Yeah Kaltak would be a good call, though realistically it always takes time for anyone to adjust from Handy Prem level to the A League, and the season is already 6 games in. What's Kaltak prior connection to the Nix? Trialled there before?

Talay may just prefer to scout from the NPL, if he does have to bring in extras. I'm sure there will be some locals, pushing Wolves NPL players for a looksee. They did after all beat the Nix in a friendly few weeks back, and their coach Luke Wiltshire was in the crowd today.

Former Sydney FC midfielder Sam McIllhatton has been training with the Phoenix throughout pre-season and could be offered an emergency contract, but Talay did not rule out sending an SOS to the Wellington-based reserve team ahead of next week’s clash against Western Sydney Wanderers to bolster his squad.

Ball will also miss the next game after being slapped with an automatic one-game suspension, opening the door for promising New Zealand under-20 international Ben Waine to get a rare start in the A-League.

“It’s pretty easy to get those guys over because there’s no quarantine in New South Wales if you’re coming from New Zealand so if we need to bring players we’ll bring players over,” he said.

“But first we’ll make an assessment of where everyone is at and we’ll go from there.

“We’ve still got Mirza who can play as a No. 9, Ben Waine who can play as a No. 9 and Ulises played as a No. 9 today, so we’ve got a few options there that we if need to use them, we can use them.”

transfer window is too far away. Will they allow emergency loans from an mol team?

Injury replacements yeah?

All teams have been were you are now... key players out.... a bit of panic in the squad... god knows our last 5 to 6 years...

You will come out of it.... ask me and I think being away from home is a big factor...

Australia just re-introduced the quarantine so that's not going to work.

McGing looked alright when he came on. I thought McGarry was our best.

None of the attackers in the reserve team are near good enough for the A-League anyway so I'd scrap that idea.

If there was one small happy moment yesterday, it was watching scenes of all those joyful CCM supporters post match, who had made the 3 hour journey down the road to the Gong. Yipe your club has done it tough for a long long time. That 8-2 home drubbing from the Nix a few years back probably being your nadir.

Like many happy for CCM and it's fans.

Shapes as a tough few weeks now for Talay & his coaching staff. Real test for them, especially with so many injured players. Welnix owners are in no position to throw cash at new visa signings when the transfer window rolls around. AV's recent article basically said a forecast $3.3M loss this season (previously about $1M) minus any NZ Govt help.

If Talay brings in anyone it will be from NPL. Especially now NZ-Aus the one way travel bubble is suspended.

Going to be a real test of mental fortitude. Lots of injuries, losing streak, hard done by on a few crucial ref calls, and away from NZ without home fans to lift you. Could well just end being a club survival season - which is obviously the most crucial thing in these hard financial Covid times.

See that Breakers (also based in Australia) are bottom of the NBL, so Nix are hardly alone with these problems. Watch Warriors implode once they lose a few games, and it sinks in with the playing group their captain and tailsman is off to another code at year end.

Hopefully Talay & co can turn it around, but is going to be very tough.

Royz wrote:

Police said no standing while chanting....

Police then said they had advise from the head of the A-League to that effect that no standing was allowed due to cov 9..

Mariners CEO was with teh group and texted the head of the A-League and his reply was we never issued any thing like that to either stadium officials nor local police nor any police departments .

Next time they stood over comes the men in blue and the CEO says here said  text from the head of the A-League you said ... issued instructions for no standing while signing / chanting ...

Got a bit ugly ... but having the CEO with the fans in suit and tie, and his title stopped what was over zealous policing with BS story lines pre prepared ...

Me thinks if a member of the RBB lifts his arse and farts next week they will clear the stadium...  perceptions of Football fans at the Gong seem rooted in European riots of the 80's...

Do people really think some NPL talent will magically solve any of our problems in the next 2-3 weeks? Any of our player on the bench should be better, why else are they on the bench?

Nah I don't think a couple of NPL players are going to solve Uffie's problems, more someone else's words. But that's now likely where any new players are going to come from.

FYI - here's Soccerway's profile on Sam McIllhatton, ex SFC U21 midfielder, who Voerman noted has been training with the Nix since pre season.

HHHHMMMMMM consider ..... A cursory wiki search of your average J-League club shows they have squads of 30 to 35 players. So there’s a lot of players in Japan who seemingly aren’t playing. And then there’s the J-League 2. I think the K-League is similar.

Its obviously not as simple as going and plucking a player at random out of the J-League but the early success of Danzaki (who has had only very limited first team opportunities with Consadole Sapporo) shows that there is an opportunity for A-League clubs to get more value out of the ‘+1’ Asian player import rule either as a permanent or loan signing.

Consider a loan deal with a non playing player in the J-League or K-League. Your owners are astute and have funds, but the Roar are not flush with funds and its working nicely for them.

As someone else wrote, you spend time negotiating, you have to wait to find an empty slot in the hotel MIQ system, they fly in and do 2 weeks in a Sydney hotel, they start training with complete strangers, get to know team patterns, fitness required, language barriers to possibly overcome (if you are talking someone from Japan) - season could be 2/3 over or more before they are ready to make an impact.

And the Welnix owners maybe wealthy, but it's just been reported last week that they are likely to make a loss of over $3M this season, about 3 times as much as normal, because of having to based out of NZ. Why should they throw money at another overseas visa player, when even if they do have a great positive impact, it's now likely to be too late in the season to achieve much.

Though a very cheap loan deal, could be attractive, as not a lot to lose.

I agree Coochie. any improvement we make this season will have to take place on the training pitch.

Well if that's the case you may as well write the season off. The club has already said no to more money for Talay so we have to use the kids. Anyway next season should be a ripper.

standard ban for that kind of tackle, 1 for the red and 2 for serious foul play. Its a shame but it will give Waine a chance.

It may be that Ball will return with a renewed focus and hunger.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Pretty painful game aside, surely it is obvious how much more effective Davila is when he's played through the middle and can actually pick the ball up in pockets of space. Out wide he doesn't see enough of the ball and is forced to do more of a job defensively which is a massive weak point in his game

Annoying in it that while deserved, one can't help but think that if it had been a CCM player (or other Aussie team playing us) he would have received at most a yellow.

We had Nathan Burns Mk.2 before, let's be a bit more clear eyed about where Roy will be next year regarding his fitness. A huge part of his game was his explosive speed.

I'd take a slower Krishna over all of our forwards right now (Davilla being a midfielder).

I'm aware of a certain defender in Japan who would not need a visa and whose native language is English, he must be starting to feel home sick for the long white cloud. I have a feeling he's not getting much game time either ;-)
