It's part of the Kiwi psyche (those sports where we're the only game on town being a noticeable exception).

Most plausible theory I've read so far.

This is what I hate most about the A-League, all this hopscotching that goes on. I hope Ange moves to the Tards and I hope the Tards talk up their chances about being genuine ACL and title contenders.... then I hope they do what all the top teams in the A-League eventually do and fuck out big time.

On his way to the big time.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

When Rodi told the Phoenix that Marco wasn't going to stay at the club, why wouldn't they announce he was leaving?

Who told you this? And they didn't say he was leaving, they said he had signed. Big difference.

Really?  Perhaps Victory just offered a better deal. And I don't mean in terms of money. Eg, buy out clauses, guaranteed minutes, guaranteed starts etc.

Ange will definitely go to Melb in my opinion - they will announce it after the GF. All his family are there. It's probably why Marco held off signing till he knew for sure. Melbourne would not of sacked Ernie without a ready made replacement.

If that was the case why wouldn't they have waited another couple of days to sack Merrick? Ange would not have wanted this coming out now.

Word on the street is it's Muscat, not Postagcoglou.

Still think he's an ungrateful little sh*t turning his back on a club that's given him a start in football and the fans who facilitated it.  End of.  I won't be showing HIM any loyalty when he returns.  We deserved another season out of him.

I find this unlikely. I don't have any inside news or rumours but I think that if they wanted a change Muscat is not the one to provide it because he was so heavily involved in the current structure. Plus Muscat has no genuine coaching experience and they have deep pockets so will be able to look around the world for a relatively high profile coach. IMO Muscat will be given the youth team or an assistant role first with the possibility of something else further down the track.

I think they'll make a play for Postagcoglou but I think it's unlikely they'll get him (for next season) and they certainly don't have him signed up yet. Hearing people say Marco knew he would be taking over sounds prety half baked. I just can't see them risking a delicate matter to remain confidential on a loose lipped agent.

Fo what its worth now my feeling is that Marco decided he wanted out of the club a long time ago. He was just waiting for his contract to expire.

Evidence for this.....my physio said that according to the gossip amongst physios around town(and sports physios are a  tight bunch) that Marco was a very unhappy boy at the Nix. Especially in year one. He arrives as a shy 17 year old and did not adjust to the Pro enviroment. Training in mid winter and no game time were tough for him.

In addition he was percieved as not putting in a full effort by many of the other players. He recieved quite a few bollockings by senior players(fair enough IMO). This has been confirmed in a Tim Brown interview late last year when he said the senior guys had to get on Marcos case at training.

Then he got injured. We know that at this point he requested to leave the club(sauce TonyP), which was turned down. All this points to a kid that was not overly happy at the club. IMO he decided sometime then, that come the end of his contract he was leaving. His good displays at the end of this  season just gave him more options.....IMO I don't think he ever had seriously considered staying.

My sports physio has been a reliable sauce up until now.....it sounds plausible

Anyway its all water under the bridge now.....time to move on. Marco who?

The fans facilitated a week of training didnt they??  (might be wrong but think it was something like that). And his skill did the rest -  not our skill in picking him from a number of candidates - his skill on the ball.  Hardly justifies that he has to stay here for another year to pay back what  some perceive is a huge debt to the fans and the club

His continued efforts when he was used (finally after1.5 seasons, regardless of injury) have got him noticed and now he wants to move on to what he considers will be better for him.

We dont know what was promised and he doesnt have to tell us, whatever it is, it holds more promise to him than what he knew he would receive staying here. Good luck to him and his career, I hope that he gets good opportunities, and takes his chances well in the hotbed of Melbourne football. All the talk of whether he knew or knows the coach is irrelevant, he wants to change environments, the grass is greener in Melbourne (except in the middle of summer)

He has signalled he will play for NZ, so I hope he keeps his form and does well for us in China and then on to 2014

Good luck, and bring back a good set of earplugs when you return to the Ring Of Fire, you'll need them

They're coachless by choice so they obviously have someone already lined up/confirmed and I wouldn't be surprised if that person is Ange and Marco knows about it.

From FourFourTwo: Rumours linking Brisbane Roar coach Ange Postecoglou with a switch to Melbourne Victory have been quashed with Football Federation Australia set to block any deal.

random thought

whoever takes over at victory obviously had nothing to do with marco's signing or contract negotiations, meaning that rodi's 'attacking central mid' nonsense has no basis whatsoever right?

I think there may be certain rules about negotiating with other coaches while they're still under contract?

If victory are believed to have done this, they could be blocked from having him as their coach. They couldn't stop him resigning from Brisbane, but they could stop him from being registered as a coach at victory.

That's based on my very limited understanding.

Allegedly

Honestly, I don't even care anymore - I'd prefer he played for us, but hey, if he wants to join another club - it's his decision.
And if/when it all goes horribly wrong, we can say we told him so.

Old news for me. Ever since it was first mooted that he had or was signing for another club..it was aways on the cards...just surprised it was the tards. Maybe he knew merrick was being booted and that there was already a new coach in the pipeline

Look on the bright side fellas and fellesses,
When he has his ( seemingly mandatory) sh*t second year , he won't be having it for us , but rather for Melbin Yoof. And do you think the Tard fans will be all that  understanding ?

He won't be on the youth team. They've paid a lot of money for him (presumably). But he won't get past Manny.

Ernie out Ange in scenario has been heavily rumoured and discussed in Oz football circles for the last couple of months (if not longer) and you seriously think Marco was not aware of this?

Don't be naive.

WTF is being naive about this? I said the victory management would not have told Marco, or even hinted, that Ange was coming. If Marco signed with victory under the presumption that Ange is coming, that was naive.

Fair enough in general - though I wouldn't be surprised if there were hints about Ange.

It'll of course become more interesting when the 2011/12 season starts and we can start "Judas Watch", willing Smeltzie and Marco to fail. And just wait until the Tards come to the RoF. I'm expecting some loltacular banners and chants.

I want to see any kiwi do well from a NZ perspective. Apart from when theyre up against the nix!

But look positively, we've got Moss, Smeltz, Kosta, WeeMac, Brockie, and now Marco all playing for other teams. Makes watching the other sides even more interesting for me.

It's what made the NRL sellable was the number of kiwi's at clubs in Aus (although that was before the Warriors).  Hopefully ti can do the same for the A-League.

Incidentally, this thread will remain for the rest of this week then marco stuff can go to to the Kiwi's overseas forum thread.
