Ernie is currently scouting at the Oceania u-17 Finals in the two Samoas (last para):

The timing has worked out great for him in the A-League break.

Good on him for making the effort to go himself:

"3. Merrick's island getaway

Ernie Merrick is spending his break in the Islands in a search for the next Roy Krishna. Merrick is attending the OFC U-17 World Cup Qualifying tournament in Samoa, which starts today."

And on top of that, watching football

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

that's an interesting scouting mission. The probability of him finding a 16 year old Messi who would warrent a foreign spot would be relatively low I would think. Are we looking for potential gems to sign up for the reserves on 5 year deals to make a bit of coin later?

He was at training today at Newtown Park. Plus the pod today...

The more Samoan youngsters we can sign up for development before they're lost to either form of rugby or the NFL, the better.

Do you think he'd be an improvement on Ricki?  I think he would be but I wouldn't say he's my ideal candidate.  It's hard to know whether the league has actually advanced as much as some people are saying - if that is right though, would his style of quick direct football still cut it?  I'm not sure to be honest.  He's experienced, does have authority and I think he'd come with a plan.  And I think he'd be able to work with our squad

So this Merrick bloke.  He seems OK yes?

I believe I have already retracted my scepticism of him. I really shouldn't have trusted the TardBoards to shape my views of him.

Jesus if we are all being held to account for the statements that we have made and have been wrong in hindsight and made to leave the forum as punishment then there would not be one person left.

Judging by the improvement in the standard of football played played by the Phoenix over the past 2 years the prospect of a further 3 years under the Merrick/Greenacre regime has me already reaching for my wallet for next seasons season tickets.  Good move by the owners in my view.

COACH OF THE YEAR
Permalink Permalink

Not only is Ernie a very good coach he appears to be a top guy with a great sense of humour. In fact I would love to invite him around home for a beer or maybe seeing that he is a Scotty, a few whiskeys

I am a big fan of what Ernie has done.

Let us remember though that Ricki was exactly the same. He was a young, no-BS NZ coach who took over a woeful Knights team and got results with them, and then brought us Daniel, Felipe, Smeltz, Coveny playing professional football, which was exciting and light years ahead of where we had been. As well as Brown's late runs. Then he had trouble with the owner and difficulty re-inventing the club.

The challenge is to be a good bloke and the time to judge is during the second and third albums, not in the flush of summer.

That said, massive time to be a Phoenix fan and Ernie and Greenacre are at the centre of it! Both very awesome guys, loved Greeny as a player, and I think the players we've brought in have been phenomenal.

Depends on whether it stipulated NZ Dollars. Fiji Dollars, or even better Kong Kong Dollars (1 Hong Kong Dollar = 5.731 NZD)
