I don't get the disgust over Drysdale's comments. The guy is just voicing his opinion, so what? Do we want all professional athletes to be just gormless idiots who don't say anything? If people aren't allowed to say what they think then why even bother with having interviews at all because they won't tell you anything. (And most athletes at the moment are too worried about being polite that they rarely give off any insight).
Also a fair bit of rugby hate in this thread. Soccer, which is still a minority sport, cannot afford to hold those sentiments here. Why would rugby people respect you (or even the average New Zealander) if you hope that the All Blacks lose? I will repeat again that the vast majority of people in this country got behind the All Whites at last year's World Cup (just because you don't want someone to win an award doesn't mean you don't like or support the sport, FFS) and a lot of those people were rugby people. It would be nice if the vast majority of soccer people could get behind the All Blacks this year, if not because you love sport then for your country because all New Zealanders will be judged on the success of this event.
I don't think it was disgust (at least from my point of view), more disappointment that such an uninformed view is out there in the mainstream sporting press, and amongst sports people. There seems to be a pervading view that every opinion, no matter how ridiculous, deserves respect. To me, the statements that he made serve only to prove him the "gormless idiot" you hope that people speaking out. There is little interest in Mahe's opinion other than showing up how poorly informed many sportsmen and women are when it comes to other codes.
On the other hand, we really shouldn't get so worked up about all of this. The media in NZ is obsessed with 4 sports, Rugby, Netball, Sailing and Rowing. That's just the way it is, was and (probably) always will be. Unsurprisingly, a panel of sportsmen and women favour those sports when dishing out the prizes. Why get so up in arms??
