ex-Nix: Where/what are they now?

I didn't think he still had 2 years on his contract

Was off contract at completion of last season. May have had an option for 2 more years, but with so much uncertainty around the A League coming from all angles, the Nix were hardly in a position to quickly offer a new deal/or take up any option if one existed.

With the amount the of ex A League players now in the ISL, you also obviously have to assume the money there is a lot better as well. But nice kudos to the current culture at the Nix that Taylor, Hooper and Steinmann have all talked very warmly about last season. Stupid virus.

Matti Steinmann seemingly signed a two-year extension earlier this year (this isn't just from that article, it's the word around town) but was then released to take up the ISL offer. Why it was never announced and why his release was never announced is a mystery.

You reckon if you asked the Nix they'd tell you, or do you have to route all requests through Piney now?

Hooper vs Krishna, with Williams on the bench in today's ISL opener. Currently Hooper 0 - Krishna 1

It's a pity he never became a kiwi while here.  Would be an awesome future All White I'm sure.

Everytime I read that team's name for some reason I think the club is based in the USA... Just sounds like the name of a beach town in California...

Well Altona is by the beach in Melbourne, though there isn't much that's magic about it, especially as you move away from the playa.

Blake Powell scores for APIA in a 1-3 loss to CCM in a pre-season game. Glad to see him back playing, I thought he had given it away after a failed stint in the Philippines.

Great to see Keegan written about. It seemed a crazy time when he was selected. I wish him well.

An aside Darije Kalezić is currently coaching MVV in the Eerste Divisie (Dutch 2nd tier that Michael Woud is playing in).

MVV are currently 17th (4th bottom). So another sacking may not be far away. Though looks like there is no relegation from the Eerste Divisie, this season??

Marco Rojas. I was just reading an article about his hamstring injury and they said he is 29 which is true. How fast time flies. It seems like only yesterday when he was only 16(?) and the Fever sponsored him a scholarship with the Phoenix. 13 (?) years ago. Holy crap, where did that all go? I am suddenly feeling very old.

To me it feels the opposite, like he's been gone from the Nix for a long time now.

He's had 6 different clubs since leaving (one of those he's been at on 3 different occasions), and he's barely set foot back in NZ in the intervening 8 years.

is there enough interest for him to have his own thread in the General football section like Krishna does?

Yeah why not. He made a big impression in NZ, and read somewhere that he acknowledged his time at Welnix was a big part of his development.

Though from memory was as much about getting away from all the distractions of an exciting big city like Hong Kong!! and having a singular process on his football in NZ. Basically if he hadn't left Honkers it wouldn't have happened for him. And now he's a young 20 yr old English lad in the MLS.

Still only 33. You'd think he could still offer something to a team in the league, he wasn't bad for city when he was last in the A-League
