I know it shows my lack of football knowledge but can anyone tell me who leggy is?

All White leg end.

I'll take my chance because luck is on my side or something...

Her name is Rio, she don't need to understand...

Oh Rio, Rio, hear them shout across the land..."

Google John Legg brother.

Google seems somewhat unreliable.

Can I just simply suggest, AucklandP, going back and reading every single conversation that Leggy has had on the threads on this forum? That should cover most of it and then some more.

John Legg is a former association football player who represented New Zealand at international level.

Legg made his full All Whites debut in a 3-5 loss to Australia on 5 November 1967[1] and ended his international playing career with 12 A-international caps and 2 goals to his credit,[2][3] his final cap an appearance in a 1-1 draw with Macao on 5 November 1975.[1]

Ernie says: we're looking for a (not a not-a-)striker, and next year our goal is far better than just a playoff spot.

Good to hear.

Ernie also says that Roly flew 5000 miles.

From the Age, I especially agree with the last sentence

"Ernie Merrick also proved himself, though one might argue he did not need to. He dominated the early part of A-League history, but few are in doubt the league has moved on in the intervening years, and the question was whether Merrick could adapt and remain in the hunt for titles, especially with a Phoenix team that rarely threatened the top spots.

After one season to evolve the team, didn't the Phoenix prove themselves?

Merrick followed the recent appetite for Spanish players with two excellent midfielders, Alex Rodriguez and Albert Riera, proving again he knew a footballer when he saw one, and produced a team with a versatile attacking line that brought the best out of Nathan Burns, indeed, enough to restore his Socceroos career.

A late-season slump cannot diminish a superb season by an experienced technician."

and he will fly 5000 more, just to be the man who flew 10000 miles to reach the RoF and score?

My hesitancy in endorsing Merrick to remain as coach past this current season is mainly based on his inability to sustain what runs of success (sometimes outstanding) or good form we have had in his three seasons here. I don't think it is rude or belittling to only describe those times, where the the team looked confident and playing well, as "flashes" mixed with other times where there has been very little to be enthused about.

Whether Merrick can get "cut through' with the whole playing group, with his messages and philosophy's, to perform is really what I am wondering, and I have my doubts.

I think we need to know a lot more about the background goings on before we call for Ernie's head.

Even the stuff we do know, (license, schedules, injuries, license impacting on recruitment, etc), would be pretty bad for any coach to deal with and I reckon that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Way way to early for questioning Merrick's position at the club.

The only thing I would counter that with is that Merrick has, through media, seemed happy enough with the situation, and spoken about specific things that he is pleased with eg enjoys taking the club around the country, the club have been very generous with their budget for signing players, he has a great squad.

These sound like optimal conditions to succeed, that hasn't happened.

What and you honestly believe that?

He doesn't throw a paddy as it's not his way. I'm guessing he has been advised to not to talk about the license crap as things are pretty sensitive. It's been discussed over and over again on here that the Nix do not operate on a level playing field compared to the other clubs in the league.

I think he's being the diplomat and urbane because that's who he is.

If he was saying Ive got a useless squad and they cant play for sh*t, I'd be calling for his head.

He can only, at the moment, play with who he has.

I think once we find out if we have 10 more years then Ernie and the club owners may sort out a proper squad. Right now we are just paddling the water to survive as some players are nearing the end of their careers. Siggy already having announced his retirement.

Was about to say the exact same thing. I do like Ernie, clearly a decent guy and has some ability as a coach, but he seems very fixed in his ideas and I don't think he's capable of changing anything for the better. He can tinker with the line up but the way we play never changes!
