Lets see how long it takes for them to balls this one up. My money is on the Melbourne Victory to be exempt from this Rule change!

FOOTBALL Federation Australia has launched an assault on divers, with cheats to be banned retrospectively on video evidence under changes to the A-Leagues disciplinary codes, to be introduced this season.

FFA will today unveil the tough new measures which will name and shame players who dive. A clause to be added to the regulations will compel the weekly match review panel to search for instances of simulation missed by the referee, and to ban the culprits for two matches if they dive to win a penalty, dive to get an opponent sent off, or both. If a player is sent off as a result of simulation, he will be able to have his red card rescinded.

The A-League becomes only the second competition in the world after the Scottish Premier League to introduce the sanctions, and A-League boss Archie Fraser is confident the cheats will soon get the message once the new season kicks off next week.

The level of simulation last season was clearly unacceptable, and its something we needed to address, said Fraser. Nobody wants to put up with it, not ourselves, and certainly not the fans. Australians want their football tough, but most of all they want it fair.

Asked whether he was confident the threat of being banned will change behaviour, Fraser replied: I think the chance of being banned for two games is a pretty strong message. If youre prepared to take the risk, youre probably going to miss a decent chunk of the season.

- Sydney FC defender Sebastian Ryall is waiting on the outcome of his appeal against being banned from playing while he fights charges of committing a sexual act with a minor in the courts. Ryalls appeal against being suspended by FFA until September 3 was heard on Tuesday night, with the tribunal reserving its decision.

In principle I don't mind this initiative, however, it could backfire disastrously.  By backfire I mean it could hurt us.

I think a large part of Daniel's problem now is that he's a small bloke. Most of the time he isn't diving, it's just that he can hardly stand in a gale.

Plus, I think people underrate how good he is at drawing fouls.

Yay. Yet another outlet for Miron to mouth off at the FFA during the season. We will have coaches complaining every single week that so-and-so was diving and should be suspended. Players get booked for trying to get another player cautioned during the game, what will the FF-Ail do when coaches try to do the same post-match?

Tune in for more double standards.

Thin edge of the wedge here. Agreed HN and DKP22.
Just imagine..Miron and co. will probably have their own tv crews on all their matches before long so that they can present, in living colour, from multiple camera angles, their version of events.Where would it stop?

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

Will be interesting to see how they manage this. I've long thought that Football needs to head down this track. Hoping that Daniel either cleans up his act or they do start suspending him. Sick of watching that cheat make us look stupid. Same goes for some players i n other teams.

What about if they dive to get a free kick? With the right player that can be just as beneficial as a penalty. At the end of the day cheating is cheating, it doesn't matter whether the outcome is a goal, red card or simply an innocuous free-kick, they should be banned.

I guess it's nice to see some sort of retribution being introduced, but can't help feeling that this will cause a lot of controversy.

Also how that ends up working out for kiwi teams in an ozzie comp. If it goes along the lines of NRL video refs,i can see someone getting suspended for bending down to do their boots up.

Suspended for allegedly trying to lead the opposition astray?

Must say, Coveny was a wily old goat, no doubt about it but the penalties he won us were pretty fair calls from memory.

And with regards to Brosque, quite possibly the ugliest A-League player since Scott Gemmill.

What happens when a penalty that wins a game is later said to be a dive by the FFA?

I think this is great news, and will begin to put an end to the biggest blight on our game.

If a few players (from both sides of the Tasman) get banned for 'going down a bit easy' then so be it - eventually they will learn to cut it out of their game and football will be better for it.

Only problem I have is that it will go the way of the moving the ball 10 yards towards the goal for back-chat to the referee.  It happened about once and then was promptly forgotten about.

Agree with you FM re biggest blight.

Yes it is new and there will be issues of consitency and even-handedness (esp wrt the Nix), but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be tried.

I suppose my query is are any other leagues trying this (video citing especially)?  If not why not?  Are there more divers here than anywhere else or are we more progressive?  (last part is laced with irony)

Yes, Neil Razor Ruddock is the man.

I watched tyhe 1966/67 League Cup Final yet again and some of the tackles from both sides were pretty nasty, yet two things happened. The tackled player got back up fairly quickly and carried on and the referee waved play on a lot. No rolling around in that game, cert EPL players would have been hospitalised at least!

So what is a dive?  Is it when there is no contact?  Or the tackle was a foul, but not hard enough to knock the player over so they fall over anyway?  Or when the tackle was legitimate, but the player falls over when they could have stayed on their feet?

What happens if a player is off balance and trips when they don't intend too?  Will there be education of the players so they know what is allowed and what isn't?  Will overseas players see this as a deterrent to playing in the A-League?

While this may be a good idea it remains to be seen how well it is implemented.

I think its all in the rules. A dive is simulation. Where a player has fell in order to get a penalty/ free kick. Usually with little or no contact. Or throwing your arms in the air when you are nudged. Hopefully the FFA will give benefit of the doubt and implement it to the worse cases only.

DF - Lulz.

PWF - You'd think they should only be looking at no-contact dives, and getting testimony from players. But often members of these kinds of tribunals get over-zealous.

As someone already mentioned, what if a player trips over themselves or just stumbles and is awarded a penalty?  Will not be happy if we are pinged due to that.

In this brave new world, the player who trips over himself (is News playing A League now???) will immediately get up and say to the ref that it was not a penalty.  If the ref stands by his decision, the attacking team will just knock the resulting penalty out for a throw in.

Due to the fear of being banned a labelled a blouse wearing, shandy drinking cheat, honesty will prevail.  Then we will return to the good old days of groin high bobsleds and refs waving play on.
