We can still win this

Roar beat Adelaide

Jets beat Adelaide
Roar beat CCM
We beat Bling
Perth beat Tards

Tards and CCM draw
Bling beat Roar
We beat Adelaide
Jets Perth doesn't matter

We beat Tards
Perth beat Roar
Bling Jets doesn't matter
Roar fail to beat CCM

According to my calculations (I made up some results for the not mattering ones) the table looks like this:
Phoenix   34
Tards       33
CCM        32
Roar        32
Adelaide 30
Perth        28
Bling        26
Jets           18

I reckon the Sydney game is the big one. We win that and it's all on. I think we can take Adelaide and I don't think getting a result from Melbourne is impossible. We lose the Sydney game and it's more or less curtains.

I never said it was likely. Just possible...

Shows the closeness of the league. 3 rounds to go, and any of 5 teams can still win it.

And that I think is a positive, for if it were a runaway league, most of the casual fans may have switched off. The NRL is benefitting from having a close league where anyone can finish anywhere. Its good for sport and especially the A League where it keeps people tuned in, in such a competitive sporting market that is Australia.

The last 3 matches worry me. Focus is the key word in Sydney because if they are thinking about the following week, then as much as Sydney are playing sh*te, they have the ability to stick 3 up us and thanks for coming (much like all teams do, Perth). Even if we get Sydney in the bag, to play the top 2 teams in crunch time, they will be wanting to put points on us so they can get the top spot, hence why I liked Melbournes' victory over Adelaide as Adelaide will want to put that game in hand against the Roar to good effect to go top again. The romantic and the fan in me wants to think we can take both of those teams but I'd betting with my heart and not my head to see us pick up even 4 points out of those 2 game. I'm happy with our finish regardless.

FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS. No points here, we all take earlier summers to the beach...

(oh and if Browny or Karl Dodd wants to fill in Terry McFlynn, I'd like that. I hate that f**ker)

Sorry if this has been said before but winning at Sydney is crucial not just for play off hopes but I think more importantly to cement 5th place for the season. If Sydney win , it would be a close race for the 5th spot between us and Sydney. We must win to make 5th spot ours for sure.  Perth could also get 28 points and it would be all on goal difference - we have the advantage at the moment.
I'd be happy with 5th spot this year.

Resultwise, this season has ben a resounding success. Sure we got hit a few times, sure, we gave away points too. But we have more points than ever - fact! I also like how this season, even when down, they have not dropped their heads and given up. This current squd is a squad of determination. I am very proud they have been like this. 5th or 6th although not what we want, is certainly better than 8th!! I still wish/want/hope the guys do the job in Sydney and we make the playoffs. Be nice to get revenge over Adelaide whilst we're at it.

It is to me. 5-8th - all the same result. If we're happy with 5th but not happy with 6th that makes no sense.

The reason why 5th to 8th are not the same is that they are showing improvement on previous years. If we finish 5th we're showing a vast improvement on last season/ Of course, making the play-offs this year is even better, but to suggest that 5th this year equals the 8th of last year is ridiculous.

I'm not going to celebrate coming 5th when at the start of the season the aim was top 4. Sure, it's an achievement not getting the wooden spoon again I suppose - if we are aiming that low..

So your reasoning is that the publicised aim was 4th?

The aim should always be top 4, no? Don't understand how you can be happy coming outside of that in an 8 team league. Sure, it's an improvement and that is great but really.

Yes they are LOWER, because of the horrible start we had. I'm proud of how the team fought back and proved people wrong. Suggesting 5th is bad even after the start to the campaign is like crucifying a politician for changing their mind on an issue because newer statistics showed they were wrong the first time.

I would love for the phoenix to make the top four. But if the miss I would still be proud of them because of the way that they fought back this season.

While the aim should always be top 4, that is not always a realistic target. Take the English Prem  finishing in 13th as opposed to 10th (i.e. equivalent of 5th & 4th) would not be a failure for many teams.

You said it yourself - "it's an improvement and that is great". I would love us to finish in the top 4, but I don't think 5th will make our season a failure.

I guess we'll have to differ. You want to see the half empty side of things, but I prefer to see the positives from our second season and actually being in a playoff race for the first time, regardless of whether we just miss out or just make it, is a positive.

No, our aim is still top 4 - no difference from the start of the season. Valeo and I are, however, disagreeing on whether finishing 5th would constitute a failure.

Lets hope thats what happens
