What exactly do you base that on?

As much as I hate to get into this childish bitch fest, I saw a ranking come out a couple of weeks ago that still had Newcastle in the worlds 20 biggest clubs, cant remember what it was based on but they were certainly there.

stadium capacity - 4th largest in England & attendance figures 44k av IIRC & there were 48k to the Sheffield game this morning. , past players & managers (think Shearer - still  leading EPL goal scorer, Keegan, Bobby Robson RIP - these guys are legends)

oh, and the mighty Toon army !!!

i'm guessing you have never even been to Saint James' Park (maybe even the UK ???)

and even debt - yes we have some, but not as much as clubs like Man U, Perennial strugglers Liverpool...

So what? Getting 44k every second week doesn't make you big. Leeds still pull them in, do you think they're big too? (You probably do )

Newcastle fans are the most overrated in all of sports. Even more so than Scottish or English national team fans.

Tottenham and Everton are both bigger than you.

Three for me, and two for them.

1 - Your first link doesn't work

2 - Your second link only includes European teams. I could name at least four South American clubs who are bigger globally than Newcastle.

No they are not. I logged in to see what teams people are interested in having come here, and have had to trudge through the lot.

Having read all this I can see that you have lost the argument but cant face it.

I'm wondering if it is worth bringing any of these clubs here for a holiday. The Beckham factor was obvious but dont know if anyone else has the same drawing power as him

Tbf, revenue is a pretty good indication on how big the club is.

When I added in my "Arsenal" comment I was thinking about this from a purely New Zealand perspective. And if a NZer had to list as many Football clubs he/she knew Newcastle would be fairly high up the list.

Personally, I think Newcastle would draw more supporters to the ROF than everyone in the EPL except the big four and maybe Everton/City. (Possible Spurs as well)Michael2010-04-06 15:02:17

I wouldn't think it is the complete way to tell but I'd say it's certainly a fair indicator.  I mean, how many massively rich clubs aren't 'big'?

Wouldn't a lot of their revenue be gained firstly by large attendances at games + big TV dollars as people around the world watch them and from all the merchandise they sell (in both their homeland and further abroad).

Open to being proved wrong but that's just how it seemed to me with no more than a minutes thought behind it.

Exactly what LG said. And your response to this might be "it doesn't measure trophies" But success will see increased revenue, so its actually a fairly good measure.

Moving on:
Back to the topic of what teams do we want to see, and what teams would sell out the Rof.

Why is there 7 English clubs on the list?

Because of the Premiership and its TV rights which are sold worldwide on a revenue sharing principle among the clubs, which in turn gives many of the clubs in the league a good source of revenue they wouldn't otherwise have. That has nothing to do with how 'big' individual clubs are, but more with how the Premier League has managed to position itself in the global sporting market.

Attendances at the games only account for small portions of clubs' revenues. The big money is in the TV rights, and that's where the Premier League is miles ahead of other leagues. And that's why so many people here seem to think that half the Premiership are among the biggest clubs in the world, where in reality few would have even heard of many of them just 15-20 years ago.

Ok, so if we agree that the big 3/4 are out of reach surely the next best bet after that to fill an NZ stadium would be Blackburn off the back of Nelsen. Even them I'm not convinced that would pack it out.

Someone made a good point a couple of pages back that instead of putting all the eggs in filling the caketin basket they could play a series of games across the country, you could comfortably pull 20k in each of Welly, Auck and Chch for a Blackburn game I would have thought which would give somewhere near the same revenue/returns/covering of costs as a one off 30k at the RoF

"Hang on. Why didn't you give EG abuse for "hi jacking"? Playing forum favourites are we LG"

He stated an opinion less than 40 times.  That's allowable in my books.  Add to that he doesn't have a history like you (just the other day massive argument over nothing with Michael(?) from memory).  Add to this the topic is somewhat interesting and not completely repetitive.

On topic:

Fair points EG and I agree that a lot of it is due to how the Premier League has managed things.  The clubs revenue has come through their exposure (thanks to the Premier League) and I don't think a club could be truly big without these two things (revenue + exposure).  So if there is a high revenue then there's almost certainly reasonable (at least) exposure, yes?  So you could still not unreasonably say that you can tell the club is big by it's revenue.

Further on topic still:

With regards to Newcastle United I would want to see them and if they played one game then I'm not sure about a sell-out, but a couple of games and regardless of whether they sold out or not I should think a large profit could be made.  Though I'd be happy to see any of the top 7 or so clubs in the Premier League.

EDIT: sorry 2ndbest, didn't realize til after I posted this that this was also somewhat off-topic, so apologies for that.  I did add some relevant stuff though.

What about a German team?  Would there be any hope there?  Bayern Munich are a big team (can't be bothered arguing it with anyone, so take my word for it) but getting them here would be a mission.  What about Werder Bremen with the whole Wynton Rufer connection?
