It's frustrating that they asked the All Whites what they thought of his views. Imagine winning and getting all these journos saying "Mahe Drysdale doesn't reckon you deserved it, what do you say to that?"

What a sad embittered little man Mahe Drysdale is, absolutly lost all respect for him now. He is just another sad backward New Zealander.

What a complete lack of class. You don't do sh*t like that when you're a current athlete.

As someone else pointed out, I am the world champion at a sport I made up myself*, so by Drysdale's logic I should have won the Halberg because I'm a WINNER.

I always thought Mahe Drysdale was a good sport. I don't any more. Glad to see the Stuff editorial supported the decision re the All Whites. I liked this:

"An original inscription on the Sportsman of the Year trophy targeted 'personal performances or example which had the most beneficial effect on the advancement of sport in the country'."

This is why the All Whites won. They punched well above their weight in the world cup but, not only that, they inspired a whole new generation of football fans and caught the imagination of the entire country. I'm a journalist in a newsroom full of rugby fans. They don't support the Halberg decision but what they've forgotten is that last winter they weren't talking rugby, they were talking about the All Whites.

What makes me really angry is that people who oppose the win seem to expect the All Whites to defend themselves. Did they make the decision???

You are definately bang on the money.

Although I have to say, Siggy was the right person to ask. After his comments, the rugby heads will have taken a look at him, shat themselves and run back into their little holes to await the disaster that will be the rugby world cup!

Will be a good party though!

We made up a brutal game called scrugby at school. Reigning champs for 5 years, but we never won a halberg. I think it's because we were expected to win, which makes me so bitter and angry that I'll write an Ill informed, narrow minded opinion piece about it.

Our division 5 cricket side also won every game, that's a better record than the all blacks. But not even nominated. It's a joke.

This is a viewpoint I seldom express, but I think I'm safe here because it's a football forum.

I love sport. But ... I HATE RUGBY.

It's boring. And I loathe New Zealand's macho, one-eyed rugby culture.

I wish I could find a way to be far, far from New Zealand during the RWC. I'm already sick and tired of it.

I hope the All Blacks bomb out of the world cup [again].
Here ends today's rant.

That's all well and good but I don't see what that has to do with the halbergs

I don't hate rugby. But I can't help but think a WC win would set all other sports in nz back about 20 years..

It's quite sad because as a Scot living here, I actually want the All Blacks to win the World Cup (if Scotland are unable to...) but the sort of drivel I've been reading lately about these awards is starting to make me want them to fail.

This is the most idiotic comment -
"I think that is poor - a win is a win whether you are the favourite or an outsider."

Clearly if you win as an outsider, it's celebrated in an altogether different manner. This clown should stick to his sport that about 487 people in the world give a flying one about.

You're right - it had nothing to do with the Halbergs. Apologies. I'm sick of being surrounded by rugby heads and was just having a little vent.

Tayler has a stunted memory and a bit of a bloated opinion of his own Halberg.

He won a Commonwealth Games gold.  At the Olympics two years before and two years after his Commonwealth Games win the 10,000m medals were dominated by non-commonwealth athletes;  Lasse Viren (Finland), Emeil Puttemans (Belgium) and Miruts Yifter (Ethiopia) in 1972, and Viren, Lopes (Portugal) and only Foster (who ran the 5000m at the Commonwealth Games) from Britain.

Tayler might have been lucky to make an Olympic final and he has the cheek to bag the AWs

Err - is this the same Burgess that writes investigative work for the Dom Post (too long ago to look up those articles, and frankly can't be @rsed)

Edit: I just realised our one is a David and the Auckland one is a Michael.

I don't hate rugby. I like it as a spectator sport (much more than league). But I hate the way that it's NZ's "national game" and therefore everyone is expected to cheer the All Blacks on, and to want to slit their wrists when they lose. I was actually chuffed when they got knocked out of the last WC because I wanted to see some drunken rugbyheads miserable for a while.

I think I'd settle for some where that didn't give two hoots about rugby. Shouldn't be too hard to find. Now if only I could get six weeks off work!

Hold on... there's been controversy over this?! I haven't noticed. I've been too distracted by some kind of light shining in my eyes to notice anything else... oh, it's the glint of all the Halberg Awards the All Whites won

from Chris Rattue, scroll down a bit as it starts off about Wayne Rooney's goal.

"The All Whites weren't mediocre though, and only an absolute fool would deny they warranted a place in the Halberg finals."
Probably for another thread, but Rattue's take on the coaching and the Paraguay match tactics is right on the mark. Ricki's Halberg should be inscribed with 'OBE'. Other Bastard's Efforts.

So playing an open, attacking game against a vastly better team is a good idea?

Kind of reminds me of when Richard Hadlee [gr8 bowler btw] had a moan about Jerry "I take notes from Glen Turner during the drinks break" Coney.  Wotever's been happening - may it continue.

Wonder what Gosling said to RH there..."Well done for letting Ryan exert total control"???

I didn't say that - and neither did Rattue, and (by implication) his sources, (Nelsen & Elliott).
I was in the stadium and we knew after 25 minutes that we had to score - a change in tactics at some stage was necessary if we were to qualify. That change never came. One shot for glory and Herbert didn't pull the trigger. He was evidently satisfied with a draw, but his senior players wanted to go for a place in the last 16.

So was Ricki in charge or not mate? You don't seem to be able to make up your mind.
