I'm just glad I'm going to be able to sleep tonight. I'd have been in a rage if it didn't go well for football (and particularly if those rowers got anything).

Fuck this stupid game

My respect for the Halberg's has now risen from zero to just above zero.

Fantastic evening!!!

Supreme, oh so supreme.

They should have used Facetime instead of Skype.

Judges thought they were voting on Coach of the Year, where they knew to vote for Richie

But in all fairness, Richie McCaw is a class act - and that's coming from a Wallabies supporter. I wanted Nelsen to win too, but losing to McCaw is hardly robbery.

Player of the year 3 times in a row, even in a sport such as rugby (which I despise) is pretty decent.

Excellent that Winston got the peoples choice or whatever it is called. Shows that football both motivated sports public at large, but also that football fans got in behind the awards and voted in enough numbers to win. Watching his goal again on the website tonight still sent a shiver up my spine and brought tears to my eyes. Brilliant.

Although we had grabbed a few Halbergs now, I think that the most important award for the sport would be the "Best Moment Award" because it is the public's choice and the best way to promote the sport overall. If the sport is able to consistently be in the headlines and win the "Best Moment Award" then the sport would appeal to the young up and comers especially if they are deciding which sport to play in. However it is up to the parents and the clubs at grassroots level to enhance the sporting experience.

Fascinating to see in the Christchurch Press an article saying that Nelsen should have won the award ahead of Richie McCaw.

That will have the locals spluttering in their cornflakes

Eh, can't begrudge McCaw. That's just letting our bias go a little too far.

I was disappointed that Ryan missed out, he's probably never going to win, whereas Ritchie will win it next year when the AB's win the world cup.  I personally thought he was more deserving of a win than AW's winning team and Ricki winning coach.

What really annoys me though is all the anger from people about the AW's winning. As well as Andrew Mulligan asking Mark Paston "you know this is a rugby nation not soccer"  FFS Andrew we're tired of the football v rugby debate.  And what's with Steven McIvor telling Ricki his team lost yesterday.  Both of them disrespectful.

I'm starting to get really pissed off hearing the phrase .."but they didn't win a game"

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I'm stoked for the All Whites.  I felt that either Nelsen or Marshall deserved the Sportsman Of The Year award, and I probably would have gone with Shanks for Sportswoman Of The Year.

Me too.

After hearing about 5 mins of talkback this morning and reading a few online comments i feel similar to paulm. Why are football fans being made to feel bad about this? It isn't our fault. We are just celebrating our teams achievements.

I know you could say don't worry about what anyone else thinks but it leaves a bit of a sour taste in my mouth, which is unfortunate.

Three for me, and two for them.

20Legend, your 'infograph' is quite clearly wrong.

No mention of rugby world cup or rowing world championships amongst most-watched sports.

I know, I know, its serious!

i know it apparently doesnt count as it was in '09, but i was at the bahrain game, and I was also at the ABs win over South Africa at the stadium - which was probably their flagship home victory out of that winning run

Both were memorable nights but one was SO much better than the other, and carried SO much more weight

This year is rugby's world cup, last year was football's, why cant the egg-chasers just shut up, win their own cup this year, and then sweep the halbergs?

Best comment on that stuff thread was from someone who appeared to be neutral when they said;

"We were debating this yesterday, general concensus was that the netballers preformance in 2010 was pretty average. the all blacks had a great year, won all but one game and got the europeen grand slam. Soccer qualified for the world cup (first time since 1982 i believe - we may be wrong), then went to the world cup and raised the profile and passion for soccer in New Zealand and made a few people around the world look at NZ soccer in a whole new light. Nothing the all blacks did this year changed the perveption of them within the country or their sporting community.
the debate ended with us deciding that the ab's would get it if it was purely on paper preformance, however if a broader range of things were considered then the all whites had the most effect on their sport last year."

I'm already pissed off at the idiot journalists and the ignorant general public who don't seem to realise the point of the Halbergs is to:

"honour those whose personal performances (now extended to teams and coaches), or example, has had the most beneficial effect on the advancement of sport in the country"

Surely people should know this by now, it stuns me that for example the article in the Herald; the journalist in question says in his opening "The Halbergs recognise excellence..." no they f*cking don't, you useless p.o.s journalist.

Telfer actually made me laugh this morning. Didn't hear anything else he had to say, but at the start of his show he was congratulating the AWs on the win, even though he didn't vote for them, and having a go at the "rugby boofheads" who were complaining about it. Jag2011-02-11 09:44:31
