League Table 2012/13 - The Pathetic Thread

I can't believe we've scored the same amount as brisbane!  WSW have now scored 19 goals as well.  Worryingly we have hardly scored goals at home (9 so far).

We have 4 games left at home (in Wellington), 2 games away but in NZ.  Can we get 18 points from those games?

Not a chance. If we dont beat Newcastle we'll be lucky to win any of those 6 games!

It hurt to add seven goals to our GA column.

Well goal difference only really matters if your tied with someone. Yeah, I'm clutching at straws.

And only if you are tied with someone in the top 6. No chance.

As bad as we all feel, imagine how the Glory fans are right now especially with some of the talent they have in their team.

Roar fan's are not that happy either and it is a strong possibility they will lose today. Least we are not the only angsty ones atm.

Especially considering they have the 3rd best defensive record in the league.

I think thats ambitious. I think 6 against the Jets and Sydney are on. Maybe a draw from Perth. The way WSW are playing, I expect nothing. 7 would be realistic.
I agree with both of you. 7 is realistic, 8+ is ambitious, but in terms of our season we need to aim for 10. I wouldn't say no to 12 points though!
that 3 points from the jets doesnt look so easy now

rojas, so special

At least they can watch replays of the past 2 grand finals to cheer themselves up though.

The top 4 appear to be out of sight for the rest of the league. Still have a feeling that Adelaide are impostors among that lot though.

I've added playoff thresholds from previous seasons, defined as the number of points scored by the team that finished 7th.

So on the balance of probabilities we need more than 18 points to qualify. 7 wins would do that.

We have 6 games at home.

It wasn't that long ago that we put together a streak of over 30 wins at home.

Our destiny is still very much in our own hands.

The defence and attack can be wrangled into form. The big issue is the midfield.

If you are reading this and you are a creative midfielder who could hold their own in the A league, and you are currently unknown to the Phoenix... well now is the time to make your way to Wellington and ask Chris Greenacre for a trial.

The fact that have won 10 games might suggest that they are not.

A win as a win, but the manner of their wins has been much different to the other three.

Disagree. Our back 6 are dysfunctional, not just our midfield.

I don't think we won 30 games in a row at home...undefeated perhaps.

After 17 games...

07/08 - DLLWDWLLLLWLDDLWD - 17pts - WLLL - 20 pts (21 games)

08/09 - DLLDLWDWLLWWWLDWL - 22 pts - WLDL - 26 pts (21 games)

09/10 - LWDLDDDDDDWLWDWLD - 21 pts - LDWWWLLWWW - 40 pts (27 games)

10/11 - DWLLWDLWLDLLWLLWD - 19pts - LWLWDWLWLWWLW - 41 pts (30 games)

11/12 - DWLLLDDWLWWLWLWLW - 24pts - WWWLLWWDLL - 40 pts (27 games)

12/13 - WDDLLLWDWLLDWLLLL - 16 pts

Sorry, bit late this week. Just got back from camping.

I'm sure you have all been waiting anxiously to find out that this is indeed... the worst season ever.

Funnily enough, 3 points next week would put us back within 2 points of what many consider to be our best season ever - 09/10 (and also equal with 10/11 when we finished 6th).

So...

Don't stop believin'!!!

This whole past season points thing is irrelative. Doesn't take into account other teams points/position/form. Rather pointless. A+ for effort.

It's not irrelevant (i think that's what you meant to type) at all. Yes, it doesn't take the other teams into account, but it gives a nice idea of how we are going compared to our previous seasons. We all know that we aren't guaranteed to finish fourth if we score the same number of points as last year.

well done, so not as bad as this season, but proves the point that we finish the season strongly.

Season 09/10:

Thanks Patrick, that's awesome. 09/10 is the one I'm really interested in.

I've actually realised that Round 18 would be a better comparison but no matter, I can tell you what happened.

In Round 18 of 09/10 Brisbane and us lost, and NQF and Adelaide won. Ahead of us the Jets won and CCM and Perth lost.

What that meant was that although we stayed in 7th place on the table on 21 pts, NQF also had 21 and Brisbane and Adelaide had 20pts. Ahead of us the Jets were on 25, CCM on 24 and Perth on 23. In other words, it was a real dog-fight with the bottom 6 teams separated by only 5 pts.

Back to this season, if we beat the Jets this week we will be in almost the same position. The Jets will stay on 21 pts. The Heart are away to WSW and could easily stay on 21/22 pts. Sydney are away to the Victory and could easily stay on 20/21 pts. Perth and Brisbane play each other. At the end of Round 18 it's quite possible that the bottom six will all be on between 19-22 pts. That's even closer than in 09/10!

The bottom line is that we are still right in this. In fact, the last thing we should do is throw in the towel on this season. If last week provides the catalyst for a mini-revival then the play-offs are still a real possibility.

That's exactly the same conclusion that I came to, the season is nowhere near being over for us yet. All we need to do is scrape into the top 6 (which is very possible still), and then string three wins in a row together and we will be champions. Easy.
