Ifill or Smeltz

Ifill easily.

I don't understand how Smeltz scores so often.  He doesn't have amazing pace, tricky moves, height, muscle or anything.  I think he manages through positioning and heading ability.
His conversion rate is usually ridiculous. Remember for large parts of his time at the Nix he was averaging more than a goal every two shots. For every three or four shots he was taking, two were goals. No one in this league (even Ifill) comes close to that.
Ifill has tricks, heading ability, positioning, pace (at times) etc.  All round a better player.

That is true.

Yeah Smeltz needs someone to feed him, give him a ball and he'll do the rest.

I wonder . . . who has the hottest WAG? Ifill and Smeltz??

*Despite Smeltz's WAG being an Aussie (you can forgive her for moving to the west island because we then would got Ifill).*

I suppose that if Smeltz hadn't left then Ifill wouldn't have arrived???  Ifill does more for the team I think but Smeltz did a fantastic job and he scored my favourite Nix goal.

His header in the 2-0 victory over Newcastle (from a Hearfield cross) was outstanding.  Simply superb, but many people seem to overlook it for other, not nearly as good goals, such as the header against Perth in our 3-0 victory from a Lia cross.

Off topic. But kinda on topic.

2009/10

2-1 v Glory (Bertos, Ifill)
1-1 v Adelaide (Ifill)
1-1 v North Queensland Fury (Bertos)
0-0 v Mariners
3-0 v Jets (Brown, Greenacre, Ifill)
6-0 v Gold Coast United (Daniel 2, Brown, Greeacre, Ifill)
1-1 v Glory (Ifill)
1-1 v Victory (Brown)
3-1 v Brisbane Roar (Dadi 2, Brown)
3-0 v Fury (Dadi, Ifill, McKain)
3-0 v Mariners (Ifill 2, Brown)
1-1 v Glory (Greenacre)
3-1 v Jets (Ifill, Brown, Dadi)

2010/11

3-3 v Gold Coast (Greenacre 2, Ifill)
2-0 v Mariners (Bertos, Ifill)
2-1 v Sydney FC (Ifill, Ward)

Ifill has scored 12 goals at the RoF- from a possible 16 games. That's a hell of a record. Has he missed any home games? How does his home record compare with Smeltz's at the RoF? How bout away? LF1 I'm looking at you here...

Like the Nix- amazing home record- not so good away...

I bet he has a considerable number of assists too, didn't he prettymuch run that 6-0 game himself?

Smeltz had a similar record. In season 2 he failed to score away from home apart from penalties.

Ifill hasn't missed a Nix match since arriving at the club, started all of them.

Ah but Smeltz has played at the World Cup finals - and scored against defending world champions Italy

On last seasons form I would say Ifill, no-one could get near him. He's not been in the same class this year though so would have to say Smeltz on this seasons form (not that I've seen Smeltz play recently)

Well, the players voted Smeltz 1st and 2nd in Johnny Warren medal stakes - and he was also twice golden boot and 3rd in his other season (when Phoenix finished last). That is bloody good.

OK, here are some comparisons...

Smeltz played 39 games and scored 21 goals (a goal every 1.85 games)

Ifill has played 37 games and scored 16 goals (a goal every 2.31 games)

At home, Smeltz played 20 games and scored 15 goals (a goal every 1.33 games)

At home, Ifill has played 18 games and scored 12 goals (a goal every 1.5 games)

Away, Smeltz played 19 games and scored 6 goals (a goal every 3.16 games)

Away, Ifill has played 19 games and scored 4 goals (a goal every 4.75 games)

Smeltz scored 11 of his goals (52%) in wins, 6 goals (26%) in draws and 4 goals (22%) in losses.

Ifill has scored 13 of his goals (81%) in wins and 3 of his goals (19%) in draws.  In other words, when Ifill scores, the Phoenix never lose.

I think Smeltz is better and i like Smeltz more because he has done more for NZ football. But Ifill is still a very good player.

Three for me, and two for them.

Ifill - creative with the ball (when he isn't being double teamed).

Also moved his family half way around the world and didn't bolt after 5 days. (despite being mugged by crazy cat woman on the first day).

Ifill for me for sure, because when Ifill is on form the whole team performs better.

Smeltz is a great striker but gets a lot of tap-ins, whereas when Ifill is on form he creates more space, more opportunities, and allows other players more opportunities as well as himself.

Right now, Smeltz.

When Ifill is back in form, Ifill obviously.

That is exactly what I was after. Cheers LF1.

Amazing just how different the goals at home vs goals away stat is. While I am keeping in mind that we have a very different team with Iffy than we did with Smeltz, it's quite a record to have never lost when Ifill scores.

we really need to start looking for a younger version of him now.....doesn't have to be an english import, jsut an attacking midfielder who can actually move with the ball at his feet plus has the ability to shoot/pass with both feet.

I thought that Jemal Johnson guy looked great.  Nothing came of his attempts in the USA so maybe he'd be keen to come to NZ?

EDIT: Based on one or two youtube clips.

Ifill to set them up, and Smeltz to bang them in.

Just out of interest, who would you rather have in your team?

Ifill is really lazy at times only when he is not getting the ball or getting bored but Smeltz will leave straight away when there is an offer just $1 more..so i would stick to Ifill

Yeah I would say its all in jest Tony. Its quite well known that you didn't actually walk out on us. Its because of the respect that you earned in the football community here and the work you did in creating our club that we feel we can have a laugh with you. If you didn't matter, you wouldn't have a tag.
