So they are not even playing the game at their home ground? I just googled the ground it has capacity 6,000 and an NPL team plays there.

Their home ground is having all the seats replaced over that period off time apparently. Makes even less sense to take the home game off us and give it to Adelaide.

Shows how tv is a priority over fan attendance. Such bs.

There were a number of factors that all converged, in my opinion.

The crowd numbers peaked in Wynton Rufer's last season. His retirement in and of itself certainly was a significant lost draw card.

The club then was also stressed financially... which had an effect, both on marketing and signings.

They then signed a cadre of South Melbourne folks, players and coaches... and, well it didn't work out very well. It had a significant impact (in a number of ways) on crowd numbers.

Performances suffered, and crowd numbers dropped further.

The Kingz then went under, and the Knightz were founded...

....and for all sorts of reasons they were never really embraced en masse. A number of die hard Kingz fans were actually offended that the Knightz seemed to assume that they would automatically become Knightz fans when they felt they were Kingz fans... either way, the trials and tribulations of the final two years were pretty much a train wreck. Poor results just reinforced the disillusionment, and by then the downward spiral had become self reinforcing.

Thanks for this, I found it very interesting to read. Such an untapped market and no one with the nouse and resources to capture it.

I get why the smaller Aussie clubs might struggle to come here, but it's beyond me why Adelaide Utd can't play us here.

Doesn't make a difference, FFA are paying for all FFA Cup travel

Really? Then there's absolutely no good reason why this can't be played in Wellington. Makes it even worse.

Part of the sponsorship contract with Qantas, perhaps?

This I am not sure about.  I think it may be the clubs but don't quote me on it

I don't mind really. 6000 at a 6000 capacity stadium where NPL football is played is better than 6000 at Westpac stadium. I'm just glad we're in it.

So this will be televised? If not here than in Aussie?

I don't know if they have announced what they are screening - been no word on screening in NZ.

Hopefully we can get an ausy stream if true, otherwise does anyone know of an Adelaide radio station that does it through tune in?

Interesting....Gombau is coaching the All Stars between 1-10 august, and they should have some players involved in that too.

To be honest, think it's a case of us being lucky to even be in this competition - never thought any games would be played in Wellington. Maybe in the future.

what good reason is there for not having any games in Wellington though? I genuinely can't think of one that justifies handicapping a team so severely, even if we are "lucky to be in it"

Maybe Sky didn't want to pay for it and therefore do the broadcast for the Australian market?

OR we could find out in a trial game against decent opponents exactly what our other players are made of. Chance to see Roly in that role so we know what we are facing if Riera does get injured.....

This first edition of the cup is about engaging football locally in Aussie by taking A-League teams out into the community stadiums. That was FFA's first priority. Its not really a handicap in my eyes as there is always a chance we would never have drawn a home game even if we got all the way to the final. This happens in cup football.

Apart from saying you've played against Juventus, what is the incentive to play for the All Stars? Is there any monetary gain for the players, or to the clubs for letting their players join the squad?

Im waiting for a couple of shock exits this round of the cup, then next year those same clubs electing to not release players for All Stars citing it as detrimental to their previous cup campaign. Could make for an even more diluted All Stars next year ...

The new CBA signed last season elevates the All Stars game to the same status as an international call up. Clubs can't pull their players out without reason.

TV coverage in Australia is minimal: Fox are committing to only a minimum of 10 games but that includes the quarters, semis and the Final.

Chances of the Nix - Adelaide game being broadcast are minimal.

http://nelbie.com/kevmarl/2014/7/28/ffa-cup-footba...

http://www.foxsports.com.au/football/ffa-cup/the-i...

'Fox Sports will broadcast a minimum of 10 LIVE matches throughout the inaugural competition including Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and the Westfield FFA Cup Final on Tuesday 16 December, 2014."

"There are five matchdays (16 games) in the round of 32, with four games per night for the next three Tuesdays, with the fixtures concluding on Wednesday 20 August."

But they will only broadcast a maximum of one game of the four each Tuesday with live updates on scores from the remaining three.

"Simon Hill and Gary Phillips will call all the action from Magic Park in Broadmeadow, while Mike Cockerill (Manly United v Sydney Olympic), Adam Peacock (South Springvale v South Cardiff) and Nick Meredith (Olympic FC v Melbourne Knights) will be on deck for the key moments from the other three clashes."

If they've been selected after voting then fair enough. Can't imagine a player who doesn't want to be involved, or who their club doesn't want involved, would be forced to go up for voting for selection.

Interesting starting line up with no Riera, Manny, Lia or Roly. Something like this?

                    Moss

Boxall    Dura    Siggy   Doyle

       Ridenton  Rodriguez

                    Burns

Kenny       Brockie       Boyd

Yeah just read that. Hopefully in for Kenny rather than in that midfield diamond.
