Somebody has made the pointed out already, look at the LA game, I think there was a sizeable number of that crowd who have never been to a football game before, or have been since (including the finals) because of the David Beckham factor. Netball mums, girls etc

Reality is probably any other team outside the EPL big 4 would struggle to sell out.

I'm a girl and was at the Beckham game (not just to wait and hope he took off his shirt) and was at a couple of Phoenix games before and after.
You do need to bring over a team with a recognisable name.  John Terry's been in the news lately

I'd rather chants of "take off your shirt" did not drown out the "same old Portugese, always cheating" whenever he takes a dive!

I hope that was a joke.

Newcastle United IS one of the biggest clubs in the world in terms of supporter base, infrastructure and past players/managers and even some current players (Smith, Butt, Knolan) but just not in the trophy cabinet

it would be great to get them here.

50,000 fat geordies doesn't equal a big supporter base.

Three for me, and two for them.

You brought it upon yourself. Nobody cares about Newcastle outside of Britain and the odd expat in Australia, NZ etc.

Go ask your average football fan in Argentina, Chile or Russia if they know who Newcastle is and you'll get a fairly common answer. No.

Three for me, and two for them.

to each their own i guess.

and when you say "nobody cares about (club) outside Britain", well frankly that could be said about 16 teams in the EPL.

Yes that's my point. Only four clubs in Britain could begin to consider themselves big on a worldwide scale. And yes, before any Celtic or Rangers mongs come in here, that includes you. And no, you aren't big.

Three for me, and two for them.

Arsenal but the likelihood of that happening is pretty slim. A team like West Brom would be good.

Like I said, absolutely ridiculous. There's a sh*tload of clubs around the world that have 1) massive support base, bigger than Newcastle's 2) great youth schools which have produced many more stand-out players than Newcastle, and 3) won much more silverware than Newcastle could ever dream of.

I mean, Newcastle are a fairly big club, but aren't nowhere near the league of the truly big clubs in England (particularly Perennial strugglers Liverpool and Man United), let alone the rest of the world.

Celtic are a big club.

The fact they're having some hard times now does not diminish that fact.

hey, If Celtic are a big club then NUFC surely is !!!

Celtic have 90+ major trophies and have been European champions. As opposed to a club that's won didly squat in the last 80 years.

The support base is comparable, and Celtic have certainly had more impact on Scottish football than Newcastle has had on English.

No comparison really.

yes sure, but then comes in the ordinary folk (like what Terry.S was saying) I would say that both these teams are recognisable in the same way to people in NZ.

if you had a choice to Bring either Celtic, or NUFC to play the nix what club would the city want to see ?

a SPL side or an EPL side  ? and personally i would go for the latter one.

That's a different discussion altogether.

Don't think either game would be a sell-out, but Newcastle would be probably easier to market because of the high profile the Premiership currently enjoys.

OK.

1. The Toon ARE a big club... in NE England
2. There are no big names in the team - they jumped ship at the end of last season like the dirty little mercenary rats they are (are you enjoying your time off Owen you over paid, under performing little tw@t?)
3.  The toon have not won anything of significance since way before i was born - so that is close to the cretaceous period.
5.  If they come there will definately be at least 4 of us turning up and a few others that have shown their stripes at games or around town.
6. Another 5 or 6 will be Mackems and 'boro followers who will want to yell rude words at the toon (e.g. Weeze keys are these?)

I think we do need to get a team with broad appeal - including the obligatory get your kit off for the ladies bit.

So I think that if not the top 4 then possibly Blackburn (Nelsen can show us his rear admirals), Spurs would be massive (apparently Shania Twain is a fan), maybe even the Toffees.  There do seem to be a lot of folk from North of Hadrian's wall here in NZ so maybe one of those teams could do the trick as well.

Whoooooo it is nice to see such blind faith in the Toon as befits all supporters, but the rest of the unbelievers and infdels will keep their credit cards in their wallets if they came out and then it would be up to you and me to buy all the tickets and merchandise in order for the game to break even.

Maybe.  I've found the iraqgoals feed very scratchy and keeps cutting out.
I've given up on a couple of games that i've tried to watch.

well my own preference is probably obvious about who I would like to see the nix play...and come to think about it saw half a dozen birmingham city shirts on display in wellingto over the weekend. would also have the advnatage of all the other midland sides supporters coming along to see the nix beat the blues...of course it would never happen...lol

Everton would make sense given Cahill and the probability that Australia would need to be involved to make it financially viable.

No they aren't. Like Newcastle, no one cares about them outside Britain.

I guess it wouldn't have had the apeal, but if the club had said yes to Boca, I'd be absolutely stoked.

Very true, that's why Blackburn probably wouldn't work, because the Ryan Nelsen factor wouldn't apply in Aus. The top few clubs in England, Spain and Italy would be the only clubs pretty much guaranteed as a sell-out, but I think people are underestimating how much the profile of football has grown since the Beckham game. The star apeal of the opposition matters less now than then, we sold out a game against Newcaste Jets FFS!

Blackburn could well work.

Not quite the same stardom as Cahill, but point taken. The other difference is Everton is probably more popular a club.

The sold out Jets game was because it was a semi-final - i.e. it meant something, just like 14 Nov.

A non-comp game would have to have a big drawcard to get lots of non-football fans in to sell out for a one-off event.

On one level I actually don't think a glamour club would be good.  We'd get lots of punters in and they'd see the nix get done like a dinner, and then everyone would go away muttering about how it's not the EPL and how much ground we have to make up.

However I guess Becks lot came and trounced us but it didn't set things back any.

I know the importance of the game plays a big part, but that's not my point (Any chance to get at the Pasta Sauce Fiddlers).
If we'd played that semi pre Becks, AWs, fourth spot finish, Perth Penalties etc I doubt we would have sold out, but these games and a great 3rd season have taken the popularity around the country up level after level. It's a shame it's months away until we can see the effect of the home playoffs have on our crowds in normal HAL games.
Anyway, interest now is a lot higher than it was when we were discussing potential preseason games this time last year, and we can afford to go for teams who maybe aren't quite as "big"

They have a few Aussie's in the squad don't they?  Not as big players as Cahill, mind.

For the record I'd pay to watch Newcastle play.  I don't think they're a massive club, but they're certainly big and I know a heap of people who follow them, if not support them outright.  Don't know about a sell out, though.

I agree with Oska's point that the profile now opens up more possibilities than it could have 12 or 24 months ago.

But e.g. while LG and all the YF members here may pay to see the toon.  That does not mean Joe/Josephine public will.  The football mums will not be dragging their kids off to see Gutierrez wear his spiderman mask, or watch Carroll deck one of his team mates.

Now if they got Cheryl Tweedy to come along as well, you'd probably have TVNZ giving huge coverage and all the middle-aged men (like me) would ensure a sell-out.

I reckon Manchester United, theyre the biggest name in world football without a doubt. Sure Barca, Real, Arse and Pullers... etc, are all well known names but Man U would do it for the general public like no other.

Good point J82, and my "massive" bad...

I think we should have a double header... Barca in the fisrt half as a warm up... followed by the mighty Gooners - show all the egg ballers some proper football
