Engelaar the league's only genuine marquee quality player (Ono maybe).
He has certainly made an impact and you wonder how Heart would shape if he had been there from the start. Would Aloisi still have been there? You have to feel for him a little.

Nutpuncher didn't make much of an impact for the Jets. Still diving though. Perhaps an interview for a future podcast? Why did he punch the linesman in the nuts?
Is Broich a marquee for Brisbane. I'd definitely put him up there.
And ADP has raised the profile of the A League a lot, so from that point of view at least he's added value. Not sure whether it's 4 mill value but...
You are half right.

Kewell is horse. /argument
Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
The last time Kewell was any good was when he was at Leeds.
Well I really don't have the conviction to argue that Kewell is any good, I'll say that he isn't really bad. I mean earlier in the season when he was playing he made Heart look a bit better than when he wasn't there.
That said with the amount of game time he has had in recent times, his injuries, form and how much he asks for any club would be crazy to sign him. He should really retire.

The pod moves studios to analysis Wellington Phoenix FCcomeback win over Central Coast Mariners, chat about the launch of the FFA Cup and a potential visit from West Ham, and review the rest of round 20 action. Locally, Exodus Team Wellingtonclaims second, and potentially an O-league, spot, while the YoungFootball Ferns qualify for the U20 World Cup.
When you were saying how rubbish all of the marquees were I was thinking "what about Engelaar", lucky someone (Hard News I think) eventually got there and mentioned him. He has been immense. Huge man, and had a very very good playing CV. While not a big name, I had heard of him before, and he's the exact type of marquee you want.

If he stays fit - and that is a big if - he could be one of he best, no doubt.
Definitely knew who he was before he came because of his Euro 2008 experience.

This week in the pod, the team tries to dissect the capitulation in Adelaide, previews Wellington Phoenix FC next home games against Perth Glory and looks back at the week that was, including a silent protest in Sydney's west. As the All Whites prepare for their first fixture of the year, the pod discusses (read: argues) it's relevance, while Exodus Team Wellington and Auckland City Football Club each have a foot in the ASB Premiership final.
Puissant? formica rufa (no relation)?
Its all part of the healing... cheers lads
good pod lads. yea its been a very somber time since Thursday.
for the intro you could clip together some of the ridiculous comments commentators have said during our games... wait that may take up most of the pod...
in terms of the AW match, you can look at it that Neil is on a hiding to nothing, or you can look at it as he has a chance to prove himself which no other coach in the running has(unless for some reason Ricki chucks his CV in there). and the players which will most likely be our team going forward get another match together. And I think the main reason the game is being played is because we promised to reschedule the match that was postponed due to the earth quake(?) or something from a few years back
Loved the (heated) discussion about the worth of the Japan game. We should really take any opportunity to get free international exposure...if only to get some youngsters a chance to get experiance at this level. However I agree that it is hard to get excited about this game.
Not surprised that Smith and Reid pulled out...this game has a wiff of classic NZF bungling all over it. The appointed coach has made a very public statement about how he did not want the job, was not ready for it and NZF go "its your anyway". What sort of message does that send to the players? The gaffer would rather not be there. This has train smash all over it. Its a very very strong Japanese team playing at home and we have a understrength, ill prepared side with a coach who does not want the job. What benefit does a major drubbing do for young players? what benefit will it do for the image of NZ football?

Wow that was the most negative spin on an All Whites game ive ever listened to, and it hasnt even started yet.

I don't think that this is a case of Neil not wanting to be there at all. Its much like Greenacre at the Phoenix. Neil came out and said he felt he was not ready for it yet but would like it one day
I view that as being open and honest about knowing where your own coaching career and development is at. I am sure he wants the job but wanting the job AND being ready for it, are two different things. I had young chiros working for me that wanted the practice managers role but simply were not ready for it.
I think not wanting to be there is incorrect. Ryan and a few others came out after London Olympics and said that they really enjoyed what he did as a coach which I took as a bit of a dig at Ricki as well. I think the players know him, he definitely coaches an attacking style of football and gives youth every chance. It may not be his time yet but I suspect he will give it his best.

OK...there is some good counter arguements to my post. But answer me this question. If you were a boss of a company would you give a job to someone who said they were not ready for it? Because I wouldn't.....I would give it someone who was fired up to make their mark. This sort of thing would never happen in Australian football......there would be hell raised...it would be seen as loser-ism. To me this is classic NZF.....half arsed, compromising, wimpy, ill prepared.
Nothing personal about Emblem...he was honest about where he's at. He could well be a good international coach one day( Actually TV3 reported pre match that he does not have the tickets to be full time AW coach at the moment)
I suspect we will have to disagree on this point.
No I do agree with you.
If the guy comes out and says 'I'm not ready' then you don't offer him the job plain and simple. You also have to consider this: Sometimes, the people that sit above you can see talent in you that you can't in yourself and say 'here you go' - Wynton Rufer - Spain 82 as an example.
The only time you would is when you can go 'well this guy is a lot better than he rates himself so yes we will'. I don't think that's necessarily the case in this instance but I do believe that he has filled a hole while they finish their review and looking for a permanent gaff.
It might be after that game, he changes his tune and decides he does want it.
I do think we are on the same page.
Grumpy old bastard alert
JV can you shed any light on the TV3 report that said that Emblen doesn't have the tickets to be senior AW coach....True or False?
Do you know if Ramon has the qualifications?
Actually I was wrong about the value of the Jap game. We did find out about quite a few players and their ability to stand up in a tough international.
I don't know what NZF requirements are but I can confirm he has none.
No idea about Ramon sorry.
Grumpy old bastard alert
I think the fuck ups come from the next level above Emblem to be fair. The usual NZFA lets do it disorganised mentality. Still Fred would have it all under control.
V104 of #InTheZone is out & available at www.yellowfever.co.nz/podcasts.
The pod comes together once again to discuss Wellington Phoenix FC butchering chances, and 3 points, against Perth Glory, tantys from Hernandez and Stadium security, and the pigeon's return. The All Whites recover from an appalling start to save face against Japan, while Exodus Team Wellington book a place in the O-league and the ASB Premiership final.
Just a correction for Boxey. VfB drew with bottom of the table Braunschweig 2-2, 8 losses and draw in last 9 games. They are onto their 3rd coach for the season.
Yes, you're right. I think when I was checking the scores they were leading 2-1 but the game hadn't finished yet, and I assumed that to have been the final score without actually checking.

Can I just say the latest podcast is one of the best ever and the four hosts are all super-talented.

Needed more ASB Youth League finals preview.. (not that anyone outside of Nelson-Marlborough probably care)
