How did Joachim Rande play? Would be attacking mid field role. He's been in the Nelson College 1st XI the last 3-4 years (from Solomon Isl on scholarship). Quality player. Very fast and one helluva strike. To think that my 15 year old bro was playing alongside him last year, putting him into gaps, is pretty awesome!

Nelson College are average compared to other colleges around the country at football, based on that I don't understand why this guy was playing? surely theres much better talent around even for a one off game against the Victory. I re call another College from Nelson, Nayland College who had Joses Nawo a secondary school nationals MVP a year or two ago and has always had many NZ age grade reps,  why not one of them?

Because the nix can not trail everyone.
and he dosent play for Nelson College anymore, you'd know that if you followed the thread.

Ok, maybe we aren't MAGS or AKl Grammar who buy there team, but we are still a decent side. What you're saying is that a top player who has represented his country shouldn't be allowed the oppurtunity to trial just because he isn't from a top 1st XI. Obviously RH thinks he has the goods. We would have lost that game had it not been for him as he set up Hearfield for the goal

I texted a whole load of updates to Smithy, but he didn't post any of them.

There was no snow around the pitch. It wasn't any colder than Wellington really; though when the sun went over the hill just before 4pm it rapidly got colder.

Can post some photos when I'm back in Wellington.

Reasonable crowd but not huge. It's the same ground where they play NZ cricket in summer. Grandstand was full; banks around the other 2/3 of the oval were sparse though.

McKain warmed up with a large bandage on his leg, but didn't play.

Lineup was
                       Paston
Mulligan    Muscat    Sigmund              Lia
Daniel           Brown   Ferrante                        Mystery trialist wearing #5
               Costa              Hearfield

One triallist played in #5 but then subbed off for the #29 Rande with the dreadlocks.

Rande subbed on late, a black (African?) guy with dreadlocks who set up Hearfield's goal well.

Daniel started, but didn't have such a great game.
I was kinda worse the wear from the night before so won't post ratings.
Mulligan had at least 2 shots; he looks a better left back than right one.
Paston good in goal but took a knock in the face at one  point, stayed on though.

Rojas subbed on for Daniel for the last half hour.

First goal was Nick Ward for Melbourne, kinda scrappy. 60 min mark.

Muscat and Sigmund were good at centre back.

Moss was not there, Langerak was in goal. Melbourne seemed to have a first choice team. Played in white away kit. Ward was Melbourne's best player.

Found 2 Melbourne supporters afterwards who were quite friendly.

Was a fairly even game; neither team had the advantage.

I was pretty happy with the result considering our selections available and considering they were last year's champions.

I wished I'd borrowed the Phoenix banner though!

Pretty sure #5 is Diego, and Rande is a Soloman Islander.

You know we belong together...

#5 was Diego, who was steady but unspectacular. Scott came on for Sigmund (who was immense and made you wonder what might have been at the Confeds Cup). He did ok, apart from being neatly turned by Archie for a shot which Paton saved nicely... still, he wouldn't be the first defender embarrassed by Archie.
My impressions were that the Phoenix did enough to win it, but rued missed chances. Melbourne barely threatened in the first half, and had their goal handed to them after Paston dropped the ball at Ward's feet. I couldn't see clearly from my vantage point, but from the amount of arm flapping going on afterwards I suspect something illegal may have happened in the build-up. Melbourne had two decent chances after that, which Paston dealt with well.
Hearfield's goal came from a neat passing move and was welll deserved.. I'd agree he was MOTM. Costa was also lively, and Rojas was very nippy when he got on. Put in a magnificent ball right on full-time which Costa might well have scored the winner from with a better touch.
Defence was ok until Sigmund went off, then looked a little lost. Manny was very good back there too.
Midfield solid, Tim Brown worked hard and Daniel showed some nice touches before he subbed off.
Attack, given the lack of height, was good. Nice passing between front and back and they looked threatening all game.
All in all, I thought they looked very solid, albeit against oppo who didn't seem to be trying all that hard.

Rande was invited by Johnathon Gould who saw him at an under 19 tournament in Napier last year.I dont think it has anything to do with what school he played for.

Okay nah thats fair enough if a lot of people rate him then good luck to the lad. What I was trying to say was it's surprising a player got picked from a school which was being dominated even just in the Nelson area by a different school and that there could have been better players from Nayland. But he could have been brilliant in an average team vs an above average team. anyway hes finished school so its beyond the point.

What do people think of him? is he a likely signing?

I thought Rande did a real good job for the time he was on. Not only by setting up TH goal but he also opened up the game for the nix attack, drawing defenders and then placing thru decent balls to Coata or TH.

Melbournes goal looked to be a foal on Paston to me. Can't really do much when ya have the ball kicked out of ya hands.

Diago looked flat and i hope its just a fact thats its a new team to him and just need time to settle in, as he just looked like he was out for a jog.

Never rated Diego - only ever stepped up in the ACL and barely ever put 2 consistant performances together in the A-League. Also is made of glass. I hope he does well, though, because without him firing we will be a bit short. valeo2009-06-29 19:22:17

Anyone know who the Phoenix player was who did a haka infront of the victory players while they were waiting at Queenstown airport?

The only two I could think of are Brown or Bertos, the others hardly seem qualified.

He is actually our Head of Commercial Operations and being Maori descent he is more than qualified and did a great job doing the Haka.

Are we allow Hakas for Phoenix games? What does the FFA say about that? Even the American Football (College gridiron tho) allow it, so can we have them in the A-league?? Or would that affect our Australian Club status?

. . . just a thought.

Awesome stuff, a friend of mine told me about it so she couldn't tell the diff between players and staff.

Who was the victory player who came back with a song in reply? Hope it wasn't waltzing matilda...

And yeah good point HN, Plodder looks like he has a bit of warrior gene in him.
