A week or two.

FOOTBALL Federation Australia will not manipulate the A-League fixture in the wake of David Villa’s shock signing for Melbourne City.
The 2014-15 schedule is understood to be just weeks, if not days, away from being finalised.

On the back of news that Villa is headed Down Under here on a short-term deal between October and December, fans of the other nine A-League clubs keenly await the fixture’s release to see whether Spain’s all-time leading goalscorer will come to town.

But A-League boss Damien de Bohun confirmed to the Herald Sun no changes would be made to the fixture despite the buzz around Villa’s signing.

“I think it’s important to say that the fixture is not about one player,” de Bohun said.

“The fixture is about building a sustainable competition and building as much balance as we can.

“I think it’s fair to say that, having worked closely with Melbourne Heart and now Melbourne City, they’ve gone about it the right way, they’ve engaged us, and we’re planning around their growth this year.

“It (the fixture) hasn’t been published yet, obviously we continue to look at it.”

Teams face each other three times in the 27-round season.

Generally, if a team plays another at home once one season then it will play that team at home twice the following year.

On that basis, Central Coast, Western Sydney, Sydney FC, Wellington and Melbourne Victory are most likely to host the star-studded Melbourne City line-up twice throughout the 2014-15 campaign.

Crosstown rivals Victory stands to gain an immediate financial windfall as it will host the first derby between the two teams clubs, which is expected to be in Round 3.

Either way, a sellout crowd upwards of 50,000 at Etihad Stadium, as opposed to the 45,202 that attended last year’s corresponding game, would be worth tens of thousands of dollars more in ticket sales to the club.

De Bohun said opposition clubs would see the benefits of the potential injection of more stars power into the Melbourne City squad.

“If you look back when Alessandro Del Piero signed and then Emile Heskey and Shinji Ono, I think all of the clubs who played against them firstly appreciated that the football was getting better and secondly appreciated the material impact it had on crowds when they travelled around the country.”

"We will not change the list for a single player signing, however we also will not tell you when the list will be released..... or how long it will take us to rearrange it for Villa"

Assume that will have a few "TBCs" for our home away from home games, right?

Very interested to see our fixtures during CWC. FFA can accommodate the jets being away for 8 weeks but apparently its impossible to do the same for us. Or is that just a line Phoenix club management fed us as an excuse for taking games away?

Only one I think, ChCh and Dorkland are pretty much confirmed. Hoping the 3rd will be the 'tron but New Plymouth and Palmy have been mentioned.

Another game in Napier? I gotta make the first 7 home games to give me the 100. Travelling to Auckland, CHCH and Dunedin are going to make that impossible. Of all times for the friggen cricket to interfere.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

The 80 Days mentioned on twitter...If that is between games in Wellington be guessing it is the Asian Cup break + Cricket World Cup...Something like January 9th til March 30th without a game in Wellington?

Asian Cup finished January 31st, Cricket World Cup have Westpac from Feb 14th I understand, so guess we play away in the weekend in between...

Ernies already angsting here: http://www.fourfourtwo.com/au/news/stupid-early-ki...

“We’re fortunate to be able to play in the A-League from New Zealand and we know it’s always going to be tough with the travel,” Merrick told FourFourTwo.

“But on February 1 in the height of summer we’re playing Brisbane Roar in Brisbane at 3pm.

“I think we’ll all get a sun tan. I don’t know what the thinking is on playing a game in Queensland at 3pm in summer.”

also doesn't sound like we'll get any games during the Asian Cup window...

The 2014-15 campaign will be interrupted by the 2015 Asian Cup which will take place from January 9-31. As a New Zealand-based club, Wellington always face a challenging travelling schedule which will be further increased by the continental tournament.

Merrick acknowledged it wasn’t ideal but felt early kick-offs were the bigger issue given they are avoidable.

“There’s also one stage where we play four games in 11 days, with a turnover of two or three days between games,” Merrick said.

“Fixtures are fixtures, it’s never going to be perfect with the Asian Cup, which is great for Australia to host, all coaches will deal with that, but the Brisbane game is just stupid.”

So the Phoenix don't play in Wellington from start of Jan to about end of March? I know it was about 9 weeks but that seems more.

9 weeks for CWC and 3 more weeks when the entire league breaks for Asian Cup.

And it makes complete sense for the 3 home/away games to be played during that CWC period. Very smart move.

12 weeks. Wow..... Ok the draw may not screw the team over but that's one hell of a way to kill your fan base. Shades of Auckland Warriors and first home game at Mt Smart in round 12?

Woo, I hope the MCFC game is in Auckland, I want to curse those losers right to their faces.

(During CWC will mean probably at NHS, right? Let's pack it out!)

Not the Phoenix's fault that the Stadium is hosting the Cricket World Cup. There is literally nothing better the club could do, they've nailed it playing the three home/away games in that period.

Play Brisbane in Round 15 and then again in Round 16, with the Asian Cup break in between the two games.

The jets stadium is unavailable and they get to play away games during that period. But yeah, given welnix want to play a ridiculous 3 games away from Wellington, it is the best way to go about it.

When is the stadium unavailable? Wondering if they could squeeze a home game in between Asian and World Cups? Or if they gave us the last week before Asian cup and first week after CWC at home to shorten the length of time between home games as much as possible?

4 away games in a row is slightly better than the 8 in a row that we would have needed.
