So has the bubble burst for New Zealand football?
lets have a look at what has happened.
No Auckland team at the FIFA world club championship..
Wellington Phoenix (1 out of 18) on the road, Home attendances down nearly 50 per cent
All Whites now out side the top 50.
when was the last time they actualllly won a match, over 600 minutes since they last won, I believe Sebia was the last result, then lost to Austria, Slovenia, and Chile
When was the last time they scored more than two goals? Not since Fiji I think again over 10 hours of football. not including the eruopean friendlies in May.
I think the record is in the last five matches scored 3 conceded 5
When was the last time an All White scored a hattrick? any one since Rikki has been in charge?
When was the last time a Phoenix player scored a hattrick? if any?
Two interesting facts which aligns with the state of play.
New Zealand world cup 14 shots at goal in 3 matches so much for three strikers!!! North Korea did better
Wellington Phoenix have the lowest shots at goal stat in the A league. Last season one of the highest!
hard facts but verifiable ones for you statistical maestros.
I say prove me wrong!

Quiet day is it UR? Teachers on strike again?
You seem to have a rather sad history of starting inflammatory and baseless threads which quickly get locked. Can't see this one being any different.
My favourite part is how you relate hat-tricks to bubbles bursting. You're right - how can any side claim to be great if none of its players are regularly scoring hat-tricks? That's what counts for sure. Spain - dreadful at the World Cup because no-one in their side got a hat-trick. Take the WC off them I say.

Ah, but here is the REAL question, were the wheels ever on in the first place? We need to have a real clutch on things before we can get to full gear.
We will never fully decide who has won the football.

so what your saying is if we had all these things occuring we'd have won the world cup?? or the wheel son the bus would be moving?

Plus there seems to be a god damn storm blow in to town every time the phoenix play. Crowds are pretty obviously going to be down.
Rugby union conspiracy i say. Theyve hired a witch to do rain dances every nix home game.

Gee, this is a depressing thread UR. You need a drink.
There are some concerning signs with the Nix at the mo but it's hardly the end-of-the-world scenario for football that you paint.
And re: All Whites, since when was being just outside the top 50 a negative???
Also, pays to get your facts right chief, I don't recall a match against Austria this year, or in the past decade for the matter.
Hopefully a Nix player scores a hat-trick next week, given that seems to be the measure of a club's success

More facts proving that the wheels have fallen off
NZ or WP doesn't have a player nominated for the Ballon D'or
We haven't produced a Zidane like player since forever
WP hasn't won the UCL in years
We haven't made a 20mil+ player purchase in years (also we missed buying Mesut Ozil)
and our AW qualification for Euro 2012 is going terrible

Clearly the Nix are goneburgers and we won't have a national team in four years time. Why even bother?

well lets look at the attendance average 7.5k this year 11.6 k last year.
In the preworld cup camp in Austria who did we play? and what were the results.
No it is not a negative thread but a look at the bare facts.
This is not UCL and 20 million pounds would buy the entire A league.
The Phoenix last year played some really good football and the results justified the great finals run.
And to the moron who mentioned Spain and hatricks has to be a moron or an Arsenal fan or from Kelburn but there is no difference.
My comment was aimed at the lack of a true goal scorer in either the Phoenix or All White team.
Take a look at the away record...some of these games the Nix lost rather than the opposition winning.
last year we drew these matches thus collecting a point and denying the opposition two points..
That aint happening this year.......
Me I enjoy watching the Nix and have not missed a game since their inception.
As a team they have to take the good with the bad....

It's just we're so good we don't need away points to win the league.

Three goals last scored away to Jordan (Smeltz 2, Fallon 1). That was a month or two before the Manama game.
Since Jordan we have played Bahrain, Bahrain, Australia, Serbia, Slovenia, Chile (not sure if this even an official match), Slovakia, Italy, Paraguay, Honduras, Paraguay.
The lowest ranked of those sides was Bahrain (approx 60 at the time), Honduras were 51 and the rest were top 30, including Italy who were 5th at the time I think. The only team ranked behind us at the time of playing them was Honduras.
The results of those matches were 2 wins, 5 draws, 4 losses. That is probably the best run of form in the history of NZ football!
Phoenix are having a bit of a 'mare at the moment though. That i will concede.

The Phoenix have 1 point less this season (11 pts) than after the same number of games last season (12 pts).
And the key reason for that is that it was Round 11 last season when they beat GCU 6-0.

Well as someone who hasn't missed a Phoenix game since their inception, you have a very short memory in terms of their goal-scoring.
After ten games last season (where you'll remember (I hope) they made it to the prelimnary final), the Phoenix had 10 points, had scored 9 goals and were third-bottom.
After ten games this season they had 12 points, had scored 14 goals and were in a playoff spot.
Crikey, the wheels really have fallen off this season, haven't they?
Don't quote "facts" when they're just made up to suit your negativity.
Odd too, that as someone who hasn't missed a game since their inception you've only decided to post on here in the last month and with a negative slant.

In what possible way did North Korea do better?

I arrived in NZ in 1992 now that was a bleak footballing landscape, maybe you should look at things from a slightly more historical perspective and move a way from the quick hand job mentality you seem to adhere to at the moment ,things even at this low point are a proverbial rose garden compared to then !!
I think the benefit of the recent successes will come through in the next five to ten years given the upsurge in the sports popularity particularly with" di yoof ",its the most popular participant team sport with kids by far ,a lot of this growing popularity can be attributed to the Phoenix and All Whites coverage in the media !
I'm not sure if you (Ultra Red) are a fair weather fan who likes stirring it ,an egg chasing John Kirwan type or even worse an Aussie!!

You can't expect us to get huge crowds, win every game, get hat tricks, ect.
New Zealand isn't like Germany, or Spain, or England.
We're not a huge football nation (though we like to think we are),
and we're not exceptionally skillfull.
Suck it up and be happy with what we have.

I disagree. We should be working to improve the game, not just being satisfied with what we've achieved so far.

Wellington Phoenix have the lowest shots at goal stat in the A league. Last season one of the highest!
Forget about results, I just hope the nix can get that all important shots at goal stat up as much as possible in the next couple of games...
Pointless stats, pointless topic.

the 2009/10 season was a stellar season for both the WP and the AW. Just because the current season is not as good as that previous on was doesn't mean the wheels have fallen off. This time last year, the Phoenix were mid-table and the AW had just had a 0-0 draw with Bahrain. Good things take time, and it is definately too early in the season to make any calls about the state of the game in NZ. It is still better than ever before.

I think Ultra red is just suffering from something similar to post coital blues......
when you are down after a big up!!!!
The last 12 months have been the most exciting, thrilling succesful period in NZ football....the Bahrain qualifiers the WC qualification, Auckland City at the World club comp, the rise and rise of the Nix in last seasons playoffs, full stadiums, saturation media coverage, the totally unexpected overachievement of the AW's at the WC.
It was an amazing ride.....its over, so now its back to the A-League. Its not surprising people feel a little flat. But just think how far we have come in such a short period.
Its still early days for this years A-League for the Nix. We have been top 6 for most of the season...we have scored loads of goals. We just need to tweek a few things, get the defense working and we will be there when we reach the business end of the season.
As Mrs Zinidane keeps saying....theres no point in getting too excited too early!!!!!
