
