Maybe I have missed something, but why - given everyone seems to agree that the 'Nix need an extra striker - haven't I seen Jeremy Brockie's name bandied around as a possible signing?  He did well for Auckland in the A-league and seems to be banging them in for the Oly-Whites.

He spent a season at Sydney that can best be described as dissapointing, I think people are giving him some space to rebuild his confidence and things before seeing if he can step up again.

He has played for the Phoenix in a number of the local pre-season matches they played so Ricki is watching.

he seems to have had a pretty good oly whites campaign banging them in pretty consistently - maybe the spell at hawkes Bay has rekindled his passion and helped him find some form, i think before signing him for the nix though, you would need to consider letting one of costa or drapes go as you wouldnt want 3 young kiwi strikers all warming pine

Maybe someone could help here, but isn't there something to be said about Costa and Draper missing the initial squad to China, yet a great deal of these other youth players at the Olympics are playing the NZFC? Should the Phoenix be looking more closely at Brockie and Elhenson?
I would presume there is more promise in Brockie than Draper for example

Tough to say really, I would love to see Brockie at the 'Nix (my Nelson City team used to get tonked by his Suburbs club on a regular basis) but I'd worry that he wouldn't get enough action. I believe his more natural position is in the hole rather than as an out and out striker, which puts him into competition with our holy trinity as well as Troy Hearfield and Adam Kwasnik. Could be hard to get game time and for somebody who has more promise than at least Draper warming the bench for the 'Nix might not actually be such a good idea.

Ellensohn (certainly) and Brockie (possibly) are too old to be in the three youth spots at the club.

Last season Brockie was coming off a bad year in Sydney so would not have been considered and Ellensohn was older, the club had gone for Brockie and Draper and obviously wich to stand by them while they are still of an age to use the Youth spots.

I think he is definatly worth having a good look at.. Some of his goals have been very well taken

And he's still only 20

I always wondered why Brockie never kicked on in his career. He did well in Auckland. Some nice set up plays from him. Thanks HN, for the update on his career since then. Hope he does make a comeback, lots of potential.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

That was a smashing goal he scored, and he worked very hard as well He's a talented lad, and damn near won it for us last night.
I think the adulation he got at Auckland went to his head and the experience at Sydney brought him back to earth again.
The lad looks like he is maturing, and I'd like to see him get another shot.

He's got a future, quiet happy watching him as the play maker at the Knights.  Did get annoyed that he seemed easily niggled by the others, but that's an age thing.
The question is, does he go off the boil too easily when he doesn't play?

Just watched that goal again and had visions of the him either bursting through onto a Ferrante through ball or collecting a Smeltz knockdown with his pace and hammering it in. On reflection I think he could perhaps bring us some useful qualities. Sign him before anyone else does! KTBW2008-08-08 14:57:54

I'd give him another season or so or at least wait till the next transfer window. He's certainly revived himself but he did come out of a pretty crap season with Sydney as has been mentioned. If its true that he plays more in the hole then I think we should look else where, we need someone who's going to play right up on the box, an Inzaghi type player I reckon.

I hate the fact that all the Kiwi's in the league are with the Phoenix, so I hope another a-league club snaps him (and others from our Olympic squad) up.

Probably because he, like all the others would take an import slot at any other club.

More NZ players the better for me.

We need a forward who'll be able to make immediate impact this season in HAL, and I don't think that Brockie could do that at this stage.

Should definitely be looked at for next season though if he keeps progressing.

And what would be the result if the Nix went the same way as the Knights?

Only 4 New Zealanders in a squad of 21 ?

I suspect you don't remember the Knights squads.

Talking about the Nix.  Where the numbers resembles about 10 I think.

I don't understand at all  then.

Last seasons best players were almost all the New Zealanders in the side, why would the number of New Zealanders have any imapct and make us worse ?

If there are two players for a spot of similar ability and one is a New Zealander and one an Australian we should sign the New Zealander, and that is (quite rightly) what we have done.

A sizeable chunk of the Knights problems were related to exactly that point, a lack of New Zealanders who were among the few players at the club that showed some spine and heart.

People seem to have forgotten his bad misses at the under 20 WC in Canada 2007, a couple of which (vs Portugal and Mexico from memory) were backyard sitters.
Having said that, it's good to see him back with confidence and starting to again fulfill some of his undoubted potential.
Isn't it funny how now whenever a non-Phoenix player does well the club seem to be criticised for not having signed them?
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

What I'm saying is that we need to spread Kiwi's around the a-league.  Currently we have 10 or so Kiwi's in one team and none in any other.  If anything happened to the Nix then there'd be 10 Kiwi pro-footy players out of work.

has anyone noticed that probably because of the trial and error used by the Knights, there is now only 1 english player in the league (James Robinson-Perth) an he is average at best anyway.

just something to ponder

But like HN said, NZ players count as imports for the Ozzie clubs, so they have to compete with a much bigger potential signing base than if being looked at by the Nix.

And with Australia and NZ still being in two different confederations, this is unlikely to change until that situation changes.

Yeah I know about that, but I'd still rather Kiwi's at other clubs (more difficult I know), that's all I was saying.

i think we all agree that it would be great if kiwis were spread across the league

i'm sure that if they could perth would've kept bertos, but of course his contract ended and there was a club in his home town, the fact is, if an aussi team wants a kiwi, he has to be worth an import spot, and no kiwi good enough to take an overseas spot at an aleague club wouldn't see the phoenix as their first choice

Yes only 20, he may even reach the Premier League one day, I remember hearing on the news a while ago that his plans when he signed with Sydney were to play 2 years for them and then try to get a contract with a Premier League side, of course that has changed but he could be still considering the Premier League since he is so young.

I think Brockie could end up in the states in the next year, he's unlikely to get a spot with the Nix and less likely to get one at any other A-League club. On the issue of kiwis at Aussie clubs, if the OFC/AFC thing gets sorted out the Australian clubs will be after talented kiwi players, we saw that before the rules changed.
