Could also get a sponsor to cough up prize money and naming rights for the comp. $200,000 wouldnt go astray for any club. and Air NZ and Telecom arnt doing any major sponsorship deals in sport at the moment. Hell even Vodafone would probably be keen if we could sort out the right team to come over.

Can we then have a HN v Fowler running race a la Darren Lehmann v Mark Richardson?

Three for me, and two for them.

HN, Fowler, Joey Barton and Ricki... or perhaps a boat race would be more fitting?

the only weekend this could logistically happen in wellington would be the 24th & 25th of July.

HAL starts very early or mid august,
WC ends 11 July,
all blacks test on at stadium 17th July
and wellington npc has its first two games at home on the 1st and 8th of august.

Gives us a better idea of what we have to aim for. who do we talk to to get the ball rolling?

Late July would be too close to the English season wouldn't it?... with the 4-5 day travel/recovery time for them?

I know.... but consensus seems to be TS wants a "big" team to sell out the ROF - that is more likely to happen with a mid tier EPL team (ie: Everton, Blackburn) or a lower tier EPL team (ie: Toon, Tottenham) than anything but the best from the continent - which I would think makes them more accessible (ie: cheaper lol).

True for a one-off game, but if we had a tournament on the lines proposed, than that's a different scenario altogether.

I'd love to see someone like Villarreal. Or Athletic Bilbao.

I would say so... but few Euro teams have a "name" that would bring in the avg sports fan (ie: those that went to AW's and Nix finals)... and thats who we need to fill the ROF... I would think only:

AC Milan (with Becks)
RM (with Ronaldo)
Barca (with Messi)

Most of us would luv to see a Bayern, a Lyon, a PSV, a Boca, or a Benfica - but the avg punter wouldn't shell out fifty-odd Kiwis to see them I don't think... whereas with a Toon, Toffs, or LWC's they more likely would...

Then again I could be plain wrong.

who is to say those teams wont have a house hold name after the WC. I would bet a lot of money on the NZ public becoming more aware of lesser club teams players after this WC.

Na, I think you are plain right there.

And getting a team with someone who has just made a name for themselves in the WC- no time to organise that- and we'd be battling every other team in the world for the opportunity to play the new big thing.

Brilliant stuff UberGunner! This could be quite a significant event with the right teams and sponsor mix.

Oooo, So glad I came back to seeing a thread like this!

Any EPL team would do for me. Would love to see a MLS team (apart from Galaxy) To come here.

Atlante FC or Olympiacos would be aweesome. So many teams.

Gonna have to think about this..

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Will be interesting to see who Sydney get over.
Olympiacos has already approached them about a game in Sydney.
But they are also keen on Playing Melbourne. So that may take some of the shine off it if they play those two before heading here.

I for one would be morfe interested if it was just Olympiacos v The NixStefan2010-04-07 22:50:04

Oh sh*t, thats Awesome. That'd be great if they could get over here. Them or Panathinaikos from the Super League, But it's good news that they've shown interest!

Found a story on it

Sydney and Melbourne lose to them then we beat them. Thats what would happen.

I think we need to forget the "I for one would love to see "insert favourite continental/Asian/Nth-Sth American team name here" as that isn't going to happen and isn't going to fill the ROF... as per my point earlier - Terry has said (quite understandably) that he NEEDS a team that'll sell out the ROF...

If it happens will have to be an EPL (or Gers/Hoops) team (or one of the BIG continental teams) that has the profile amongst "sports" fans here so they'll pay the wedge to be part of the occassion.

I too (and most of us here) would pay plenty to see the Nix play a top Greek, Portugese, Turkish, Dutch, French, etc team... but we (ie: NZ football fans) aren't gonna fill the joint...

I for one would be more than happy for Terry's sake to see 30k + at the Ring paying $50 slides to watch an Everton, Blackburn, Newcastle, etc...

...maybe even a 'boro... they'd be an easy sell down here with Killen and McDonald too, assuming they're still there (???)

I think that on the back of this season, and the world cup, the Nix are a drawcard in themselves. If the exhibition game is played outside of Wellington it will sell out, partially on the back of the Nix, almost regardless of who they play. In Wellington this will be much less the case, and a big name will be needed.

My belief is that if it is a really big name, then Wellington deserve the game, just because they do. Otherwise give it to Auckland (admittedly I felt ill typing that).

Bollocks (and I mean that in the nicest possible way lol).

If it's a game against half decent opposition (or the Nighthawks) it has to (and will) be in Welly.

End of.

I suggested this in another thread a while ago but what about a two day tournament where 4 teams have two games (1 each day), and we invite 1 "Big name" team, a team from Asia and one other HAL team. We play the big team and the Asian team, ensuring decent interest in the nix fixtures, the big team get us and the other HAL team, and the Asian team gets 2 A-league teams who could be possible future opponents in the ACL. Having the Asian/Austrailian/Foriegn team means we could sell TV coverage and make money from TV rights. Also give the Big team the opportunity to sell coverage to its on-line subscribers.

It could become an annual event similar to the sevens and receive council funding to help promote, and make it a huge weekend for retailers and hospitality in Wellington.

This solution would check a lot of boxes for Tony & Terry
1) good money spinner as ticket prices could be increased due to admission on each day including two match's.
2) actually good preparation for the nix and a good chance to use some squad players  over the weekend.
3) Huge profile event that would bring visitors from Australia and Asia and possibly further if the Big team played another match in Australia.
4) it would also get huge media attention post WC as the country would still be buzzing about football

This is the most sense I've heard so far this off-season.  That in itself isn't high praise but rest assured I think this is an awesome idea.

Someone in contact with the club let Tony know about it.

Just had a good read of the thread (skipped the bollocks)

My bits:
Those who think only the big 4 will sell out the stadium are underestimating slightly the impact the Nix had on the town in the last half of the season. There are plenty of people I know who would go if the Nix played an EPL team like Blackburn. The Nix are the flavour and they'll still ride off the back off some of that end of year stuff for a wee while. We might even have a few more decent players added to our squad that would make it interesting.
Not saying they will sell out, I just think a few are underestimating pulling power of some teams and our own heroes

We would more than likely have to ride on the coat-tails of what teams head to Aussie. The only way to make a trip viable for an EPL team, or any European team, is a tour. If Terry is keen on getting a big name team here, I'm sure he'll want to talk to A-League sides as well to share costs

If we got an EPL team they would likely just turn up with their reserve/youth team anyway, unless there is a clause in the contract. Personally,   Lpool, man utd, chelsea or newcastle would get me to the ground. A arsenal, sunderland or middlesborough would not. Tommy_Smyth2010-04-10 11:53:22

I think your missing the point. Phoenix fans are not the people they are trying to get to these games. Its everyone else who isn't already a fan that they make these games for.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Man U, Chelsea basically top flight European clubs or well known ones with a name people would recognise. These would be the clubs I know would draw a crowd to the ring of fire easily.

I think that would be the answer to drawing crowds. But I think it would have a very low probability of it happening, and as mentioned, they would probably field their reserves, unless there is a clause int he contract which says field a good player blah blah blah, you lads know what I'm getting at I'm sure.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Gee, if you couldn't get to the game if the Nix play Aresnal, Sunderland, Middlesborough or any team in NZ, then what are you doing on here?

Didn't you hear bro? No one likes Arsenal because they play boring football, filled up with long hopeful balls from the back, completely bypassing the midfield in the process. They also like to stack their team full of brutish, thuggish, clumsy players who would struggle in the SPL. The fans don't have many expectations so continue to support this embarrassment of a club.

Oh wait....i just described Stoke

I love how he grouped Man U, Chelski and Newcastle on one side, and Sunderland, Boro and Arsenal on the other.
