Just to the end of the season mercifully.
This is from the press release posted on YF not long after he signed its on about page 31 in the latest news section.

"The 26-year-old joins the Phoenix on a one-year deal, with the option of another year,"

Elrich hasn't lived up to expectations. His crossing is sometimes telegraphed. Despite being quite a big, stocky one, he's very fast and could run at the defense a bit more.

John Aloisi would be a big signing, and it would be amazing if he came over.

We're pretty much looking for another legit goal-scorer to pair up with Smeltz. The 4-5-1 I don't really like as we are not getting enough guys forward.

While we are on signing players, retaining Felipe would be nice. And we get two more imports.

LOL joey would probably punch Joel in the face first time they came here and get banned from the game :P

if we get another marquee, should either be John Aloisi, or if we could have a go for Abel Xavier that would be sweet, he would really help us out big time..although its highly unlikely, cause i seem to rememeber him saying he went to LA cause he wanted to play with Beckham.. that could be wrong tho.. the other Elrich would be sweet, hes mint as, i can imagine he would be what our elrich used to be like... skinny and fast

Would those 3 necessarily get game time? Daniel and Bertos are same position players and set others up. Big Ben Sigmund will be in that lot but I digress from the subject.

Personally, I'd want a central defender as our marquee player because we have plenty of attacking options (yes we aren't converting them before you all start) and just someone to lead from the back.

The marquee player has got to

1: Want to come to Wellington.
2: Not be an ageing professional
3: Based on point 2, having to possibly settle for less than market value worth from overseas clubs
4: Based on point 3, have off field tangiables to make this person want to come here for less money than overseas, i.e. more than just the football on the park...

Tell them that Frankie Mac will be their love slave???? I'm sure that would buy us Phil or Gary Neville...

yeah, i sometimes wonder how much the two imports want to play for us - meaning Daniel and Felipe.

Daniel gives it his all most of the time same with Felipe, but where is their heart really at?

I dont rate Abel Xavier and he is getting on and he is probably more famous for his hair/drug use/disciplinary record than his football. He was also in LA before Beckham joined, though might have been because he was not contracted to a club and Beckham was.

I would like to see an attacking marquee player, someone who wins games and attracts people to the game. A defensive marquee player would have to really be an amazing player to make as much a difference, as it is easier to sort our defence through organisation and tactics than it is to score goals with organisation and tactis. What I am trying to say is that a good attacking marquee player is going to be more effective than a good defensive marquee player.

Kaka? Ronaldinho? Messi? Mcfadden?

Take your pick.

Having just been awarded veteran status on this site I am now entitled to dream without being slapped.

I think some of us are missing the mark on what we are capable of getting as a marquee player.

(Hypothetical Discussion unless Terry, Ricki and Tony are partaking).

I understand that we had to sell 30,000 tickets @ $80 ($2,400,000)  to break even on the Beckham game.

Admittedly there would also have been input from the likes of WCC, TVNZ and shared costs with Sydney etc.

1300 season tickets at $180 = $2,400,000.

If we could find a player who was capable of being marketed professionally on and off the field and who would draw in an additional 13 - 1500 people each game, over and above what we can expect now, we could definitely find higher territory somewhere between Beckham and what we have discussed on this thread.

Sure there would be extra costs for accommodation and transport etc for a season but there would be a longer period to capitalise.

OK, so Beckham was a special one (another Special One) but some of you may remember Keegan and Brooking paying visits to NZ in the 80's. These guys were gentlemen and did their job on and off the field in a way you would expect high profile professionals to act.

Were you serious about Larsson, Maggot

BUGGER!! IGNORE ALL THIS. I HAVE JUST REALISED I AM A 0 SHORT IN MY CALCULATIONS.
13,000 SEASON TICKETS. OH WELL, AS THE SONG GOES, THEN LIKE MY DREAMS THEY FADE AND DIE!!!

What about Jay-Jay Okocha? He's a fantastic player.

And let's be honest, I don't think he would say no considering he plays for Hull.

How about we get Terry to do one for the nation and ask him to sign Dan Carter? He would be a fantastic understudy for Daniel, could play as a winger or striker, pace, vision...knows how to tackle...has fantastic timing on the pass....would be a great foil for Shane Smeltz?

yep, he might forgo the sunny climes of Hull

especially as we've had him on the bench for the last two games and one of those he didn't even get a run

Sorry to diss this thread, but imo its more important to get the squad strong, a marquee player is an optional extra.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Ugo Ehiogu would be the best man as far as defense goes.

If we want someone to replace Elrich on the right then Gaizka Mendieta or Ray Parlour? Costacurta? 41 now but he only just retired and still would be better than Old i'd say.

ray parlour - cool but only because he's yet another Hull city connection

played on loan for us last season (last 12 or so games i think - he did ok, but i think he was taking up a coaching role at the Arse)

seriously though  Parlour's too old - it's got to be Nat Lofthouse i say

DEEEEANNNOOOOO!!!!!!  DEEEEANNNOOOOO!!!!!!

nice one,

it was great a few years back on the City website, every week someone would put up a post saying "Deano to sign on Friday" but it was always just for a laugh!, then about 18 months later it happened!

He saved our bacon last season, but i do wonder if his ego is causing him to freeze Jay Jay out (but that might just be Hull's weather)

I actually thought of him last night, and had a look at wikipedia to see where he is was playing. I think he would be the sort of player we should be looking at as our marquee.

agreed OOE, but this is just the traditional let's talk bollocks and pull player's names out of the air (99% of whom would never play in the A-League)

it seems that most weeks someone starts a thread like this (and this one is the best of a bad bunch, but only because 3 players with Hull city connections mentioned so far - and none of them initiated by me )

I don't think we need to sign a marquee defender, most of the squad are on one year contracts aren' they? It's a case of just finding a good defender or two and letting a couple we already have go. Then we could sign Bertos as a utility player and John Aloisi as our marquee player, I'm not that keen on Elrich staying unless we can fit him under the cap....

Larsoon would be perfect. 36 however not over the hill. Probably in the right price range. The only problem is he probably doesn't need to play football any more so may prefert to live in Sweden.
Fark he was good for Celtic!

yea he got offered an extension after his wee stint at man united and said no cause he wanted to live in sweden playing for his original club helsingborg, so a stint in NZ probably isnt on the cards. rodfarva2007-12-05 11:32:25

Apparently, he's planning to retire after his contract with Helsingborg finishes.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.
