Was just 'avin a read from the start of this thread... it began in early 2013 as a "who could we get after ricki?" deal, merrick came up early... 2ndbest the first to offer his opinion ;)

I would have no problem with Merrick but would make me LOL with how he completely contradicts the push to play more attractive football.

wow a lot of us seemed to feel that merrick would not play a very attractive style of football

Heh. You may be shocked to learn that Merrick plays pretty much the same kind of game as Herbert did.

Not true at all.

Merrick played a very narrow game that focused on quick passing - barely ever went wide. Basically the opposite to Ricki's tactics. His Melbourne team played the best football in the league at the time.

In my defensive, I probably shouldn't have listened to some victory fans.

I was wrong!  In my defence, I still wanted him as coach as I thought he was the best realistic option and I thought we would do well under him.  But still - I was wrong about the type of football he would deliver.

I watched most Melbourne games, sat and played football with lots of Victory fans - their opinions towards the end of Merricks reign were a bit strange.

Because I know you're a bit slow, I'm happy to admit that I was wrong and was ill-informed. It's not that shocking is it? I mean it's not like I said that 3 whole years ago. Or that I said Man United would give Moyes more than a year to prove himself because the club has 'history and tradition'.

Personally, since we're finishing this year no better than we did under Ricki (barring a miracle win against the Tards away), the jury is still out for me. I have changed my mind on Merrick's strategy and coaching; but he might be beating his head against a brick wall getting our complacent, mediocrity-accustomed senior players to perform. On the other hand, if he gets Burns to stay for next year, then I'm wrong again.

Surely Merrick is complicit in accepting mediocrity with his pre season decleration of the teams "top 6" goal.

Not necessarily, that may have been for public consumption only; managing public expectations, not the players.

Bet if I was to make a similar comment about you I would more than likely get banned. The only comment I made was "still think this.' I did not mention Man Utd.

Probably reacting cause you think you know everything and are never wrong.

This is our most ever points though - it's just unfortunate that the way the league panned out this year that it got us 4th. In the other 4 years where it's been a 27 game season, 46 points would have got us 3rd in three of those seasons and 2nd in one.

NO!! How dare you use sarcasm to the shining intellect of a former AW. All these former AWs know everything. It's a club creed that the rest of us are all wrong cause we have no idea what it's like to pull on a silver fern. I am sure there are countless emails back an forth between Sam, Danny, Billy, Leggy, Fred, BT, Ricki, Wynton all laughing at us muggles and how our opinions are so out of whack and how back in their day, people like us would still be attached to the whiteware.

You should apologise to Leggy for even allowing us to bask in his opinion. Bow your head in shame sir

That's a good point. I don't know. If I have though, when I wake up hungover and contemplating my mistakes, I'll never be as deluded drunk, as I would be being an EX-AW. It's not like there is a sane one out there preaching truths.

So unless any coach does better Ricki, they must be a bit shark.

You do make a great point about managing public expectations vs inhouse expectations.

As a point of conversation, has it crossed your mind that the years Ricki did what he did, going as far as he did, he could have over achieved? It is possible for average coaches (and I am not labelling Ricki an average coach here) to go further than they should do making them seem better than they are.
