Just made a big point of thanking Terry during his speech - in fact, he only really thanked AWs players/management and Terry - and a good thankyou too, saying that terry made so much possible with creating the phoenix and giving ricki an opportunity to improve himself as coach in NZ, thus contributing to the AWs success. It was really good and obviously pre-planned by ricki to try and give terry some much-deserved kudos in amongst all the bashing about of his financial situationpaulm2011-02-11 14:08:35

Real trooper, Ricki.  Missed most of the show as I was out but in the restaurant I was at I looked up and there was a TV above the bar with no sound and I saw Tim Brown and a few of the boys up there and nearly fell off my seat.  I'd completely forgotten about the Halbergs.

Was channel surfing during the ads and I saw them walking up to the stage.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Didn't we beat Serbia in the build up? That was 2010 right?

Or was that a draw?

We did beat Serbia, 1-0, remember Vidic having to calm the crowd down.

This whole thing is turning into world war 3!  Some people really need to get a grip.

From our story: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=10705592

"Winning is not explicitly mentioned in the voting criteria, said Halberg Trust CEO Steve Hall."

And:

"[The judges] must decide which team showed the most "sporting excellence" during the last year, using criteria including whether a team's achievements were made on a world stage against high-quality opposition."

Case closed.

What really annoys me though is all the anger from people about the AW's winning. As well as Andrew Mulligan asking Mark Paston "you know this is a rugby nation not soccer"  FFS Andrew we're tired of the football v rugby debate.  And what's with Steven McIvor telling Ricki his team lost yesterday.  Both of them disrespectful.

The Ricky Gervais effect.  Notice how much John Key resembles David Brent whenever he sees a camera at a non-political event?

Whoa!!!!
just been looking at some of the sports blog sites around the place. Some people are foaming at the mouth over the AW's success. Its especially disappointing to see some sports "journo's" ignorant predjudices coming out.
The above chart fairly well shows the global nature of football and puts into perspective the AW's success.
I hope the RWC is a great success for the country but reading some of the vitriol spewing out against the AW's by some rugbyheads is really making me question supporting the thing.

What gets me is the head in the sand approach. As much as we love them netball, rugby and rowing are small change globally. The last rugby World cup final game in France in 2007 had a global TV audience of 18 million(sauce....L'Equipe, French sports daily)

All this hyperbole about the RWC being the 3rd biggest sporting event on the planet is crap.

Anyway....well done to Rickie and the boys....it was a just and deserved honour.

To all those other dickheads whinging.....Suck this !!!! suck very hard !!! (as Mr Maradonna was famously quoted)

dont listen to telfer but credit to the man going on what others have been saying
gave his opinion that he didnt believe the AWs should win, but when they did he graciously congratulated them and didnt whinge like a pathetic loser

Actually what i heard from Telfer was him saying ti was awfully close for him and he almost had to toss a coin to decide between AWs and ABs and he could understand how others went for the AWs.

Only heard the last 20-30 mins of it but something along the lines of "How can you measure what sporting achievement is more important unless we have some sort of weighting system devised by Einstein and Newton". Not exact words (he didn't Einstein or Newton) but you get the jist.

It was quite funny as one minute he said he wasn't at all bitter then suddenly jumped into this sarcastic rant with a fellow caller. Immature much?

Three for me, and two for them.

Yep, I've changed stations.  He's said many a time he's not a huge fan of football.  Shame, I do normally enjoy listening to him.  Goran's better IMO.

Did Miles get any angry calls?

As a side I wonder how difficult it was to get Sepp Blatter to make that video for Sky.  I bet a few bucks had to change hands.  Amazing they got him.  That to me means if he gives his time, then our achievement made ripples in the football world.  I looked him up on twitter and guess (out of the 28 people) who he is following - John Key

Nah, has to be Stevo's picture of Dadi's penalty miss against Perth.

a comment on Stuff
Twenty years ago I invented a new sport and I have been the world champions at it for the last twenty years. I will be world champion next year as well as I have yet to share the rules to this sport with anyone else. I am disgusted that these awards have not recognised a World Champion for the last ten years, they should be backing winners

Dick Tayler should remember that he won the supreme award when he only won a gold medal at the 2nd class Commonwealth Games, not at the Olympics.

Dick is a very intelligent and thoughful person.

I have sent an email to invite him to have a discussion over an Emmerson's.
Should be an interesting conversation.
