LIA OUT FOR SEASON
Wellington
VINCE LIAS wretched run of injury has continued, with the defender/midfielders Hyundai A-League 2008/09 season over before it even began.
Lia wrenched his left leg in a tackle while playing at right back for the Phoenix in their 2008 Pre-Season Cup win against the Central Coast Mariners in Wellington on Sunday. Initial hopes that the injury might not be serious were dashed by a scan on Tuesday that revealed Lia had torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee an injury that would rule him out of football for up to nine months. He will undergo surgery in the coming weeks.
Phoenix head coach Ricki Herbert said the 23-year-old was gutted by the season-ending injury blow.
Vinnie had worked extremely hard during the pre-season and was probably in the best condition hes ever been. To miss the whole season is devastating for the young guy.
It wasnt a nasty tackle or challenge; it [the injury] was just one of those freak accidents.
Herbert had transplanted Lia from his usual midfield role into right back a troublesome position but one that the Phoenix boss believed Lia had the ability to excel in.
Hes a great athlete with terrific ability and potential. I had very high hopes for Vinnie playing at right back for us this season and he was certainly very excited about the challenge.
Lia, who recently extended his contract with the Phoenix for another two years, has had horrible luck with injury. He missed a large part of the Phoenixs inaugural season in Hyundai A-League with a serious thigh problem but showed his immense potential once fit.
The club is right behind Vinnie and hell be receiving the best care, Herbert said. Well be working very hard to get him back to full fitness as soon as possible because hes an integral part of the squad and of the clubs plans for the future.
The loss of Lia has been alleviated somewhat by the Phoenixs recent signing of experienced international defender David Mulligan. However, Lias season-ending injury means the Wellington club is able to now pursue the recruitment of a long-term injury replacement player.
Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said that process was already under way.
Weve got a couple of players coming next week to trial, so well assess how they go and how they fit into the squad. Fortunately, weve still got some time to assess our options.
The Phoenixs next match is against the Queensland Roar in a 2008 Pre-Season Cup tie at Stockland Park on the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

Do injury replacement players come under the salary cap? From memory I don't think they do but not 100% on this one.
It'll be interesting to see who comes in to replace him. Is there any need in it being a defender now that we have got Mulligan (with Christie as cover should he get injured/suspended). We could try out Jeremy Brockie or another up and coming Kiwi from the NZFC.

Any ideas?
Nuno Gomes

It's intriguing as from what I keep hearing decent right backs are as rare in Aus as they are here.
Hell no.
Impossible, I know, but he is a class player.

I was not at the game but people told me it didnt look that bad
Well, if they can't find any over there, I'm available...

If Herbert has brains he'll go for "Better than Andy, not as good as Joe" if SFC don't pick him up.
Apart from that - nothing around.
Though maybe Ricky will want a midfielder?

Waitakere reject... good player, but he's more left sided than right though.

I thought his efforts in the run in to the end of last season were one of the pleasant surprises of the year, particularly his piece of skill that set up Smeltz' seventh goal of the season vs Perth and of course his rocket of an equalizer against Melbourne.
The whole thing sucks for the player because now he has to through a course of different training exercises to keep the rest of the body fit and then a course of rebuilding the left leg muscle after the paster comes off. Nine months is usually ideal to build the leg to match his other leg for the elite player, a couple of month before beforehand he will slowly be playing some training games (not all) at practice but everyone has to be 100% certain that he is ready and not before as the knee will never quite be the same and that his leg muscles are fully developed to compensate for the weakness in the joint.
Yeah it stinks, because many players which are usually ultra fit with well developed muscle blows out their joints because they have been doing more than they have ever done muscle development wise and try that little special in which the body kinetic movement was not design for and then an awkward twist is the result. So Michael Owen and I knows how he feels because we been through those stages. Watching from the sideline and not playing stinks big time.AllWhitebelievr2008-07-23 17:14:53
I'm sure Lia feels absolutely awful now, but there's nothing to be done now other thn start the long process to recovery. Wish him all the best and hope that the injury doesn't have any adverse impact on his future career.

Not really. Technically right-footed, plus plays right-back for Olympic (played LB last year).
Better than anyone else going around.
